UFC 102 Confirmed For August 29th, U.S. vs. Brazil?
Promoted to the front page from the FanPosts by Luke Thomas.
After months of speculation and rumored fight additions, the UFC has officially added UFC 102 to their calendar for August 29th, 2009. Although the organization has not yet announced a location, the event is expected to take place in Portland, Oregon at the Rose Garden Arena, home of the NBA's Portland TrailBlazers.
According to the calendar entry, tickets will go on-sale to the general public on June 20th, with pre-sales for Fight Club members and newsletter subscribers on the 18th and 19th respectively.
The event will be headlined by a heavyweight contest featuring Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and the current rumored card is as follows:
- Randy Couture vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
- Demian Maia vs. Nate Marquardt
- Keith Jardine vs. Thiago Silva
- Matt Hamill vs. Brandon Vera
- Chris Leben vs. Jake Rosholt
- Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Chris Tuchscherer
- Nick Catone vs. Mark Munoz
- Junior dos Santos vs. Justin McCully
- Evan Dunham vs. Matt Veach
- James Irvin vs. Wilson Gouveia
As an interesting side-note: there's a bit of a US vs. Brazil theme permeating this card, with no fewer than six bouts featuring American fighters matched up against Brazilian fighters. This was most likely unintentional on the UFC's part, since the majority of the organization's roster hails from those two nations, but there have been "clash of the nations"-style events in the past, including UFC 58: U.S. vs. Canada, UFC 25: Ultimate Japan 3, and of course, the current season of The Ultimate Fighter featuring Team U.K. vs. Team U.S.

Its a nice looking card. I hope Dos Santos vs. McCully makes the main card but for them to do that they have to drop Leben vs. Rosholt and I’m not quite sure they’re willing to do that.

That listing of fights isn't in any sort of order, btw
I’d expect to see Irvin vs. Gouveia as a candidate for the main card as well, although with the quick finish that will likely result form that one, they might keep it on the prelim card with the assumption that they’ll be able to air it anyway.

What looks to be the top four fights are very solid
Based on Vera/Hammil, Jardine/SIlva, Marquardt/Maia, and Couture/Nogueira, this card looks to be very good and personally worth ordering for my taste. Other fights on the card like the dos Santos fight, Irvin fight, and Leben fight look to have potential for a KO/TKO finish.

I’ve got Vera winning but Munoz is a bit too raw for my tastes.

yeah munoz is still a bit green..
hopefully dropping a weight class gives him a distinct strength advantage to make up for what he lacks..

lol what he lacks being an adequate striking and jiu jitsu game.
But joking aside, he’s a decent prospect but he just isn’t ready for the UFC right now.

I'm hoping octagon jitters and being undersized before was the real reason he lost..
Although I am biased and in denial here.. haha.

this is a much better card than some of the recent ufcs…by a lot. silva/thiago is bangin’ matchmaking. thats gonna be the deciding factor on silvas immediate and probably permanent future.

Yeah, thiago is gonna beat silva up Tyler durden style.

i meant thiago/jardine. thiago loses and that guys momentum is straight dead in the water. but homes does come straight at you and early and jardine sucks dealing with that

Tuscherer
Anybody know anything about him? I watched him fight a couple years ago, but hadn’t heard much from him since. Handing him to Gonzaga seems.. interesting.

Tuscherer is Brock Lesnar’s main sparring partner. I think he also cuts down to 265, but he aint shredded like Brock is, a bit soft looking. Wikipedia is telling me that he was a Division II NCAA All-American, which is a plus but doesn’t put him anywhere near Lesnar or Couture as far as wrestling accolades go, or even Mark Munoz. I haven’t seen him fight but he’s 17-1 and has wins over a few decent guys (Sozsynszki, Mayhem Miller), with his lone loss being in the final round of YAMMA to Travis Wiuff. Considering he’d had two other fights in the same night, I think that one can be discounted. I guess he’s a pretty good prospect.

Jardine deserves a breather
His last six fights were against: Rampage, Vera, Wanderlei, Liddell, Houston Alexander, and Forrest Griffin. Including Thiago, in seven fights he’ll have fought two guys in the top 5, two more in the top 10, and another two in the top 15. He’s really running the gauntlet here. Regardless of whether he beats Thiago or not, I hope Jardine’s next fight is against someone a little easier.

You can say that about any of his opponents except Vera. And Alexander wasn’t top anything when they fought.

Alexander was the one guy I wasn't counting there.
I suppose that’s true about most of his opponents though, although Thiago and Alexander haven’t had nearly the same strength-of-schedule as Jardine. Also two out of Vera’s last three fights were against guys who were kind of cans.
