BJ Penn: There Won't Be Bad Blood With Me and Kenny Florian

Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.

Bj-penn_mediumBJ Penn has been known as a guy who can market and build up massive interest for a fight. He knows how to hype up a fight and ham it up for the cameras when he needs to. The attention gained in high profile fights with Sean Sherk and Georges St. Pierre was largely in part of BJ talking the talk and building up on the "bad blood" between them.

His next fight will be against Kenny Florian at UFC 101, and I have the feeling that this time it will be different. There is no first fight with a controversial decision, there is no steroid use or "cheating" that he could build up on, and no one has said anything bad about each other. I think that this fight will be one without animosity, and I think that it will be a great fight between the two best fighters in the division who have mutual respect for each other.

That has been my opinion for some time now, but I still wanted to find out for sure.

BJ Penn is known to respond to his fans online, so I contacted him to see if I could gauge if there was any animosity between him and Kenny:

Anton Tabuena: How's training for Kenny going? What do you think about him training with GSP and Firas?

BJ Penn: Training is going great. I wish Kenny the best. I don't mind at all.

Anton Tabuena: I think it's nice that there's not much badblood between you guys. Two top guys in the division will sell itself right?

BJ Penn: Yup. It's going to be a great fight.

I tried to push some buttons on his past issues by bringing up St. Pierre and Firas, but he didn't bite. And even if he probably still has beef with GSP, it seems like he won't hate Kenny for it. BJ Penn will surely find a way to hype things up, but i definitely don't think it will be because of bad blood between him and kenny.

I just sent BJ a message today on twitter, wish more fighters had that option. BJ seems like he makes sure he talks to the people who try to talk to him. I met him at the GSP-Fitch fight, he was in his pajama pants in a burrito place…nice guy.

Yeah

People criticize him for a lot of stuff but I think he’s a pretty nice guy.. Really good to his fans too.

Frank Trigg

has replied to my tweets a couple times. While I’m not a huge Trigg fan, it did make me like him a bit more seeing that he could take 5s out of his day to talk to a random guy on the internet.

Him and Urijah

It didn't stop him from tweeting during surgery

So I don’t think it would stop him while in recovery..

Plus I think it’s great that he’s staying positive through this experience. :)

I think BJ’s attitude was changed by the Primetime shows for UFC 94. He complained a lot about the way he was portrayed so he’s probably more careful about what he says.

I met BJ after UFC 84 and he was one hell of a nice guy.

I love BJ.

He is part of my all asshole team I root for.

Which Jake and which Miller are you talking about? And why is Frank Shamrock not on that team?

No way. Kid’s too rusty, and Warren, as good as he is, is still too green for a finisher as strong as Torres.

Kid would destroy Torres

But Torres would probably sub Warren at this point.

by rainmaker6 on Jun 11, 2009 1:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Why is that? I think Kid has slowed down and still recovering from his long time off.

Cool Interview

You’re like the official Twitter-Reader of BE – I didn’t think Twitter would ever be as useful as you’re using it.

It will be a good fight

by Derek Suboticki on Jun 10, 2009 5:42 PM EDT reply actions

There’s no controversy now, but there will be for the rematch when Florian wins a stoppage after a series of illegal blows to the back of the head.

Good job weoweoweo.
Do people in the PI assume BJ is Pinoy?
Adopt him as a Pac Man of MMA?

=)

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jun 10, 2009 6:28 PM EDT reply actions

I know a lot of Filipinos who assume that he is half pinoy. They refuse to believe me when I tell them he’s half Korean.

by steak_knife on Jun 10, 2009 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah there are lots of rumors

Cause Hawaiians in general usually have pinoy blood. But BJ has already denied it, I guess some people still don’t know.

by Anton Tabuena on Jun 10, 2009 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions

BJ Penn is still of the of the most talented fighters in this sports history he gets a bad rap cause he talks a lot of shit and doesn’t train like he should but the guy is still top class. i like kenny but ill be routing for the prodigy in this one.

Has everyone already forgot about BJ saying Florian was his snitch about GSP? It was a pretty big story, c’mon now guys.

by N. Rodriguez on Jun 10, 2009 7:55 PM EDT reply actions

BJ looks way too ripped in that picture.

by rainmaker6 on Jun 11, 2009 1:03 AM EDT reply actions

Wait

Did I read wrong when BJ said he’s going to go to California to train for his title fight?

Is he really leaving Hawaii??
