Shaquille Oneal vs Chuck Liddell?
Did anyone watch ESPN First Take this morning? John Burke of Gracie Orlando was on talking to Dana about how he trains Shaq in mixed martial arts, traditional boxing, jiu jitsu, etc.
They talked for a few minutes about what problems training such a big guy presents, what kind of training they do with him, how he does, etc, then they asked Burke how Shaq would do against Chuck Liddell, to which Burke responded with something along the lines of "Stay tuned." She went on again and then later asked what are the chances of seeing Shaq in the Octagon with Chuck, and Burke again responded with something like "Stay tuned."
I certainly can't imagine that this would ever actually happen, but what do you think he might actually be hinting at, if anything? I thought it was interesting if nothing else and thought I'd share and ask if anyone else saw the segment?
Edit: Just found the video.

You know, Fedor must have really lost his luster if the 300+ lbs. non-MMA athletes are now calling out Chuck Liddell.

Excellent.
Maybe a second bracket of DREAM’s MONSTER GP will take place with Chuck and Shaq on it.
Dana White will once again throw down 250k on his boy and once again Dana White will lose 250k.
Yes, please include Butterbean, Zuluzinho, Don Frye, and Melvin Manhoef. That’s all I want. If we are going to provide a freakshow tournament, let’s do this.

Well, I think Zulu would submit Shaq…and Butterbean submitted Zulu…and Ikuhisa Minowa beat Butterbean…but Zulu beat Minowa…so…Shaq via tilt-a-whirl back breaker.
I think Shaq would KO Zulu and could outpoint Butterbean.

Wha?
Dude, Shaq is a basketball player. He’s got bad knees, has a history of abdominal, back, leg and foot injuries, is 37 and is painfully slow. He trains some MMA recreationally. You think just because he’s a big boy he can win MMA fights? His trainer was fluffing him. He’s probably paying him major bucks to train him privately.

You bring up some interesting points.
It would all be dependent upon Shaq’s take down defense if he fought Zulu. Then we would have to look at Shaq’s ground game, which honestly, up until this point, we haven’t see a lot of. So there’s a huge question mark hovering over Shaq.

well
A guy like shaq couldve probably succeeded at just about any sport he wanted to, a la Dwight Howard or Lebron. If a fight was ever going to happen, and Shaq committed to it, I think he’d beat them. Its not like Butterbean and Zulu are lightning fast competitors. Shaq is slow in basketball terms but thats because basketball is one of the fastest mainstream sports around.
Throw in some stupid ridiculous reach with shaq being 7’1 to zulus 6’7, butterbeans 5’11… 10 years training even super sparingly makes most people at least a blue belt…
I dont think its super ridiculous, especially considering I lol’d.

Honestly
I think it will be a gag. Shaq is a big goofball and if he can spend 20 minutes with Chuck they’ll make some kind of YouTube internet meme.

Nah
Nothing will come of this. It was totally hypothetical. Shit like this happens all the time..
I poop rainbows.
It sounds like they invited Chuck to their gym for the same type of “sparring” matchup he did in those videos.

That’s what I took out of it. The way he was talking and the way she randomly pulled out Chuck made it seem like the video or whatever the hell they’re doing is already done.
Jacobson isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I don’t think anyone around ESPN will forget that they had Brock floating around to promote the Randy fight, so if she was just going to randomly pull out a fighter, she would have picked Brock (or someone who’s name she could pronounce).
This whole thing is a bit.
His walking around weight is 325...
…but I can see him making it. What does his collegiate wrestling credentials look like? If he’s used to making the 60 lb. cut I can see him making it for this fight.
well
in the swamps of louisianna they just wrestled Gators so you needed the extra weight to keep em down

I’d complain about you stereotyping us Cajuns, but I did know people in high school who would use a pirogue to get around our outdoor campus when it flooded. And I have some insane stories from the boucheries we used to have. So yeah…

Do you follow the NBA? It is no exaggeration to say that Shaq’s work ethic and refusal to keep his weight down has cost his teams championships.
Motherfucker has four rings. Not a lot of people with four rings (unless you’re a Spur).

That team almost looks better when Howard’s on the bench.

Here's my opinion:
Shaquille Oneal and Johnathon Burke are effin awesome.

What if Shaq was serious about fighting in MMA? A new division would have to be created, but who would be some serious opponents besides Brock Lesnar?
