A public dispute erupted yesterday after the Cologne City Council discussed the UFC's entry into Germany. Event organizers claim that the council is hell bent on foiling the upcoming event.
"MMA is not a sport because it legitimatizes death and serious injury. The only aim is to destroy your opponent." Adding further: "I personally find disgusting ... Here one finds the lowest human instincts. "

Wow. I didn’t see this coming. How does it “legitimatize death”? I thought the Germans were fans of the sport.
germany better be careful. there at that point on knifes blade they could go one way or the other, both ways to the extreme.
from the forest itself comes the handle for the axe
I’m sure boxing is allowed over there, right? Not bashing boxing (because I love it as well) but it’s way more brutal than MMA. UFC needs to pull out the rule book and stats on injuries to prove it to them. Who knows, maybe New York regulates MMA and they can switch the show over if this thing snowballs.

So many ways to go on this.
I guess I will try and take a high road and just say that most people in these positions are uninformed about the sport and are just looking at it through jaded glasses. The funny thing is, I rarely hear any detractors call for boxing to be banned or even kickboxing or wrestling or TMA’s. But apparently if you mix them together it is an abomination.
If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.
There is Also The Setanta Problems In The UK For The UFC
http://mmapayout.com/2009/05/ufc-tv-partner-setanta-entering-crucial-juncture/
The Independent of Ireland has the update on the status of UK broadcaster Setanta Sport, whose negotiations with the English Premier League may decide the fate of the UFC"s TV partner in the UK:
Gotta jump on anything possibly negative for the UFC and spread it everywhere huh?
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
That’s exactly what I am doing. Good job at pointing that out.

God I hate Setanta.
Not sure its in the premierships nature to want to help out Setanta here (hell, if it was up to them, Sky would have all the rights and pay handsomely for it – the only reason they dont is because the EC kicked up a fuss over competition/monopoly laws).
Not all doom and gloom for the UFC though, perhaps this paves the way for them to get onto Sky Sports. THAT is where they want to be. SS used to show Cage Rage events live on a saturday night, so they amenable to MMA programming. And they have a much larger viewership than Sultana.
How dare MMA try and legitimize death in Germany. Everyone knows you can only do that if you have a goofy mustache.
They just want Fedro in the UFC before they will allow it.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
I think I’ve heard this particular song before…

"Legitimatizes"?
I know it’s his second language, but that’s just awesome.
Also, does death even need “legititmatizing?” It already seemed pretty “legitimatized” to me.
Although detractors decry (MMA) as a brutal, bloody form of human cockfighting, aficionados know it is a brutal, bloody, totally fucking awesome form of human cockfighting. -The Onion

I think the point he's trying to make
Is that it legitimizes violence. The underlying assumption is that death is violent. Which is not necessarily true.
I’ve made the claim before (though not here), that combative sports are not violent. They look violent, they are in some respects a simulation of violence, but violence has at its root a lack of consent. At the heart of combative sports is consent. The contest must stop if one athlete-combatant actively removes their consent to combat (tapout, verbal submission), cannot feasibly/healthily continue to consent (they are not conscious, they are injured), or even if their consent is impossible to determine (intelligent defense). All measure is taken to ensure that the contest does not, in fact, turn into a violent event. The goal is not to destroy one’s opponent at all.
I can understand a distaste for something that looks violent. I cannot understand claim that something that LOOKS violent IS violent, and therefore must be removed from society.
