Tim Sylvia's Boxing Match Cancelled, Will Now Be an MMA Fight
Frontpaged by Kid Nate.
I saw that Bruz created a FanPost about Tim Sylvia and Ray Mercers boxing match being canceled. I immediately called Tim's trainer who is down in Alabama with Tim. He told me the fight had been canceled and if they tried to have a boxing match the police would arrest Ray, Tim and Monte Cox. They have since agreed to turn it into a MMA fight and it will go on as the main event at Adrenaline III. This obviously swings the fight in Tim's advantage since Kimbo Slice was able to finish Mercer off in their MMA bout with a choke. I'm glad they were able to work something out, as both fighters have trained for months and deserve a payday for it.

Is it bad that I wish this would happen in epic COPS fashion instead of the fight?
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
No, and the only way to make it better is if the cops had LASERs.

Dude, laser pistols? Are you crazy? I’m shocked that you have to ask that question.

HA
It had something to do with the fact that the New Jersey Athletic commision shot it down and then waited til the last minute to somehow get the authorities involved with the match.
Wait..
Why would the cops be involved? Because it’s an unsanctioned bout? I can’t remember if this was sanctioned or not.

Alabama Sanctioning
I think the whole point is that Alabama doesn’t have a sanctioning body. In that case, I can’t see the local law enforcement caring one way or the other whether or not this fight takes place, or the fashion in which it takes place (i.e. boxing, MMA, etc.)

They're in the process of setting one up
And they recently had a boxing match featuring Deontay Wilder there, so it’s not completely illegal….
They probably just didn’t go through the proper channels.

What i get from reading the post by Kizer is that there is a federal law that says a boxing match in the US must be sanctioned by someone.
If there is no sanctioning body in the state, they can find someone from a US (or tribe inside the US) commission to come and supervise, or they can be supervised by the ABC. The adrenaline card got someone from a tribal commission in Canada, which doesn’t meet the requirements of that law because the commission is from canada.
So the fight was illegal according to a federal law, but that law doesn’t apply to MMA, so it can happen if it’s an mma match (or if they got someone from a US commission to supervise the boxing match, but they haven’t been able to get that done.
Well then!
Tell Tim that I hope he can catch a break once in a while – this fight turning into an MMA fight is hopefully the start of some good things. Hearing the Miletich guys shit all over him last year really turned me around from a guy who thought he was overrated to a guy who thinks Tim just needs the right camp and the right fights to get back into the top echelon. I’ve been rewatching some of his old fights and Tim was pretty fearless back then.

He did his damndest to finish Nog when he could’ve just coasted to a decision. I hope Tim is still taking the sport seriously.

Nice to hear...
Someone well wishing him. The problem with Tim and his training is finding big enough guys that have talent for him to beat on. He trains all the time, but beating up the same guys for years just isn’t cutting it like it was before. Tim is very dedicated to Miletich because Pat is the one who found Tim, and made him who he is today. I think people will be suprised how aggresive Tim will be in his next few fights. He showed it against Nog, obviously he never got a chance to show much against Fedor . Trust me, he is eager to get some wins and he wants to get back to the top.

Poor Timmeh. After all these years, people still don’t know how to spell his last name. What I found interesting was that Big John agreed to ref this and seemingly got verbally bitch slapped by the ABC and that Monte had to go all the way to Canada to brib… er to find someone from a commission to supervise it. Thanks for the link, it’s a good read.
You wouldn’t actually be making fun of us southerners, would you? Or is your target only Porky here?
Actually, it was the only Alabama Sheriff pick I could google that wasn’t black and white or targeted a Southern stereotype. He’s a little porky, but aren’t all older sheriffs with a desk job?

Gentleman’s agreement anyone? Though I’m sure it would be hard for Sylvia to abide by the agreement he starts getting his ass kicked. Force of habit might take over with the small gloves in a cage.
Last time someone trying that, there was almost a riot. The worst part was, I missed watching the stream.
That was only because Thompson was supposedly never talked to about it.

They’ll do a gentleman’s agreement. I bet Mercer and Sylvia never hit the floor ever.

4 Oz gloves changes a lot though. I’d be willing to bet someone DOES hit the floor, but not in the way you’re suggesting. Hit the floor = nitey nite.

I’m not going to say that Mercer will win, but I will say that if he studied Tim even a little, he should be able to win. History has shown that a quick attack early in a match will drop Sylvia, and it seems to me that Mercer, old though he may be, has superior boxing to both Fedor and Randy Couture. In that way, I think Mercer has a legitimate chance to defeat Sylvia.

Mercer has a historical jab that can drop a lot of guys even while he’s in his upper 40’s. Sylvia might be in trouble.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. Mercer might be able to KO his ass in less time now.

I dunno though. Mercer has 3 days to come to grips with the fact that the fight is using 4 oz gloves instead of whatever boxing gloves they were planning to use.
It’ll be easier for him to KO TIm, but it will also be easier for him to break his hand on tim’s skull. Tim has more experience with the little gloves so that won’t be as much of an issue for him. So if Tim can survive the punch that breaks mercer’s hand, he should be ok.
The problem is that Sylvia can clinch him and the referee can’t intervene in an MMA bout, so he could use his size.

Hey Leland...
Name a guy that has knocked Tim out. I’ll wait…………….yeah keep thinking…….I’m pretty sure Fedor hits harder than this old sack of potatoes. Tim has been rocked before yes, never KO’d. I think you are a closet fan, all this negative talk about Tim. But I bet if you saw him in person you would be scrambling for your camera just like everyone else does when they see him. Hit me with your mailing address and I’ll get you an autographed pic.

agreed.
changing it to an mma fight makes it more atrociuos than a boxing match. mercer lost to kimbo in 1 rnd in his 1rst mma fight, i believe. tim stood a WAY better chance of winning a boxing match than ray does of winning an mma match. this thing reeks!

the even sadder thing is, i attended the strikeforce event live, and sylvia showed up at about half way through, while fedor and barnett where there from almost the beginning. tim was swarmed the whole night by people asking for autographs and pictures, while fedor and barnett were mostly ignored. fedor got a pretty good applause at 1 point when they announced him in attendance, but it was kinda surreal seeing the best hw in the world, fedor, and nobody paying attention to him at all, while sylvia,1 of the most hated fighters on the net , was treated like an mma god. maybe fans were intimidated by fedor, but i kinda doubt it. i think most just don’t know who he is.
They don’t know who he is.
That is why it doesn’t make sense for the UFC to meet Fedor’s needs. People in the US don’t know who he is.
Fedor, Timmy, and Barnett were all in the same place a few months after Fedor completely destroyed Tim, and fans at an mma show still can’t pick Fedor out of a lineup. They choose to get pictures with the former UFC champ.

Along the lines of Gannon-Kimbo or moreso Thompson-Bosse at Strikebox. There’ll be some “agreement” to what the “mma” fight is and then there will be a big dustup when someone doesn’t abide by what others thought the rules were.

Does this say anything about John McCarthy that he was going to participate in this farce? I mean why would the most respected ref in the business agree to be a part of an event that got turned down by one Athletic Commission. How will the Athletic Commissions look at McCarthy for being a part of subverting the sanctioning process by moving the event to an unsanctioned state?
he told sherdog that they told him it was going to be sanctioned.
The problem is that it was going to be sanctioned by a canadian commission, but it’s apparently illegal for a canadian commission to sanction a boxing match in the US.
who would have ever thought the Canadians couldn't sanction a bout in Alabama.
Weird.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
