Shocking News: Kimbo Slice to Compete on TUF 10
Now this came out of nowhere. According to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, Kimbo Slice is going to be a contestant on TUF 10:
The UFC president has repeatedly insisted he would not allow Slice to compete in the UFC unless he won his way onto the show by competing on "The Ultimate Fighter." Slice has called White’s bluff and will appear on Season 10 of the highly rated Spike TV series, White has confirmed. Fighters live in the same house and train together, and then fight during the show in a bid to earn a UFC contract.
This will likely be a ratings bonanza for the UFC on Spike. Good move? Bad move? I lean towards good, I have no problem giving him a chance on the reality show, it's much less offensive than bringing him in to lose to Chuck.

YAY!
How awesome is this? It’s a season of TUF with Rashad and Rampage coaching…and Kimbo as a contestant. If you try to tell me this isn’t amazing TV…you are full of shit.

If luke cummo, josh haynes and dave kaplan get a chance to fight in the UFC through TUF, than why not Kimbo?

and I think he took Joe Stevenson to a decision too.

havent read all the posts yet, but i think they’re only doing 16 fighters (all going straight into the house) this season
And unlike in recent seasons, where the competitors had to win a fight to earn their way into the house, there will be no such arrangement this time. All 16 fighters – Spike and the UFC are keeping names of the others a closely guarded secret – will automatically move into the house.

maybe but it would be hard to even find 16 HW that don’t suck really bad I would guess.

With Rampage and Rashad coaching, I definitely wanna see Kimbo at least get into the house.

Holy shit I didn't see this coming!
I think it is definitely a good thing.. Maybe I’d start watching tuf more this time around..
If he does well then the UFC gets another marketable fighter, if he doesn’t do as well, then at least he boosted the ratings a lot and the name of whoever beat him gets more recognition..
I hope he does pretty well though. He seems like a nice guy, elite just didn’t use him properly..
you've got to hand it to Kimbo
He’s willing to get in there and do what he needs.

The issue here is how much will the ufc pay him cause he already said that thereason for him not signing with strikeforce is cause of a pay cut..
I have the feeling that he got a HUGE signing bonus here..
i don’t think so. I think he will get one for getting to the finale. I mean we already know that he’s going to fight on the finale either for the contract or as a prelim fight. I bet you the bonus comes from there
If he's not guaranteed anything before joining he wouldn't sign
Kimbos manager said that strikeforce didn’t offer him a significant pay cut yet they still refused..

Spike TV actually helps pay a portion of two TNA wrestlers’ salaries (Sting and I think Kurt Angle) in an attempt to raise ratings for them. Spike might have offered to pay Kimbo for this. Probably not, but I just thought I’d put that out there.
That’s very plausible.

I’m not bashing kimbo at all. If Kimbo wins the damn thing fine. If he doesn’t it ain’t going to break my heart. I don’t care about Kimbo but don’t sit here and act like he’s the saving grace of TUF.
Like him or not (most hardcore MMA fans don’t) he is tv ratings gold and that is what makes the entertainment world go around.
Ok he’s rating’s gold but for me personally, I was going to watch TUF no matter what. I never mentioned anything about his broad appeal to the sport. I don’t care.
Yes but when you get right down to it we aren’t the target audience for TUF the casual fans are. It’s a great lead in show for Manswers.

Bolts from the Blue // "Game over." - Jamal Williams
Bloody Elbow // "Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats." - H.L. Mencken
he’s ratings gold
Exactly why I think he got paid to do this.. If I was him, and strikeforce offered me a small pay cut from my 500k, and all the ufc offered me is a normal tuf contract, why wouldn’t I take the money?
by Anton Tabuena on Jun 2, 2009 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions
Exactly and that was the point that was being made all along here. SpikeTV has a lot of control over what does and doesn’t make it onto TUF and it’s not like they would be above paying someone a butt load of extra cash to do one of their “reality shows” to boost the ratings. That has nothing at all to do with Dana White.
Again
Read the comment ^
Kimbo would get easy money from strikeforce.. Sure the ufc won’t give him money as big as that but they still have to do something to convince himto take their offer. Like cash plus the opportunity to get big sponsors and to fight in the ufc..
It’s not that hard to understand. Why is it so impossible for you that they’d give him a signing bonus?
by Anton Tabuena on Jun 2, 2009 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions
They don't have to throw money at Kimbo.
He just made half a million dollars to get his reputation wrecked. At this point, Kimbo has to care more about legitimizing himself than he does money.

I don’t think he’s struggling for money. I honestly believe Kimbo wants to be considered a real MMA fighter. Dana knows he doesn’t need to throw money at a guy that got embarrassed by Seth Petruzelli. Spike knows that TUF is their ratings cash cow, they don’t need Kimbo to get people to tune in, especially after the success of UFC Undisputed.
I just don’t think this is about money. Kimbo wants to fight in the UFC and if competing on TUF is what it takes, he appears to be humble enough to give it a go.

I just don’t get why Kimbo making ridiculous money at Elite means he is demanding ridiculous money from the UFC. Kimbo knew he could get outrageous cash, he was a media gold mine. He knew what he was worth to a fledgeling organization and he laughed all the way to the bank. You can’t fault the man for taking advantage of the hype, even if he didn’t live up to it

It’s just, Kimbo has been KILLER hush…I mean, the only thing we heard from Scott Coker about Kimbo was that he pretty much could care less, and definately wouldn’t be making him a headliner…and that was that. I didn’t expect Kimbo to go for TUF…at all, and I really doubt Dana would throw money at him to be on the show…Dana can’t stand him. So my guess is, either Spike picked up the tab, or Kimbo stepped up.

Coker just said:
Whether its Fedor, Andrei Arlovski, Takanori Gomi, or another top fighter, we want to keep our doors open to any free agents of this caliber. Our goal is to build the best roster that Strikeforce can create, and I think we’re on our way to doing so.
As far as Kimbo goes, we would like to have him fight in Strikeforce at some point.
If you apply for a job and the hiring manager says, we can’t hire you know, but we might get in contact with you “at some point”….I wouldn’t be expecting a call…ever. haha But thank you for the direct quote, I’m too lazy for all that. lol

I have to admit I’ll be tuning in for this.
White promised "some major surprises" as he announced on a Thursday conference call that Jackson and Evans, each of whom is a former light heavyweight champion, would serve as coaches on Season 10.
He declined to say anything further but urged reporters on the call not to miss media day, which is Tuesday at the UFC Training Center in Las Vegas.

The list of heavyweights from the only other time they have had them on TUF:
Mike Whitehead, Dan Christison, Rob MacDonald, Tom Murphy, Keith Jardine, Seth Petruzelli, Rashad Evans, Brad Imes, Kerry Schall, Eli Joslin
Most of those guys dropped out of the heavyweight division as soon as the show was over. It’s quite possible that we will see the same with the up coming season.
I’m hoping that the quality of prospects at hw has gone up a lot since 2005 (although some very good light heavys came out of that season). Was just talking earlier today in a different discussion about the chances for some bigger than life elite athletes to jump into the heavyweight division in the future and how great that would be.
i have said the same thing
imagine MMA keeps growing and instead of basketball, someone of the same physical stature decides to take Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu. I think we are going to start seeing ridiculously gifted people making the sporting decision to take up MMA. scary to say the least. instead of growing up getting into fights after school and during their “doorman days”, now they are coming home from summer camps at Militich and/or AKK training centers.
good luck in life!
Imagine a guy with size and athleticism like Brock Lesnar but has started training MMA in his teens instead of his 30’s. There are lots of very athletic, very big men out there it’s just that pro football snags a lot of them up, as money starts to go up in fighter pay we could see some elite level athletes chosing MMA as their first choice instead of something to try later in life.
by who me on Jun 2, 2009 2:34 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
The other factor besides money is the fact that many elite athletes become stars when they are like 12 years old playing basketball or football. That won’t be possible for MMA.
I dislike Matt Hughes.
Most college players don’t make it to professional ball sports but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t exceptional athletes, for that matter there are guys who make the NFL but don’t stick (Rex Richards) that MMA offers a opportunity to. I expect that the future of the heavyweight division will be something to see.

This is a master stroke from Zuffa..
Win or Lose they get a chance to build the character of Kimbo Slice through free TV and to all the fans.. If Kimbo keeps a level head and becomes a likable character they just built themselves a new cash cow.. Plus now Dana can rescind his statements of past and say that Kimbo is taking MMA seriously… etc. etc. etc. If Kimbo can make it to the TUF Finale as a finalist then they have a serious chance at making a ratings blockbuster.
This is huge.
And if he loses at any point, it becomes ‘my competitor’s headliner, who fought on CBS and lost in 14 seconds and lost to a guy that didn’t win TUF, couldn’t win TUF. Who do YOU want to watch?’

Doesn’t matter. His mere existence on the show implies that Dana is hurting for ratings for TUF.
"A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on." - Sir Winston Churchill
It would be Spike that would be overly concerned with the ratings too. Of course I thought the ratings for this season were doing pretty good and last seasons antics spiked the ratings a number of times.
Ultimate Fighter 9 ratings for Spike TV ‘best in years’
http://mmamania.com/2009/04/03/ultimate-fighter-9-ratings-for-spike-tv-best-in-years/
Overall the ratings for this season have been about the same as normal, anything over a 1 is a good rating on SpikeTV.
I don't think Dana is hurting for ratings
he recognizes the potential for Kimbo as a ratings draw and if the opportunity to sign him came up why wouldn’t he?
Pro Elite fraudulently paraded him around as a world beater and a legit headliner.
Dana is promoting him on a show about guys not yet ready for primetime getting a shot via a tournament of their peers.
You’re right, you caught Dana red handed…

Dear Affliction,
When the organization you’re competing with gets a guy from the corpse of one of it’s former competitors (a guy that headlined cards) to compete on it’s reality show and that action generates more media coverage than you putting the best fighter in the world against a chronically overranked opponent, it’s probably time to pack it in.
Hugs and kisses,

Well if the alternatives are companies that run themselves into the ground like Affliction has then that’s where it will end up. Competition purely for competition’s sake is pretty silly, the goal is to get the best product not the most diluded one. Even though Affliction has offered up some good fights in a business sense they aren’t doing the sport much good, particularly when compared to a sucessful organization like Strikeforce.

Knowing Dana he might be keeping this such a secret about the roster to put up all kinds of crazy competition against Kimbo.
It would be funny if he had Roger Gracie, Jeff Monson and other good heavyweight submission artists all lined up to be contestants against Kimbo.
But Kimbo is definitely gonna be getting some bread and Dana will look either like a genius for turning Kimbo into a profitable draw again, or a genius for making Kimbo look like the B rated fighter that most people assume he is, and might be.
Either way it will be exciting television.

23 names for a 16 man tournament? Still some guys seem to be popping up on multiple list so it could be getting somewhere. Honestly this is the first season in a long time where I have been really interested in who’s going to be on the show beforehand. You got to wonder who will be sharing a house with Kimbo Slice.
Unless he losses real bad or gets kicked off the show, this pretty much guarantees that he will at least get 1 UFC fight on the finale.
Maybe he can actually benefit from some good training as well.
I dislike Matt Hughes.
He better train with Rashad then
Cus honestly I don’t think Rampage’s training is that great…..
Although his style would be more like Rampage sans the wrestling base. He definitely wouldn’t have Rashad’s speed.
TUF will be huge this season
It’s really like TUF: The Hip Hop edition.
Rampage, Rashad and Kimbo honestly fit the ‘black’ stereotypes that are promulgated by the media. It should capture a large African-American segment.
Alot of people might look at this and think “RACIST!” But I do see what you mean, because I made 200 dollars on a bet at hooters against a ton of black dudes who had Rashad beating Machida…they have shown up to every Rampage/Rashad fight. I could only assume the same goes for kimbo.
And it is wise that the UFC is trying to tap into the African-American demographic.

if people read that and shout ‘RACIST’ because I know I’m not…..lol.

Predicting...
- The other fighters will call out Kimbo on getting KOed because he walks around the house with a big head.
- The coach of the sans-Kimbo team constantly berating the other team for not fighting Kimbo / some issue with Kimbo failing to get picked to fight because of his status
- Dana coming to the house to counsel Kimbo on his insecurities and temper issues.
- Kimbo ripping on the wrestlers because that’s “not how he used to earn bread”
Please add to the list…

A wise man told me don't argue with fools
Cause people from a distance can't tell who is who
Good for Kimbo
The guy hasn’t done anything wrong when it comes to MMA. He is what it is (ugh). It’s been the promoters who have put him in horrible situations career-wise. Hopefully Kimbo acquits himself well enough. Doubt that will be easy with the likes of Rampage and his dimwitted antics around, though.
That said, I haven’t watched a single episode of TUF and this news doesn’t change my intentions at all.
Kimbo made his rep as a street-tough guy who will fight anyone. When he couldn’t put away James Thompson, that was enough red flags to dent his hype for the hardcore. Then he appeared shaken to fight Petruzelli last minute (which is a common occurrence & got KO’d. Some of this is beyond his control, but if he never had the self-promoted street cred at all, he wouldn’t have had any to lose.

If he never had the “self-promoted street cred”, he’d still be living in his car pondering the philosophical merits of whether or not to beat the crap out of the next passerby and take their wallet.
Kimbo was always pretty upfront about his place in the sport. I just can’t fault the guy for much of anything when it comes to his MMA career. What’s wrong with taking the opportunities thrown your way?
If you want to knock the guy for being a lousy fighter, well, okay then. Though, I’m not sure how that’s germane to my previous comment.

I would wager if you go to the type of backyard fights he held, not every successful fighter would have that same attitude. His persona led to being promoted a certain way, which wrote the proverbial check he couldn’t cash. I do think away from the camera & the hype, he’s a decent guy with more self-awareness than most people give him credit for. I also think he could be a decent fighter with enough training – a Liddell-style sprawl & brawler perhaps. Now that the hype has dissipated after a 14s KO to a pink-haired LHW (something that would damage anyone’s reputation), I’m interested in knowing the substance behind it.

Kimbo is going to be on TUF, where he will most likely get his ass beat (some of the other talent rumored for this season is pretty damn good). Lets not act like the UFC signed Kimbo to headline a PPV for a title belt they are putting him in the TUF house for free. Everyone is “stoked” over seeing the guy stuck on a reality show with guys who seriously want to kick his ass in the cage to win a contract instead of main eventing against cans in a sketchy promotion.
