Tom Atencio says he will fight Dana White at any weight

Tom Atencio said he will fight Dana White in a heart beat (at any weight).  He said Dana's been acting like a tough guy and should step up.  This takes me back to grade school when the new kid picks a fight with the most popular kid in school ... trying to establish himself as a player.

I have 2 questions - should Dana accept the challenge?  and ... Who would win?  Actually, three questions ... who cares?

Cheers!

And thanks for the ‘Who cares’ option

Sometimes I wonder if Tom Atencio is some kind of real world internet troll willing to spend millions of dollars to pull a prank on the MMA community that only he understands? One day he’s going to hold a big press conference where he yells “got ya” and run off the stage laughing like a mad man.

by who me on May 6, 2009 1:37 PM EDT reply actions

There is no reason for Dana to fight him. Accepting this fight only gives TA and Affliction publicity, which is not in Dana’s/ZUFFA’s best interest.

Tom has had pro fights, Dana has not. If he isn’t willing to let Roy Jones fight because it will hurt MMA, why would he see this as anything different?

by MMAcGyver on May 6, 2009 1:45 PM EDT reply actions

This is honestly very pathetic of him.

I poop rainbows.

I guess all that stuff about being a different type of promoter and not wanting to overshadow the fighters was all bullshit.

by Jahbulon on May 6, 2009 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Totally

Right along with paying them what they deserve and treating them right, by asking them to take pay cuts and not scheduling them in any bouts.

I poop rainbows.

Don’t forget refusing to let a star like Tito sit over money issues. The day there’s a benevolent business that succeeds, I’ll be too busy dealing with the monkeys flying out of my ass to be too surprised.

I hear there is a shot that will clear that right up. :-)

Well

Monkey ass-flu does seem like a logical next step.

Yeah, this comes off very pathetic.

"I see him beating Anderson Silva. I see him picking him apart. Him at a 131 years old...(trails off)." - Tito on Belfort at Affliction:DOR

I honestly don’t get Affliction. Every time they seem to make some sort of positive step forward someone comes out and says something incredibly stupid that makes them look like even more of a joke.

Dana shouldn’t fight Tom because Dana isn’t a fighter. You don’t need to be a fighter to promote fights, just like you don’t need to be a fighter to talk about fights, to train fighters, or to report on fights.

by Phildo on May 6, 2009 2:20 PM EDT reply actions

Affliction needs all the publicity they can get. What does it cost to challenge Dana? Nothing, and it causes hype, and gets “headlines”. This is the Affliction way.

Tom knows Dana won’t take him up on it. There is very little downside for this for Tom, aside from the fact that he is a pro fighter challenging a non fighter. This makes him look like an ass (Tito). Looking like an ass is a small price to pay if it can help keep your organization afloat.

by MMAcGyver on May 6, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

The downside is that it makes it look like a joke.

They’re getting headlines in the mma blogoshpere, which is useless. they get headlines there all of the time, they still can’t make money. It really doesn’t make any sense to draw attention to yourself when there is absolutely nothing going on for them, because the discussion is going to surround how foolish he sounds, and how dumb it is that they haven’t announced the next show yet.

Maybe if they had another show announced or were announcing it now, it would make sense to pull some sort of dumb publicity stunt, but this doesn’t seem like that, it’s just another person from Affliction talking out of their ass.

by Phildo on May 6, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

The interviewer asked him if he would fight Dana White. He said he would. Whoop-di-doo. Atencio is training for a fight now so Im sure he would be willing to fight lots of people. How does that make Affliction look like a joke? Would you have preferred that Atencio say he was not willing to fight Dana? Why wouldn’t he be willing to fight Dana?

People are making out like Atencio has been running around town with a megaphone calling out Dana. He just responded to a question posed by an interviewer. sheesh.

by GeeDub on May 8, 2009 6:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree with this

This is being blown way, way, way out of proportion. There is no way this ever happens. He was asked, in my mind, a comical question and people are taking his answer seriously.

He responds to the question with a no comment, he’s labeled a pussy.

He responds to the question with any other answer, he’s a dick.

No win situation.

by Gunslinger20 on May 8, 2009 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Well if he had said “That’s a stupid question, it doesn’t matter because obviously it would never happen” no one would even be talking about it at all or would be saying “Tom got that question right”. It wasn’t a no win situation.

by who me on May 8, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree

Given the fact that this topic is even being discussed in any serious fashion…. the response of “that’s a stupid question, it doesn’t matter because obviously it would never happen”…. the strictly UFC only followers and probably Dana White himself would call Tom Attencio a pussy and that Attencio is scared of Dana White.

by Gunslinger20 on May 11, 2009 8:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Let them fight for pinks! Winner gets the loser’s promotion.

If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.

by BJJDenver on May 6, 2009 2:38 PM EDT reply actions

…not bad. Fedor wouldn’t sign on.

by Derek Suboticki on May 6, 2009 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

And the UFC wouldn’t want any of their other contracts.

by Jahbulon on May 6, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

To squash this feud, they could settle it like men.

Each man starts an MMA promotion and last one to run out of money wins.

So it’s no wonder he now wants to fist fight him.

I poop rainbows.

by Blackout612 on May 6, 2009 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Obviously Tom Atencio has nothing better to do with his time. Meanwhile Dana is making fat stacks. Maybe Tom should spend that extra time doing something for his organization, besides saying stupid things to get publicity.

lol.

well put. rec’d.

The fight will be at 60 000lb.
Dana will be bringing a tank.

Keep firing Assholes!

It must be nice to have such low standards.

Just today we have got:
Dana White vs Tom Atencio- whatever weight grudge fight
Anderson Silva vs Roy Jones Jr.- Strikeboxing
Chuck Liddell vs Shaquille O’Neal

What a card!

by who me on May 6, 2009 10:12 PM EDT reply actions

What if you made White vs Atencio a Sumo suit fight in the Yamma pit and added a Matt Hughes country breakfast eating contest?

by who me on May 7, 2009 2:00 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd take Dana by 315 lb. bench press...

into inverted sexism bar.

Though Atencio would give him a run for his money with his sleek fashion sense.

Supporting all Las Vegas MMA.

Atencio is delusional – there’s no way Dana will fight him. For starters, Dana is not a fighter – sure, he swears more than half his roster combined and walks around acting like he’s the baddest dude on the planet – but he’s no fighter.

Second, why would Dana – as a representative of UFC – agree to anything that gave the competition any free publicity? If he said ok, let’s fight, Atencio and Affliction would get tons of airtime on Dana’s coattails.

Third – why should Dana care? He’s got no reason to feel threatened by Affliction. He can safely ignore this kind of stuff and go buy himself another Hummer.

Atencio-White will never take place.
