Is Mirko Cro Cop Officially Signed to the UFC? Satoshi Ishii Finally Makes A Choice!
There have been some contradicting reports as to where and who Mirko Cro Cop will be fighting next. What else is new, right? Mirko himself released a statement that he would be fighting at UFC 99 in Germany against Mostapha Al-Turk. The problem was that Todd Duffee was slated to face Al-Turk at UFC 99, which is now mysteriously missing. Todd Duffee even appeared on Friday's InsideMMA episode to clear up the situation by stating that he is still training for and fighting Al-Turk at UFC 99 and that, to his knowledge, Mirko was not even signed to the UFC yet.
So what is going on? It looks like Dave Meltzer may have some inside for us:
--We've been flooded with e-mails on this one in the last 24 hours. The Mirko Cro Cop deal for the 6/13 UFC show is that Cro Cop has not yet signed his contract so the fight isn't being advertised, but everyone is still under the impression Cro Cop is fighting on the show in Cologne, Germany.
...
They were hopeful it could be signed by tomorrow but there is a holdup that doesn't have to do with Cro Cop/UFC negotiations.
So what could be these holdups that have nothing to do with Cro Cop or the UFC? There are a few theories out there, and they mostly deal with Cro Cop either having a non-exclusive contract (which is unlikely in the UFC) or they could be hitting a contract extension clause from Mirko's DREAM contract, which is also pointed out by FightLinker.
Back when Mirko left the UFC and signed with DREAM, he stated that there was a possible contract extension after his 3 fights are over with DREAM:
On Dream and the contract
My dream has come true, I'll fight in Japan again. I've signed a three fight contract with a possibility of extension.
It's where I had some memorable moments, where I feel at home. DREAM is a new organization with a good management and huge potential. Japan is a big market and these guys know how to bring something to a high level. I'll do my best to help them on that way.
DREAM may decide to exercise this clause, since they are advertising Mirko on a flyer as a participant for DREAM.10.
Another scenario is that when Mirko signed with the UFC, his manager mentioned that his contract with the UFC was "special" and it was non-exclusive.
this is from Kamipro move(handiphone only news site)
"ordinary contract to UFC is domination contrast.but Mirko’s contract will be special…(He can fight japanese promotion too?)".
Could some misunderstanding have occurred in the process of negotiating Mirko's return to the UFC? Either way, the delay for Mirko to officially sign with the UFC is impacting the UFC 99 event, fighters, and the potential to advertise one of the biggest European stars for their Germany event, which could use some positive publicity and a big European star after the backlash Germany has given the UFC.
The UFC was hopeful they could get Mirko signed by today, but even this most optimistic scenario would give them less than two weeks to officially promote Cro Cop for their UFC 99 event.
They wanted Cro Cop to sell tickets to people coming in from Croatia, but the longer they wait to announce it, the harder it'll be to get people to travel in.
So it's now official, Mirko seems to have finally signed for UFC 99.
Satoshi Ishii Signs With Sengoku
In other news, Satoshi Ishii, who was previously announced to be signing with the UFC, announced in a press conference today in Tokyo that he will be signing with Sengoku on a multi-fight deal. NightmareOfBattle has the scoop:
A press conference was held in Tokyo today, announcing that 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist in Judo, Satoshi Ishii, has signed with World Victory Road to fight in their SENGOKU event. No debut date was announced but he is expected to debut within the year. This is easily the biggest signing of the year and a HUGE signing for WVR.
Update #1: Ishii has signed for more than one fight. He has signed a provisional contract and on Thursday he will sign the real contract at an open to fans contract signing event in Japan.
This is a pretty big deal for Japanese MMA and specially for Sengoku, considering that DREAM is currently struggling to put on great MMA events on TBS that garner high ratings. A fighter like Ishii would have given them another star to build that could produce Akiyama and KID like numbers. It will be interesting to see where Sengoku goes here, as they are becoming a force in Japan.

Oh, wouldn't that just make your day if he wasn't
I can’t imagine Dana confirming this to Meltzer without being sure.
As a side note, whoever holds a piece of paper and tries to keep CC from fighting in Germany can go to hell.

Oh
And Germany gave MMA ‘backlash’ (even though MMA didn’t do anything to provoke it), not the UFC specifically. He used the term ‘Ultimate Fighting’, but he also made the argument that GnP was staged, just like pro wrestling, in which case it would hardly be for ‘Nazis who… stomp people in the gutter’.
There isn’t a thing that Dana, Cro Cop or Jesus Christ can do that will convince these people otherwise.

Actually...
My ideal situation would be if the UFC let Cro Cop sign a non-exclusive contract so that he could fight in the UFC and DREAM. That would be great, but probably impossible.

Are you sure your idea situation doesn’t involve CC in DREAM laughing about how the UFC went bankrupt after Dana was nailed for tax evasion or something?

Nope,
Dana thrown to jail on boxercise scandal!
I kid =)

why? if someone has a binding contract, shouldnt he have to fufill it like randy did with the ufc?
by nigelzackit on Jun 1, 2009 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm just going to quote what who me already told you
Jeff Monson, Tim Sylvia, Cro Cop,…. the UFC has let many guys out of contracts when asked before without it being an issue at all. Randy was different he didn’t ask he quit with a belt and then all but dared them to try and stop him fighting someplace else. The Randy situation is a completly different situation that has nothing to do with this topic.

Thank you for quoting my perfect-fail article. When people don’t even bother to comment, you know it’s bad.
Next time will have more than five minutes of effort, believe me.

This dude quoting you is not necessarily a good thing.

Hahaha...
Don’t pay attention to subo, you had some good stuff in there, and i added to the subject at hand.

I read it somewhere that ishii was planning to get a few fights in japan to get experience then he wants to go to the UFC..
Training with machida must’ve helped a lot. and i really hope he does well.. could be a bit undersized at HW though..
by Anton Tabuena on Jun 1, 2009 5:11 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I think everyone agrees that if it is possible, he should cut to LHW, but Japane is in need of a HW, specially since WVR already has King Mo, so I see HW in his future, ala Fedor.

Thanks for the scoop on Ishii
The guy made the best possible choice. WVR is known for methodically developing its talent pool. With Masato announcing retirement by the end of this year and Yamamoto’s early exit from Featherweight GP, Japanese Kakutougi scene needs to produce new stars to be of any interest for mainstream public.
I’m however sceptical about assigning Ishii to any weight class. He is admittedly an undersized HW, but seems to carry too big of a body frame for LHW. His case just begs for a (Super-)Cruiserweight division.
/What was his weight when competing in Judo?
by Toadie on Jun 1, 2009 7:07 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Checked some websites and he’s listed weighing variously at 238-246 lbs during his senior Judo career. Curiously enough, he was the smallest competitor in <220 lbs division at Olympics to win Gold in over 20 years.

Man, it is too early in the morning to deal with this rumor and spin crap. Gratz to Ishii, guy seems to have a good head for fighting. (as in his head is fucking huge).
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

Great post. I was wondering what was going on with Mirko after seeing that poster. Fingers crossed that non-exclusive UFC deal comes through. Would love to see him fight in the UFC and then over in Japan as well. Sadly, I cant see it happening either.

Non exclusive contracts are bad business decisions by the industry leader.

Cro Cop deal is finally official now. It’s looking like the UFC 99 main card will have six guaranteed televised fights.

Yup, UFC got its man for UFC 99, so now they have to really promote since they only have a few weeks left before the event. I do feel bad for Todd Duffee though, hahaha.

Sengoku was def the best way to go.
Because, unlike orgs like Pride/ Dream, they won’t just up and send MMA neophytes off to fight guys like Fedor, Nog, etc.
I hope Ishii develops into a force, cause I love me some Judo throws.
Supporting all Las Vegas MMA.
'09 is the year of the FW's.

Agreed!
They have done a great job with King Mo, Xande, and previously Roger Gracie.
