Shocking News: Kimbo Slice to Compete on TUF 10

Kimbo-slice_medium

Now this came out of nowhere.  According to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, Kimbo Slice is going to be a contestant on TUF 10:

The UFC president has repeatedly insisted he would not allow Slice to compete in the UFC unless he won his way onto the show by competing on "The Ultimate Fighter."

Slice has called White’s bluff and will appear on Season 10 of the highly rated Spike TV series, White has confirmed. Fighters live in the same house and train together, and then fight during the show in a bid to earn a UFC contract.

This will likely be a ratings bonanza for the UFC on Spike.  Good move?  Bad move?  I lean towards good, I have no problem giving him a chance on the reality show, it's much less offensive than bringing him in to lose to Chuck.

If luke cummo, josh haynes and dave kaplan get a chance to fight in the UFC through TUF, than why not Kimbo?

didn't Luke Cummo make it to the finals?

and I think he took Joe Stevenson to a decision too.

Dave Kaplan does suck though, I’ll give you that.

Yeah, I guess you are right about Cummo making it to the finals. I routed for him but his skills weren’t very impressive. I think every fight he won was an upset. He just popped into my head right away when I was trying to think of really bad TUF contenders to appear on a PPV.

The UFC, Spike, and the reality show ratings can all get a win-win out of this. If he loses in the opening fight, so what? His persona alone will still bring hours of entertainment.

by woooburn on Jun 2, 2009 12:45 AM EDT up reply actions

mmajunkie

And unlike in recent seasons, where the competitors had to win a fight to earn their way into the house, there will be no such arrangement this time. All 16 fighters – Spike and the UFC are keeping names of the others a closely guarded secret – will automatically move into the house.

Yep there is a reason that this is only the second season to have heavyweights on it (and the vast majority of the heavys on the other season either dropped in weight class or out of the UFC entirely). New talent at heavyweight seems to be really thin.

Spike TV actually helps pay a portion of two TNA wrestlers’ salaries (Sting and I think Kurt Angle) in an attempt to raise ratings for them. Spike might have offered to pay Kimbo for this. Probably not, but I just thought I’d put that out there.

Exactly why I think he got paid to do this.. If I was him, and strikeforce offered me a small pay cut from my 500k, and all the ufc offered me is a normal tuf contract, why wouldn’t I take the money?

by Anton Tabuena on Jun 2, 2009 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly and that was the point that was being made all along here. SpikeTV has a lot of control over what does and doesn’t make it onto TUF and it’s not like they would be above paying someone a butt load of extra cash to do one of their “reality shows” to boost the ratings. That has nothing at all to do with Dana White.

Kimbo would get easy money from strikeforce.. Sure the ufc won’t give him money as big as that but they still have to do something to convince himto take their offer. Like cash plus the opportunity to get big sponsors and to fight in the ufc..

It’s not that hard to understand. Why is it so impossible for you that they’d give him a signing bonus?

Even if he spent it all on coke and hookers

I don’t think he’s struggling for money. I honestly believe Kimbo wants to be considered a real MMA fighter. Dana knows he doesn’t need to throw money at a guy that got embarrassed by Seth Petruzelli. Spike knows that TUF is their ratings cash cow, they don’t need Kimbo to get people to tune in, especially after the success of UFC Undisputed.

I just don’t think this is about money. Kimbo wants to fight in the UFC and if competing on TUF is what it takes, he appears to be humble enough to give it a go.

You’re acting like Dana’s smack talk against Kimbo is something special. It’s not, it’s one of many, and will probably have little to do with anything in the future now that Kimbo’s with the UFC.

It’s just, Kimbo has been KILLER hush…I mean, the only thing we heard from Scott Coker about Kimbo was that he pretty much could care less, and definately wouldn’t be making him a headliner…and that was that. I didn’t expect Kimbo to go for TUF…at all, and I really doubt Dana would throw money at him to be on the show…Dana can’t stand him. So my guess is, either Spike picked up the tab, or Kimbo stepped up.

by Kaleb Kelchner on Jun 2, 2009 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Actually......

Coker just said:

Whether its Fedor, Andrei Arlovski, Takanori Gomi, or another top fighter, we want to keep our doors open to any free agents of this caliber. Our goal is to build the best roster that Strikeforce can create, and I think we’re on our way to doing so.

As far as Kimbo goes, we would like to have him fight in Strikeforce at some point.

The list of heavyweights from the only other time they have had them on TUF:

Mike Whitehead, Dan Christison, Rob MacDonald, Tom Murphy, Keith Jardine, Seth Petruzelli, Rashad Evans, Brad Imes, Kerry Schall, Eli Joslin

Most of those guys dropped out of the heavyweight division as soon as the show was over. It’s quite possible that we will see the same with the up coming season.

I’m hoping that the quality of prospects at hw has gone up a lot since 2005 (although some very good light heavys came out of that season). by MonkeyCHops on Jun 2, 2009 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions

i have said the same thing

imagine MMA keeps growing and instead of basketball, someone of the same physical stature decides to take Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu. I think we are going to start seeing ridiculously gifted people making the sporting decision to take up MMA. scary to say the least. instead of growing up getting into fights after school and during their “doorman days”, now they are coming home from summer camps at Militich and/or AKK training centers.

good luck in life!

by georgehouse on Jun 2, 2009 2:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Imagine a guy with size and athleticism like Brock Lesnar but has started training MMA in his teens instead of his 30’s. There are lots of very athletic, very big men out there it’s just that pro football snags a lot of them up, as money starts to go up in fighter pay we could see some elite level athletes chosing MMA as their first choice instead of something to try later in life.

by who me on Jun 2, 2009 2:34 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

The other factor besides money is the fact that many elite athletes become stars when they are like 12 years old playing basketball or football. That won’t be possible for MMA.

Most college players don’t make it to professional ball sports but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t exceptional athletes, for that matter there are guys who make the NFL but don’t stick (Rex Richards) that MMA offers a opportunity to. Ultimate Fighter 9 ratings for Spike TV ‘best in years’

http://mmamania.com/2009/04/03/ultimate-fighter-9-ratings-for-spike-tv-best-in-years/

Overall the ratings for this season have been about the same as normal, anything over a 1 is a good rating on SpikeTV.

by who me on Jun 2, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think Dana is hurting for ratings

he recognizes the potential for Kimbo as a ratings draw and if the opportunity to sign him came up why wouldn’t he?

by rainmaker6 on Jun 2, 2009 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Pro Elite fraudulently paraded him around as a world beater and a legit headliner.

Dana is promoting him on a show about guys not yet ready for primetime getting a shot via a tournament of their peers.

You’re right, you caught Dana red handed…

Dear Affliction,

When the organization you’re competing with gets a guy from the corpse of one of it’s former competitors (a guy that headlined cards) to compete on it’s reality show and that action generates more media coverage than you putting the best fighter in the world against a chronically overranked opponent, it’s probably time to pack it in.

It would be funny if he had Roger Gracie, Jeff Monson and other good heavyweight submission artists all lined up to be contestants against Kimbo.

But Kimbo is definitely gonna be getting some bread and Dana will look either like a genius for turning Kimbo into a profitable draw again, or a genius for making Kimbo look like the B rated fighter that most people assume he is, and might be.

Either way it will be exciting television.

Good for Kimbo

The guy hasn’t done anything wrong when it comes to MMA. He is what it is (ugh). It’s been the promoters who have put him in horrible situations career-wise. Hopefully Kimbo acquits himself well enough. Doubt that will be easy with the likes of Rampage and his dimwitted antics around, though.

That said, I haven’t watched a single episode of TUF and this news doesn’t change my intentions at all.

by a tommy point on Jun 2, 2009 4:32 AM EDT reply actions

Kimbo made his rep as a street-tough guy who will fight anyone. When he couldn’t put away James Thompson, that was enough red flags to dent his hype for the hardcore. Then he appeared shaken to fight Petruzelli last minute (which is a common occurrence & got KO’d. Some of this is beyond his control, but if he never had the self-promoted street cred at all, he wouldn’t have had any to lose.

If he never had the “self-promoted street cred”, he’d still be living in his car pondering the philosophical merits of whether or not to beat the crap out of the next passerby and take their wallet.

Kimbo was always pretty upfront about his place in the sport. I just can’t fault the guy for much of anything when it comes to his MMA career. What’s wrong with taking the opportunities thrown your way?

If you want to knock the guy for being a lousy fighter, well, okay then. Though, I’m not sure how that’s germane to my previous comment.

by a tommy point on Jun 2, 2009 5:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I would wager if you go to the type of backyard fights he held, not every successful fighter would have that same attitude. His persona led to being promoted a certain way, which wrote the proverbial check he couldn’t cash. I do think away from the camera & the hype, he’s a decent guy with more self-awareness than most people give him credit for. I also think he could be a decent fighter with enough training – a Liddell-style sprawl & brawler perhaps. Now that the hype has dissipated after a 14s KO to a pink-haired LHW (something that would damage anyone’s reputation), I’m interested in knowing the substance behind it.
