Five ways to improve MMA Live
MMA Live could be a great promotional tool for the sport and a conveniant way for ESPN to not have to cover it on SportsCenter. However, it hasn't matured enough to break away from its internet television status. This is mainly because it is unappealing to all but the most devote fans, and even they may find it a tad boring.
Here are some easy ways to improve the show:
Have Molly Qerim do something else
Cruncing Numbers and The Pulse both seem like filler, and that's because they are. They are so drawn out that Molly's hyperbole seems to bore even her. Molly is obviously not a hardcore fan, but she has some on-camera talent. An easy fit for her would be to have her do what Ariel Helwani has been doing for the WEC: going around and interviewing fighters. MMA Live's budget may not be huge, but they can start with fighters that are within driving distance of Connecticut, and then move out as ESPN embraces the show. Matt Serra is only a few hours drive away and gives entertaining interviews, so that would be a great start.
Bring back MMA for Dummies
While it's clear that Kenny wants to show how important nutrition is to the modern MMA fighter, MMA Round table is boring. This isn't a cooking show, it's an MMA show. There are enough events going on that they could easily take a submission from one each week and have Kenny/Frank Mir/Torres show how it is done. The inverted triangle would have be a great thing to demonstrate, especially since it just happened.
Be an impartial MMA news source
I'm mainly talking about MMA Live's current embrace of WAMMA and their rankings. WAMMA is not the impartial sanctioning body that it claims to be, and MMA Live should realize this. The real problem here is not that they are covering WAMMA's rankings and their "champions," but that they are failing to show the other side of the coin: that WAMMA uses its rankings and belts for its own gain.
Get on TV
The only way that MMA Live is going to reach more viewers is by graduating to television. Even if its time slot is 3AM and it's on the least popular ESPN channel, it will still get more views than it is getting now, especially from the non-hardcore fans.
Nix The 411
If a really big matchup has been announced, then it obviously needs to be mentioned. However, nobody really cares that Nick Cantone and Mark Munoz have been confirmed for UFC 102. Again, this follows the same line of thought as before, less filler and more original content.
The FanPosts are solely the subjective opinions of Bloody Elbow readers and do not necessarily reflect the views of Bloody Elbow editors or staff.

“Bring back MMA for Dummies”
I couldn’t agree more. This was one of the reasons I watched MMA Live. Informing casual fans about technique is what builds hardcore fans. If you understand it, you can appreciate it that much more.
Is nutrition important for fighters? Of course it is, but there is a time and a place for “MMA Round Table” and it isn’t on MMA Live. Anyone that cares about this information knows where to find it otherwise. Maybe they can get some air time on the Food network or something “Cooking with Kenny”.
Actually, the cooking section is important.
1 submission a week = 52 submissions/techniques a year. Assuming they don’t revisit the same technique, that means they will have gone through quite a bit and potentially too quickly.
Besides, Kenny will run out of things to cook with sweet potatoes, and dummies will be back soon. There’s room for both.
Why does MMA for Dummies have to be restricted to submissions? It seems like there is plenty of room to cover other areas of the sport – the clinch, striking, take downs, sprawl…
This is true. How badly do casual fans need a “For Dummies” lesson on footwork? Very, very badly. Much more than they need to learn about how to pull an armbar from mount… since the result is fairly obvious. The BEST use for a segment like that is to start teaching people about the “invisible” parts of the fight that have huge consequences on the outcome.

That’s one of those things that’s so painfully obvious that you know it will never happen.

The problem is since you watch it online, generally at sites like this, all the people watching already know just about everything they are saying. These blogs are just too thorough already
Totally agree
I rarely see anything “new” on MMA Live when it comes to news about fights. And I agree that they should at least bring back MMA for Dummies.
Oh God no.

Everyone always wants to see Bas. Bas is past it. And I hate to say that because I love Bas. But he’s just noise and excitement now, like a kid with an airhorn, and that gets old after a while.

A few thoughts
I think the show is quite good… better than InsideMMA overall…
but a few things I think they can improve…
1. get more guests on the show….
we don’t get to know the fighters enough… so whenever we get a chance to hear a fighter or his opinions on other fights or fighters it’s a great thing.
2. I completely agree about the girl that is hosting the news… totally unnecessary… give her something else to do.
3. would also like to see the kitchen corner gone.
yes, it’s only a 30 minute show so there is only so much tweaking they can do. most of their new news is old news to the hardcore fans, so live interviews with top fighters and guest fighters as comentators would be the single best way to improve the show imo. and more molly querim! she’s the ’eye candy" for the show.
