Can Bloody Elbow members fight?
I check this website probably between 4 -10 times a day, and a lot of my friends bug me for it. One of their constant annoying comments is that they think that everyone on this website couldn't fight if it came to it. Their idiot comments got me thinking how many members are trained in martial arts? So how many of us are involved in the sport? I really want to see how many people here are in martial arts, wrestlers, or fighters. Please post your belt in your martial arts, your wrestling record, and of course if you fight MMA what your record is. I think it would be cool to see how involved everyone is in some form of combat sport. Personally I just started BJJ with the Fargo BJJ Academy with George Andersch (Amal Easton Team).

I’ve done some free BJJ classes at my school gym, and I keep meaning to get around to kickboxing classes but never have the time. My friends and I fight, body shots only, match ups in our back yards.
If we are about to have a bloodyelbow event though, I’ll definitely get in there with another LW that isn’t too trained. I always wanted to have one real match

Haha body shots are gay. My friend and tried it instead of normal jiu-jitsu and it is pointless.

I’m pretty curious about this myself, so I hope a fair number of people respond.
As for myself, I’m a four stripe green belt under “Kiko” France (blackbelt under, I believe, Ricardo Liborio) and Dr. James McRae (purple belt under Burton Richardson/Kiko France). The green belt isn’t universal in BJJ (if I remember correctly, it’s just an ATT thing), but it’s between white and blue.
The emphasis of my training is for the street, as opposed to competition, so I have an very entry level smattering of Muay Thai, Boxing, Judo, Wrestling, JKD, and Gun/Knife training.
That said, I’ve been out with a broken arm for about seven months, so to what extent I’m still of that ability level is questionable. Word to the wise: hammerlocks can cause a spiral fracture of the humerus with a surprisingly small amount of force applied.

Oh and to answer your question itself, no, I probably couldn’t fight very well. My best bet at this point is to jump into some sort of impromptu kata and pray the other guy has a really stupid conception of martial arts.

Well, considering Luke trained at some point with Lloyd Irvin, the many members of the armed forces who post here, and there was this fantastic fanpost all about training, I’d say there are numerous martial artists here. If your friends think training is such a big deal, do they train as well – and why does it matter to them?
Personally, for self-defense, I practice sucker punches to the groin & running away. That’s the upper limit to my skill but it works well so far.

that's garbage
army and any military martial arts is not up to par. I use to be a marine myself, and their “martial arts” program was nothing. You dont really start to learn how to do things until around a greenbelt which would really be like a bjj white belt with 6 months of training. Now as for myself, I am a blue belt in bjj. 6 months, of boxing 2 years muy thai. I Plan to start fighting amatuer bouts by the years end. And i do very well in fights. Have gotten in a couple (didn’t start them) and prevailed with technique and also choked some guys out with anaconda chokes on the streets

Correct. No longer with Team Lloyd Irvin as my membership expired and I put an emphasis on fitness training culminating in my shoulder injury. This is the one I’ll be getting surgery on this Monday. After I’m healed and rehabbed, I’m very likely headed over to 50/50 BJJ with instructors Seph Smith and Ryan Hall. I’ll probably start back with no gi and then after a few months perhaps expand from there. We’ll see how things go.

if you live in the PG county area near Lloyd Irvin, you should check out my school that just opened up in the Bethesda area. Its a Renzo Gracie BJJ school, its called Ground Control, owned by John Rallo (blackbelt under Renzo). Our school is amazing and Im saying that because its peronally not my first school, and the one in Bethesda is the newest of the 3 schools. It’s led by his first blackbelt Rocky, who is a phenomenal instructor. We also do MT,wrestling, etc. but I urge you to check it out for a class, you won’t regret it brother.

As someone who loves to compete, but can’t put enough time in to actually fight in an MMA bout, submission grappling is the way to go. If anyone is in the NYC area, I highly recommend Christian Montes over at Ronin Athletics. Great gym.

Blue belt in Ground Control (Renzo Gracie school), been doing Muay Thai (just training) for 2 years now, and studied for a year and a half (and got a blue belt, but not in the typical ranking of BJJ) at a school called Clinch that taught Israeli Combative Systems, which is a fancy way of saying mostly stand-up and a little ground, with an emphasis on real life scenario and weapon defenses.
ALSO, I plan on taking a year off before medical school and was thinkin about moving to Los Angeles for a year to work at a hospital and train BJJ fulltime to compete. Any suggestions as to the school? Ive been thinkin about 10th planet or LA boxing since Ive been moving towards Rubber Guard as an experiment, and am slowly adapting and getting more flexible… not sure tho..

I spent 2 years wrestling in high school and did pretty well wrestling for a club college team last year. I trained off and on with guys from the Gracie School in Savannah and competed in a few NAGA tournaments.
I thought about fighting…but before I had a chance to learn enough stand-up to not get knocked out before I close the distance, my engineering courses began to steal my soul and force-feed me crisco.
I’m about to start independent training, does anyone know if Eddie Bravo’s books can be used effectively by a big guy?

Ive gotten my knees flexible enough that it is more than effective. I learned by DVD though. I still have much to learn, and especially about his X-guard and half-guard formula, but his rubber guard has gotten me a good number of taps recently

by Captain7 on May 9, 2009 2:56 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
by pulling your leg do you mean bending your shin at the knee? because thats def essential to the rubber guard. but dont think just because youre big that you cant make ur groin and knees more flexible if you work on it. when i started i had ZERO flexbility.. the only thing that might be a little too impractical for a big guy is some of the stuff eddie pulls off from the opponents back as his go-to move when RNC doesnt come easy.
As far as real life scenarios, rubber guard into crackhead control would be CLUTCH if youre on your back and someone is tryin to wail at your face with punches. it forces them to burn their energy in trying to break out and its freakin impossible to land good shots from crackhead or retard control. gives you time to recover from a punch and time to gather your thoughts about subs/ sweeps.

I have eight years of aikido in my past – I quit around 1998, so it really is PAST, and I am well aware that none of those skills would have been very useful in a fight anyway. I am white belt, one stripe chum in BJJ. I’ve gone once a week for the past few months as I have been a poor poor man. The school is great though. Beston Gracie jiu jitus. Royce, Royler, and Rodrigo have all done seminars there. I wasn’t training when Royler came, but I went to the Royce one and it was awesome. Didn’t have enough money for Rodrigo though which was sad.
(Instead of opting for the fighters fist pose, or the stern look, I went for the shit eating grin. Time will tell if I made the right choice).

Do people at NFL message boards have to be former football players?
Curious assessment.. Regardless-
I’m 27 years old, 6’2" and 185. I had a rough upbringing and family life and got into a ton of scraps until very recently, in fact (became a lot more self aware at age 25). As a child I trained in Karate like every other TMNT loving child. I trained Muay Thai for roughly seven years as a teenager, as well as Judo for a time, and have tons of experience training boxing on and off since age 14. At age 23, I committed myself to competing locally in MMA with the hopes of eventually moving on to bigger promotions or landing a spot on TUF. At the time, I re-enrolled in Muay Thai, JKD, Kali (for reflexes) and an MMA cross training program. I’ve had numerous setbacks and changes in my life that have perhaps derailed my dreams of MMA for good (totalling my car and shattering two fingers, broken ribs, running my business, girlfriends discouraging me from fighting and, most recently, being hospitalized on Thursday night because of intramuscular damage causing shooting pain in the left side of my chest and making me think I was fuckin stroking out). Recently, in addition to the sporadic private BJJ lesson (just don’t have the time), I was training boxing again. But I do not and have never considered myself a boxer (though I’m constantly encouraged to apply for my amateur license, I never dreamed of being a boxer).
I don’t think anyone here is about to pick a fight with Lyoto Machida, or even that we all need to have formal training to talk about MMA; but there are clearly many knowledgable individuals here that are qualified to discuss various techniques and disciplines. I think many of us have traditionally considered this topic a no-no, because it’s easy to seem condescending. Very cool discussion, though. Now that the door is open, maybe I’ll start a thread discussing fitness or diet for training. I know I have a lot of knowledge to share on the topic and I’m sure many of you do as well.

It was a conversation about legalities for wearing a helmet on your bike, after the unfortunate Will Ribeiro accident. I was getting shit because I don’t always wear my helmet. Since… you know… it’s totally legal to not wear your helmet off of the freeway in Minnesota. That wasn’t good enough for some people.

That was an issue in a governor’s race here (La) where Mike Foster overturned the laws that required wearing helmets. He didn’t like wearing his helmet riding, so he simply undid the law. His successor, the now-notorious Kathleen Blanco, then put it back into place. Whatever – I’ve always ridden with one (I don’t like the idea of hitting pavement at 60mph+ unprotected), but I get the ride-at-your-own-risk mentality.

Blackout612, I would like to Know where you train because I really want to take some BJJ classes. Any suggestions? I wrestled in high school and made it to state twice, so I am a natural grappler and i thnk i could be really good at BJJ with a little training. (I can tap out all of my friends when we get drunk and wrestle in the back yard, haha.) To bad my striking is terrible!

As far as BJJ, I haven’t attended any top BJJ schools locally (I’ve primarily trained in BJJ privately w/ a Wander Braga trained practitioner, as previously noted, having come from more of a striking background) but there are quite a few to choose from. Warriors Cove, Team Bison (Brett Rogers’ camp) and MMAA (Sherk, Thompson, Lesnar, Menne, Tuchsherer and Larson’s gym) have great BJJ programs that are MMA minded, and their locations are varied. I also have contacts for smaller programs that provide pure BJJ, some of which are much cheaper than the previously mentioned and highly marketed schools (only thing that has kept me away from MMAA for years is their escalating rates). You can catch me at the email address on my profile for more info.

LoL...
boxing as a kid for about 3 years.
I also train mma out of gold medal grappling in woodbridge va. Bjj under Pedro Sauer at OneSpirit and Judo under Maurice Allen at One Spirit.
I am still technically a white belt in bjj, but that’s because I switched schools and predro’s system is different from what I learned at Capital BJJ. I’ll hop on my Blue belt when I get back though.
I’m also a Blue Belt in Judo. I’ve put alot of time in on the mat there this year.
I was training six days a week until this damned deployment.
Hopefully I’ll be fighting in one of the local DC promotions when I get back from the sandbox. My wife will kill me if I don’t hop in the ring soon after all the time I’ve put towards training.
I also do judo and bjj tournaments, and plan on hitting my first wrestling tournament early next year.

Trained a bit locally...
…but I want to drop serious weight before I really commit to it, mostly because BJJ is a lot harder to do well if you’re more Tank Abbott than Roly Delgado… and there’s few guys my size in the gym I go to locally, so sparring can be somewhat uneventful.
But if I can drop the weight and commit four months to serious BJJ and Muay Thai, I plan to fight at a local show for a buck forty nine and a six pack. I’ll probably get my ass handed, but many have been the times I’ve sat ringside and thought, “I could have won that fight.”
The wife has given the okay, so now it’s just a matter of time.
If you see Mark Coleman in person, drop $5 on the floor and watch the fun as he tries in vain to bend down and pick it up.

I am a two-stripe bluebelt in BJJ under Kiko France (black belt from Liborio) at ATT-MO. I also have 5 stripes in the JKDU curriculum from Burton Richardson via Dr. James McRae (2 strip purple from Kiko France, originally awarded purple from Charuto Verrisimo). I’m supposed to be going for level 1 instructor through JKDU and be an instructor for Brazilian JiuJitsu for the Street sometime this summer if permitted by Burton (he likes to meet people before awarding instructorships, but him being in HI and me currently being in MO makes things challenging).
So far I’ve only competed in submission grappling tournaments. Mostly I’ve competed in men’s divisions, partially due to a lack of women’s divisions, and partially because I’m just a glutton for punishment like that. I love competing, but my main objective is training for the street/self defense type situations.
I figure this is as good at time as any, but anybody know of good gyms in Eugene, OR? I’m about to move out there and will need a new place to train.

I’ve got less than 10 and more than 5 amateur boxing bouts (depending where you look).

I’m not a huge combo system fan, but I did alright in my short time online. Balrog just makes things easier.
by subo on May 12, 2009 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
When you’re playing tournament level competition, combos become mostly meaningless. People rarely jump forward, use lots of EX and Focus, spam jabs and fireballs, and almost never do Super’s or Ultra’s (unless it’s after a Focus cancel). I honestly have more fun playing against people that are good, but aren’t that great because they’re more unpredictable. Gridlock fights against high level competition can last for nearly the duration of the time limit each round. It’s part of the reason I like Balrog and Blanka, actually— because they help me close distance rapidly. Whereas, when I play Akuma, I have to spend a great deal of time and effort spamming air fire balls before making my approach.
So yeah… Street Fighter.
I poop rainbows.

There are very few characters I don’t like at all. They are El Fuerte, Vega, Rose and Guile. I’m guessing you were talking about Zangief, primarily? I don’t mind him, but hate people that play as him. Luckily for me, he’s easily neutrilized because he can’t do shit to my Blanka. I like Honda just fine and have even started to like Rufus a bit. Actually, at first I thought all of the new guys sucked, but came around on Crimson first, Abel second and, now, Rufus third. But I’ll never come around on El Fuerte. He’s terible’.

I’ve had some boxing and karate training, and self taught BJJ through Demian Maia’s science of JJ and various other dvds for BJJ and MT. I don’t have the time for real classes (or the $$$) due to my coursework and what not. One of my friends is pushing very hard to get me into some amateur fights but I can’t show up to my internship with knots and bruises. I am however in the process of getting my blackbelt in Psychology (halfway done an M.Ed in Counseling, looking to go for a Ph.D in Sport Psych so I can work with fighters specifically).

Currently in love with grappling. Training at a Gracie Barra BJJ gym here in Aus. I am competing for the first time at the end of this month and again the following month and depending how I go, will get my blue belt.
I enjoy jumping in the ring before BJJ classes with the MMA guys just for shits and giggles. Way too old for all the macho bullshit.

Trained in Jiu-Jitsu and Boxing
Bronze medalist in BJJ at the Best of the Best 9 in Omaha NE. White belt division. Currently a yellow belt under Sensei Conan Schafer at Roseberry’s martial arts academy in Lincoln, NE. I have not competed in an MMA fight yet, I have decided to train before going into the ring. I hate all the guys that come into the dojo and say, “I have a fight in a few weeks, I need to learn some Jiu Jitsu.” Are you kidding me? Anyone who knows anything about fighting MMA knows you don’t train a discipline for a week or two and then feel like you are competent in that area for the fight. Anyway, I have only been doing JJ for about 8 months, but I have shown that I am worthy enough to get my blue belt in July, which means that within a year I have made it from white to blue, I know that this isn’t a huge deal, but for someone who hasn’t been in any kind of good shape or competition sport for a decade, it isn’t bad.

A shit ton of scraps in middle and high school (I just graduated last year, but I calmed down the older I got). Wasn’t a rough neighborhood, but I was small and dorky and got picked on a lot in middle school, until I started fighting back.
Blue belt (the 6th belt, considered intermediate at my particular school) in TKD, dropped out in middle school right before my next belt test, and just recently started again.
Had a year of training MMA for my graduation project in high school. I competed in a BJJ tournament about 2 months into my training (I lost…).
2 back yard “MMA” fights. One against a 180lb (i’m 120lbs) wrestler, who took me down and pounded the fuck out of me for 15 minutes (during which I hit once at the beginning, half way dropped him, after which he immediately took me down). And 10 minutes later against a 135lber, who quite after the first round.

I have trained some combination of Judo, MMA, and Jiu-jitsu for the last two years on and off. So I could probably beat most people who didn’t know what they were doing, but I would probably be in trouble against most others.

On a more serious note…
I have trained in both American and Russian forms of Sambo through some friends, only basic training for a few weeks. But… the Russian techniques have come in handy in saving my ass on three occassions, most notably the “Mugger tackling me on the Bike Trail” incident that resulted in my almost unconscious self armbarring a guy with “The Worst Armbar Known To Man”. I retrospect, I was an idiot.
I’m not going to delve into the carjacking incident. Just too unbelievable stupid, but involved a Sambo armlock while the guy tried to hold us at knifepoint. While I held him and rolled the window up to call the cops and get this idiot arrested, my friend stepped on the gas in a rage. You get the idea.
Numerous bar fights from my college years with some basic Sambo skills really puts you in the win column too, although those days have passed and Sambo can’t avoid 5 people unless you’re Fedor. Lessons learned.
I did some BJJ a couple of times, but the training here in Central Illinois isn’t great, so I haven’t touched that. Did some boxing, and I consider myself to be the next RJJ. Watch it, son!

I’m fairly advanced in an obscure style of karate (was an instructor for years, shortlisted for the national team in kumite, still working on throwing fireballs with regularity), and trained a bit in judo and less so in jiu-jitsu.

TKD and Hapkido from the mid 1980’s to early 90’s; dabbled with boxing during that time as well; defensive tactics training aquired in 12 years in the security field, including firearms (.357, 9mm, Remington 870 shotgun) PR-24 baton, and pain compliance techniques, and enough practical expierence to know that there’s a BIG diffrence between fighting in a controlled environment, and rolling around on the ground with someone who wants to murder you.

i have mcdojo black belts in karate and tkd but I really don’t imagine they would come into huge use for fighting. The Karate one more so because I actually realised when training with my brother that karate is really useful in MMA.
I’ve done 3 years of muay thai including a month long stint in thailand so I consider myself primarily a striker. Have done on and off maybe 6 months of BJJ and consider myself a total noob but I believe I can probably tap most people who don’t train bjj and aren’t over 200lbs.
Can I fight? Yeh I could probably take most of my friends but I’m no tough guy. I’m only 5’7 and 140 lbs so that puts me very much on the small side and I know that size matters.

GUYS STOP WITH THE EXCUSES!
Guys, I understand everyone here is a fan of mma, and tha’ts great, but don’t come with the excuses of “school, married, no time.” it’s all bull! I use to say the same thing until I analyzed what I actually did with my time. Instead of watching tv, go train. On saturdays when your just at your house bored…GO TRAIN! There is more time in your day than you think. I work a 9-5, and go to school 3/4 time. I still find time to get in my 2-3 hours of gym time in a day 4 days a week. Prioritize and you’ll find the time. And I am also married for 2 years now and have a baby on the way and a baby with another woman..If i can find the time you can too. But you must have the passion as well….

I am fundamentally against physical exercise and a pacifist in general…yet I love watching MMA. Go figure. The only fighting style i was ever taught was by my dad, and it was more of a philosophy. IF you get in a fight, win or lose, make sure the other guy and his friends never ever ever want to fight you again.

Like most i started in martial arts as a child. Eventually got a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu under Robert Hansen. He’s not famous but he went nuts claimed he can speak with the dead and landed himself in a pysch ward. A few students from the school went on to train with Matt Serra, one of them being a guy named Aaron Friedman. Remember the name. I did some judo in college but then the partying got to me and became out of shape and now i no longer do anything.

Yellow belt in Taekwondo and some middle and high school wrestling. I would get into other forms of martial arts if it was available at places closer than an hour away.

Bloody Elbow is a great MMA site. While on occassion you will get the guy that probably screams for a “chin to the eye” or some other nonsense it seems alot of people here do understand the MMA game a bit more than the Brock nuthuggers on Sherdog. Myself I am a Black Belt in TKD (Don’t mess with me) and have about 8 years training Thai Boxing.

As a kid I did wrestling for seven years. These days I play badminton, lift (relatively) heavy stuff and run. Badminton really fits me much better than wrestling. I am not a fighter.
I also did kendo for two year. Not good for fighting, but good for nerds who want to get hard soles.

I did Butoku-Kai Karate as a kid (like, late 80s-early90s), and reached brown belt. I stopped because I hit my growth spurt VERY late, and it was no fun training with other people at my level because they were all taller, stronger and more coordinated than me, compounded by the fact that I’m NOT a natural athlete. I just got too frustrated, and left. Then I got really really out of shape. Like, 6’2", 270lbs. out of shape by the time I was 26 years old.
I started training BJJ a little over a year and a half ago, with a smattering of kickboxing and judo thrown in. I realized I loved it and was totally hooked. Now I’m 185lbs., I do conditioning and strength training (I work out with kettlebells and recently ran a 10K road race), and hit up classes at least twice a week, three or four times a week when I can. I’ll never go back to being how I was. Funny thing is, when I started I thought that I was a big guy who should dominate in top control; turns out I’m actually a long, flexible guy who should be going for weird arm locks with my legs.
I’m also a former bouncer (I relied largely on my size to be intimidating and my verbal skills to keep things from escalating, but I know I can drop a bomb now and then… but I don’t enjoy it). I currently train under Adam Zugec at Zugec Ultimate Martial Arts in Victoria and I have a few promotions on my white belt from Marcus Soares. I’m moving to England in the summer and I’m not looking forward to finding another BJJ gym over there; it’ll be hard to find anything that comes close to ZUMA.
