Cyborg v. Carano to be 5 5 minute rounds
Sherdog's Jake Rossen says that the title fight between Gina Carano and Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos will have 5 minute rounds.
Ever better: Strikeforce has confirmed to ESPN that rounds will be a full five minutes in duration. About time. There appears to be evidence that females have a 10-15 percent lower oxygen consumption rate than men do, which conceivably could limit the kind of interval and muscular endurance performance that MMA demands, but is it really by so much that they needed competition duration reduced by nearly half?
There seemed to be questions about this earlier, but I'm glad to finally see the women get to fight 5 minute rounds. 3 minutes really isn't enough time to get going, and I really don't see any reason why they wouldn't be able to go the full 5 minutes. Hopefully the rest of Strikeforce's women's fights have 5 minute rounds where allowed.

Awesome!
3 minutes really isn’t enough time to get going,
Absolutely. In one of carano’s fights (I forgot which whom), it took the opponent about 2:30 to get her on the ground, and than the round was over. If it was 5 minute rounds, it may have been very different.

Yeah if 3×5 rounds become standard for WMMA it will really help the ground fighters. Women are capable of some amazing wrestling and BJJ so this should make the fights more exciting

Yippie, but I have a feeling that this one ain’t going 5 rounds

Does this mean the weigh-ins
will be after the fight? That’s the only way they both make 145. Glad to see we get 5 minutes too. Good news!

Another excuse to get Gina in the nuddy.
If you see Mark Coleman in person, drop $5 on the floor and watch the fun as he tries in vain to bend down and pick it up.

I’ve heard this before. I hope it actually happens this time.

Very exciting news.

BOO
Bring back the 3 minute rounds. You’ll all be singing a different tune when both of these gals are completely gassed in the 1st round. It will look like a female version of a TUF fight.

I doubt that will happen. Women run marathons too. They will surely use their energy more conservatively than when they fought 3×3 rounds. If they do gas early its only because they are almost the female equivalent of HWs.
Besides, Santos was full of energy for 9 full minutes last time

what got a better rating last year during the olympics?? The marathon or the 100 yrd dash??
Besides, Santos was full of energy for 9 full minutes last time
when you were 19 and you were beating up on your 12 year old lil bro did you ever get tired?? That is the closest thing I can compare that fight to.

I dont think track is a good comparison for this.
However, the beating up on your little bro analogy made me laugh. Not totally accurate though because Akano is a badass. Maybe if your little brother is Damien Maia that works

Woman have more efficient cooling systems, so they’ll consume less energy, so they won’t burn out as quickly. Ideally, of course…

+1
That’s too big of a jump. What is Strikeforce thinking? They need a good performance, they putting this as the main event on a prime time card. The only way to destroy this match is to have both women gas and put on a sloppy performance.

It’s politically incorrect but this guy is probably right.

rec'd.
great news. some of the ladies were just getting the feel out process done by the time the 1rst rnd was over. it was like losing a round. can’t wait to see what sarah kaufmann can do with 5 minute rounds. i liked the way she fought her last fight and look forward to seeing more of her, regardless of size. she reminded me alot of lucia rijker with her stand-up and i liked lucia alot in boxing. not quite that high of a level technically, but very good for mma. i hope strikeforce really opens it up with the womens division, b/c they are very exciting to watch and deserve their chance.

disaster… rewatch some of those women’s eliteXC matches most of the girls (even cyborg) were dying after one 3 minute round. If they wanted to make the fight longer they should have made it 3×5 or 4×3, do something small and slowly build up as the fighters get used to it. Instead they (nearly) double the round time and quadruple total fight time
I really don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t be able to go the full 5 minutes
and I really don’t see any reason why WNBA players shouldnt be able to dunk and/or play with a regulation size basketball… how about BECAUSE THEY ARE FREEEKIN GIRLS!!! I dont mean to come off as sexist as that sounds but its the truth. As well trained and well conditioned as they are they just arent the physical machines that guys are (who still struggle with 3×5 minute fights).
I was rooting for this fight to turn out good but now I hope it goes long and turns into a total circus. After the second round they both will have been fighting for longer than they ever have had to plus have another 15 minutes ahead of them.
What should have been a great exciting event will now kill what ever legitimacy women’s MMA has built up when both are struggling to stand, leaning against each other as the 3rd round starts.

So you’d rather root for a sucky fight just so you can prove some irrelevant point on the internet, rather than hoping for an entertaining match – which would entertain you?
wow…

conflicted….
1) you (rightfully) showed how stupid my thread sounded to others
2) I still (kinda) stand by what I said. I would rather have this fight prove that 5×5 will never work and get it out of the way rather then being submitted to multiple events that are “ruined” before people reach the inevitable conclusion that 5×5 (or even 3×5min) just wont work.

You use poor examples though. Women use smaller basketballs because their hands are smaller. They can’t dunk because they’re physically smaller. That has nothing to do with endurance.
A woman’s olympic basketball game is the same amount of time as a men’s game. A woman’s marathon is just as long as a men’s marathon. The fact that they are smaller doesn’t mean they can’t have the same endurance.

or
you could hope that it turns out well, and in the future the 5×5 fem-fights will be wonderful.
