Marcus Davis blogs his way to Dan Hardy at UFC 99:
"But I wasn’t going to shake his hand [at the weigh-in]. No interest. No interest in ever shaking this guy’s hand. And did you notice he got booed at the weigh-in? People don’t like the trash talk.
"I am not impressed at all by him. He doesn’t look very athletic, he doesn’t look strong, he doesn’t look much of anything physically other than he looks worried.
"Now he is thinking 'Maybe my plan is about to backfire... maybe I shouldn’t have pissed him off so bad... maybe instead of acting like a 12 year old on the computer, I should have been preparing...''

If you’re ready to talk trash about your opponent, then be ready for an explosive weigh in.

Marcus takes himself too seriously. I thought Hardy did a great job of hyping this fight up. I’m a lot more interested in this fight now than I would have been without the trash talk. A little photoshoppin’ and name calling isn’t as insulting as Marcus makes it sound.
And I’m fed up of Marcus and the whole Irish thing he has going…. you don’t see Serra carrying an Italian flag now do you? Plastic Paddy is right.
I hope Hardy knocks him out.

It still amazes me that people don’t like the fact he’s proud of part of his heritage. It’s nice to know that his carrying an Irish flag around bothers you so much.

i have no problem with people being proud of their heritage but its like….enough already! I’m pretty sure there are a lot of fighters proud of where they come. And no I don’t like people who are overly obsessed with their lineage. You’re who you are…. flags divide people.

Daivs is more Welsh and Scottish than he is Irish, just a coincidence though that he plays up to the far more fashionable one though.
And “hand grenade”, yuck, more juvenile transatlantic romanticism.

Pretty sure someone else hung that handle on him.

It doesn’t matter. His family is from Waterford, that’s all he cares about.

I don’t think the trash talk is what bothered Marcus, at least not initially.
What really got him pissed off was the homoerotic photoshop thread that Hardy started over on the Cage Warriors site. Some of the ‘shops did go beyond the realm of good taste (shopping Marcus’ head onto gay porn scenes), and Hardy egged them on throughout the thread.
After that, pretty much everything Hardy said, no matter how innocuous, pissed Davis off.

I’m so sick of pseudo-trash-talk. Just show up, have some class, do your job, and be a fucking man about it, not some petulant brat.

I don’t understand these comments. Everyone is complaining about how Davis is mad. Hey… the guy got called out by Hardy on his heritage as a fake Irishman and a plastic Paddy. Hardy worked a perfect psychological campaign. Davis took the bait, but the problem is that Davis doesn’t like it and he’s a powerhouse guy.
Enjoy the hype and the bad blood. Everyone sits around complaining about professionalism, but in the end, this matchup produced more hype and potentially some more PPV buys. Calling Davis a piece of shit for getting mad is bullshit.

In response
I am not complaining about the hype engine… I’m just allowing myself to get swept up in the moment! You’re taking the smack talk way too seriously… it’s all in good fun! WAR HARDY!!
I'm the kind of girl who loves to watch a GOOD fight!

Hardy pointed out in the Vblog that he started talking shit because otherwise there is no upside for Davis to take a fight with him. This way he sets himself up to jump up the rankings if he wins.
I actually had a conversation with an Irish guy in Ireland about this sort of thing.
For whatever reason people of Irish descent tend to identify very strongly with their heritage, myself included. This makes sense because they have a pretty sweet culture after all.
Anyway the population of Ireland is somewhere around 4 million but there are 30 million people out there that would be eligible to apply for Irish citizenship because they have an Irish parent.
As the guy I was talking with about this put it.
What if everyone came home for the weekend.
People of Irish descent are not really Irish and they are not viewed as such by the Irish.
I dislike Matt Hughes.
