It’s the only way anybody is ever gonna see the Couture/Fedor fight.

Not even, Couture won’t be in this game either.

I thought that Couture was signed to EA and that’s why he wasn’t in the UFC game.

Yeah, for Command and Conquer…I don’t think they straight up signed him for his entire video game usage…if they did though, then yeah he would be in this game.

What happened to EA’s stance that they wouldn’t create an MMA game without the UFC liscense? I don’t remember exactly where I read that, but I thought a head guy from EA stated that?
THQ better get on 2010 pronto, or they’re screwed.
Nah I think both games can co-exist. If THQ ever goes under I’m sure EA will be making both UFC 2010 and MMA 2010 every year.

No way would EA continue to produce both titles. One of them would be scrapped for sure. Most likely is that the MMA series would be changed to a UFC theme and add the fighters into their setup.

Do you know anything about EA? Trust me if THQ goes down Dana will shop another dev if EA doesn’t agree to do a stand alone yearly UFC game, which they WILL do. They have that kind of $$$

I know a whole lot about EA. There is no chance they would spend the money producing two different games for a niche sport. They would abandon one and continue producing the other.
"Japan is half-Machida" - iiowyn
Of course unless both games sell well which I do think is going to happen. If made right EA MMA will sell well I’m sure of it. I can see them shipping both games in a nicely spaced schedule between the both.

Thats called cannibalizing your profits. If EA made their own MMA game and then got the rights to the UFC license they would shoehorn the UFC fighters into their game engine (especially if EA MMA was a hit). Why spend twice as much money developing two games? The segment of the market that would buy both games is very very small so there would be no reason to keep both franchises running.
"Japan is half-Machida" - iiowyn
What makes you think EA MMA will sell well?
That entire roster couldnt even sell a ppv. Get your head out of your ass and realize nobody knows what the fuck “MMA” is… people only know what the UFC is.
Not only that… the hardcores already own undisputed – why would you buy 2 MMA games? especially where one doesnt even have the number of users needed to enjoy multiplayer game play across distance?

Take your own advice for once man. You do know that people buy both NBA 2K9 AND NBA Live, right? Why would I not buy UFC AND EA MMA where I know Im going to have a better product in a EA Tiburon ( one of if not the best sports games devs out there)developed game? Its not going to have the same fighters and this way people get the best of both worlds. I know, I know you’re mad because.

“UFC is the NBA”
In your mind. Actually UFC is WWE, like Big John said last Friday on Inside MMA. You actually think every other MMA promo is gonna die leaving the UFC to reign supreme over MMA forever like the NBA and NFL do in their sports? PFFT! Stop dreaming Dana. Weren’t you the one that said Affliction was done ages ago, yet here they are again about to put yet another stacked card on and saying there will be a 4th, 5th and 6th show as well?! Even though I love me some UFC and am one of their biggest supporters I hope that Strikeforce gains steam and also becomes a household name so that doughebags like you can STFU! Its all about MMA not just the UFC man…

close your eyes for a second and imagine EA announcing a football game around the CFL… The game play could be the best but it wont sell for shit,,,
Are you understanding this yet?
Well, then you say strikeforce with showtime and CBS (CBS has yet to make any commitment – but ill leave that for now) will make it a household name…
Pro-elite was on showtime for more than a year and had 3 shows on CBS! How do you think that game would have done?
This is why you’re a moron:

I’ll make sure to shoot an email to EA Sports head Peter Moore and let them know that they should stop everything at once. It’s a lost cause. They shouldn’t try competing.
Anyway I’m done with it, IMO EA getting in on this is a good thing.

I agree its a good thing.
How much do you wanna bet this ends up being a WEC game?
By the way the UFC is more than the “NBA” “NFL” and “MLB”.
The actual sport is called “Ultimate fighting”, “UFC” or “UFC fighting”.
In what other sport is the perdominant league or org used to describe the sport?
I’d like it if Zuffa allows its WEC fighters to be in the EA MMA game but I don’t think theres enough fighters for it just to be a stand alone WEC game. You prob have more inside info than me and come to think of it the EA MMA logo and WEC share the same tribal theme lol.

Hell for the purposes of this discussion the UFC being the WWE is the same exact thing, the are the only promotion who’s name would sell a video game in the US if it was put on the cover. This has nothing to do with with heads in Dana’s ass or any of the retarded internet love/hate of the UFC it has to do with the basic fact that for casual fans in the US the UFC is all they know or care about and that is the target audience for a MMA video game.
He might be a real dick about this but he is absolutly correct. Unless it says the UFC on the cover then you aren’t going to get any traction off of the game license saleswise. None of the other orgs have a name brand with enough traction to sell a MMA fight game off of in the US. If we were in Japan then it would be the same exact point except you would replace “UFC” with “Dream or WVR” because that is what is known in that market. It’s simple brand recognition, the UFC has it and the other’s don’t.
Fenix, I fundamentally disagree. The long arc of history bends towards single org domination of male sports. MMA will be no different.
by Derek Suboticki on Jun 2, 2009 12:22 AM EDT up reply actions
In the long run I very much agree…but not in the beginning stages for any pro league/organization. Almost every sport had many years of competition form other leagues/organizations.
There are also many other factors in common in the formation of this historical arc. These sports mostly all have free feeder programs (college/high schools) that brought vicarious life long fans. They all have had substantial cheap quality programming/accessibility to sport. I’m sure there are more, but those are two big ones of the top of my head.
With you on this one.
For years FIFA was a pale imitation of a football game compared to Pro Evo, but generally sold more because it had official licenses. Casual fans just wanted to play as their heroes and people they knew. EA’s MMA game featuring WAMMA undisputed champions will be irrelevant for the most part. If they make a really good game (along with the inevitable slick presentation that accompanies any EA game, and god-awful soundtrack too), then it may sell decently, but it wont reach anywhere near the numbers of UFC 09.

Theres no way they do that. It would suck balls. I was talking about it over at Joystiq.
I’m sure they’re gonna lock up Strikeforce (for sure), maybe Affliction and or Dream/Sengoku. There are a bunch of names not in the UFC.
Fedor
Gina Carano
Babalu
Mayhem Miller
Eddie Alvarez
Barnett
Lil Nog
Brett Rogers
Kid Yamamoto
King Mo Lawal
Kevin Randleman
Gilbert Melendez
Josh Thompson
Jeff Monson
Bob Sapp
Aoki
Alistair Overeem
Nick Diaz
Robbie Lawlor
Jake Shields
Bobby Lashley
Cung Le
Frank Shamrock
Ken Shamrock
Phil Baroni
Mousasi
Theres a TON of names not in the UFC. By the time this game comes out just about all these names should be familiar to MMA casuals since Strikeforce has the Showtime and CBS TV contracts in place. I cannot fucking wait!!

I still say by the time the game comes out and with EA’s marketing muscle even the not so recognized names WILL be recognized.
I can see EA doing Madden style tourneys and the likes. This game will start blowing Fight Night outta the water.

If EA throws a lot of muscle behind this game, I could see it making some inroads. However, they have a lot of games to attend to that will require a great deal of marketing, so I truly wonder to what extent they can bulldog this into a hit.
I suspect that they’ll monitor the amount of chatter that this game’s announcement receives and use that as the adjudicator in how hard to push it.
It’s actually kinda weird: unless this turns out to be a gigantic surprise hit, I don’t see anybody profiting on this, especially EA, save Strikeforce (and Affliction if they’re still alive at that point). Really, this is the biggest news for Strikeforce since they purchased those assets from Pro Elite.

To further my point:
* Army of Two: The 40th Day
* Battlefield 1943
* Battlefield: Bad Company 2
* Brutal Legend
* Dante’s Inferno
* Dead Space Extraction
* Dragon Age: Origins
* EA Sports Active
* EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis
* FIFA 10
* Fight Night Round 4
* G.I. JOE: The Rise of Cobra
* Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
* Madden NFL 10
* Mass Effect 2
* MySims Agents
* NCAA Football 10
* NHL 10
* Need for Speed NITRO
* Need for Speed SHIFT
* Spore Hero
* Spore Hero Arena
* The Saboteur
* The Sims 3
* Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10
That’s just the 2009 lineup. Needless to say, they’ve got more than enough on their plate outside of trying to do all the marketing for a 2nd tier title about a fledgling sport without the backing of a wildly profitable financial backer.

Most casual fans don’t even know strikeforce or affliction or japenese MMA even exist. I was talking to some guys at school a couple months ago about mma and asked them what they watched. They said UFC and Bully Beatdown… I think you are highly overestimating EA and strikeforces ability to make these guys well known. The only way these guys become known to casual fans is if they join the UFC.

Or they could just use fictional characters and a well defined character creation setting. They don’t have to have a bunch of licensed fighters at this point for a 2010 release, particularly when the UFC license is up for grabs in 2011.
Or they could just use fictional characters
Hell no, that would be EPIC FAIL!
This isn’t 2K Sports here. EA isn’t that stupid. If they’re gonna go into this thing I’m sure they will be working with Coker and Co.

It’s been done before and honestly non-UFC MMA is so far from the mainstream in the US licensing a bunch of Strikeforce guys isn’t going to give them that much of a boost. They would get more out of calling it “Randy Couture’s” MMA punchout over EA Strikeforce MMA. I can see licensing Dream or WVR if you want to push it in Japan but that would have little or no marketing push in the US. Lets face it these things are for video game fans that are also casual MMA viewers not the relatively small hardcore internet MMA fanbase, most of the guys on that list have no value at for US video game marketing and the organizational brand names (which is the real prize because that is what you put on the front of the box) just aren’t that strong. It is quite possible for EA to be using 2010 to sell the game mechanics and planning on bidding for the UFC rights in 2011, that posibility shouldn’t be overlooked.
if what you say were true…
Gary shaw would be owning MMA right about now.

lol I think we’ll be seeing a lot of game updates from MMA Supremacy…
But yeah this should be good. I woudn’t mind two mixed martial arts games out there, and now I’ll probably be able to play as people like Fedor, Nick Diaz, Frank Shamrock… Minowaman?
The only problem I see is that EA isn’t really being closely supervised here and may resort to the general publics feelings on MMA and focus on brutality and what have you. Them not being overseen might be a good thing in that they might be willing to experiment with some things THQ didn’t (like fouls) but I don’t want to see the introduction of fatalities or anytihng…
Apart from the people that know what MMA actually is, EA might have to spend some time educating some people which will be nice. Or else the ignorant masses might think this is some second tier baseball/basketball/football league.

you guys that are really critical are right. ea doesnt know anything about how to market games. it must be a miracle that they got to be as big as they are and just the ignorance of the public that had thq nearly bankrupt, i am sure. its definitely not at all funny to hear people talk about how theyll never sell a game by pointing to how their other sports titles move units either. not at all.
by nigelzackit on Jun 1, 2009 10:45 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
Their other sports titles are tied to big name sports franchises, that makes a huge difference, fans don’t buy a football game they buy a NFL game. Besides lets not pretend EA sports hits 100% homeruns with it’s video game releases, there are no guarantees. Of course EA knows this too, I expect them to go after the UFC license pretty hard in 2011.
EA love the move.
First, I don’t see them making a bunch of money off of this, if any. On the other hand they are going to get a lot of benefits out of this regardless how much money they loss. EA is a giant and they have no problem losing money. They will run any old crappy game to market. More often than not they will recoup most of their losses and then they will have those few big games that just print money.
All this means is that it gives the fighters a ton more options then they had. Dana pretty much requires that his fighters sign away their rights forever. If they already have a deal well he can’t force this anymore. This also helps EA because it really puts the pressure on THQ which is really hurting.
Pretty much I see EA spending $3 for every $1 THQ spends and just spending them out of business. I hope this doesn’t happen, but it’s hard to compete in these cases.
EA also can take this game in a way that is much more than just sport. It can include the Japanese entertainment (Pro Wrestling) and fighting (Tekken) along with the sporting aspect.
I have a lot more why I love this move, but other things are more pressing…hum…maybe freecell?
EA
there are so many gamers who swear by EA sports. They may go the fight night way and get some retired guys to sign over their names. Randy would be in it if EA has his rights. Fedor, some old guys… youd have enough. Build it more around the create a fighter.
EA makes the best sports games by far and with THQ going under, EA may be able to pick up the UFC rights from THQ once they have their own platform.
