Please Welcome Leland Roling to the Bloody Elbow Team
This one's been a long time coming.
I would formally like to announce that arguably the most prolific writer on the site, Leland Roling, is now the new Community Moderator and Special Contributor to Bloody Elbow.
Here's the reality: a guy with the talent and experience of Leland could probably write anywhere, but he wanted to write here. We wanted to bring him on board a long time ago, but we just weren't sure we had the space despite just how helpful Leland would be to Team Bloody Elbow. But his persistence paid off and we realized we needed a guy like that on the team with that kind of dedication and skill set.
So what will Leland do? The same things he's always done in covering MMA from his point of view, but a little more as well. He'll be helping out in engaging the community and making sure high standards are maintained. He'll also be filling in administrative and managerial roles when both Nate and I are absent (Brent Brookhouse as well). We think he's got all the skills and clearly all the motivation to do this job the right way and to make this site function better.
But don't fret. The search continues. We are still looking for community moderators and will be contacting a few of you to fill those roles. But for now, let's all congratulate Leland Roling, the newest member of the Bloody Elbow family.

This was a long time coming
I sure am glad I retook the SAT’s on Saturday, because my employment options are clearly lacking.

What field are you in?
It’s all who you know, and there’s a lot of people here at BE…

Call centers, moving furniture, delivering/building beds, serving tables, delivering pizza, prep cook and vitamin salesman. I’m a jack of all trades.

What's the most important question liberal arts major learn to ask about life?
“Would you like fires with that?”
I love that joke – my mom hates it.

I’m close to that. I can tell somebody why they should choose soup or salad with their entree, and probably pepper that with a modicum of theology and a minor digression into the Roman/Greek origins of their meals. Needless to say, I’m an awful waiter.

Actually, I think you’d be an awesome waiter and most people just don’t appreciate interesting service.

I would give you such a large tip if you did that with me your head would fuckin’ spin.

Sounds like a good start. I’ve never studied any one thing or committed to a single career because I would either get bored or see an opportunity too good to pass up. Keep going that way; it does work out eventually.
Though investing in credentials on the side is never a bad idea.

Absolutely true, and a tribute to the cool community that has formed at BE.

Awesome addition – this place gets better and better.

A well deserved congratulations!!
Was Luke agreeing to build you a soccer stadium the deal closer?
That's great, but how does it affect Lyoto Machida?
by beery_pbr on May 5, 2009 12:19 PM EDT reply actions 4 recs
Initially, Luke mounted an offense on my management stating that they were “crazy Midwesterners” in which we replied “Uhh… thanks for the compliment?”
Then it moved to a discussion regarding how much we could milk out of the deal. Initial negotiations broke down when I wanted to have my camp get some exposure, but I also wanted to continue to compete in Cornbread eating competitions. It was almost a deal breaker until the realization hit me… Cornbread isn’t that great, and my camp is non-existent.
But… the stadium was a huge issue. Problem solved when I realized I could simply rope off a cornfield and put a piece of wood in the ground with my name on it. Stadium done.

Well played, but I think you should have held out for a co-promotion on every article you write. SBNation and Leland Roling present BloodyElbow.com just has a nice ring to it.
But overall I think the exposure gained from this partnership will more than make up for any monies left on the table. There ain’t no money in cornbread.
That's great, but how does it affect Lyoto Machida?
Cornbread isn’t that great
Leland Roling is not my friend.

Listen, I love cornbread… but the college years of ramen noodles, cornbread, and beer have passed me by. I hate Ramen now, love beer, and still eat the cornbread. I say that’s a win-win. I only got sick of one of the three.

Funny how beer always seems to win out. Liquid bread beats solid bread.

Is it unacceptable to swap in other food items made of corn? I mean, traditional Mixtec or Zapotec torillas are frickin amazing (not that you can get them north of, oh, Oaxaca), and it’s hard to beat corn chips with home-made salsa.

What type of college did you go to where, in addition to beer and ramen, there was cornbread being consumed? I went to college in South Carolina so I would have expected cornbread to be there is anywhere but, no such luck.
Glad to see you officially on board with the BE crew. As far as technical writing goes, BE is amassing a pretty solid team.

Oh… we cornbread conniseurs went to college in the farm country of central Illinois.

Congrats Leland!
You have definitely been working hard around here, so it was only a matter of time.
Anyways, really enjoy your writing and work, so I think it is a HUGE addition to the BE staff.
P.S.
I’ll be around to keep you and your mancrush on Melvin in check!
=)
Someone give me a job just to piss this guy off. :-D

I love me some Sexyama!
Good work Leland
Glad to see you join the BE team. Bigger and better.
Congrats
A very welcome addition to the site. Keep up the good work!.
Congrats
87 Fanposts.
Does this mean I’m only 85 fanposts short of becoming a mod?
Keep firing Assholes!
It must be nice to have such low standards.

Well done
It’s always good to see props going out to a fan of Japanese MMA orgs and K-1. Keep it up, Leland.
congrats Leland
always been a fan of your work, glad to see you onboard at BE!
"the spirit of your average dumbass with more overblown rhetoric" OR "the self-appointed savior of MMA"
Congrats Leland :)
I’ve been reading mma-analyst.com for a while, guess I’m going to have to take it out of my RSS feed list now :-P
No problems. I have a lot of email from people clamoring about what has happened to MMA-Analyst.com. Truth is… I’ve upgraded. I now can concentrate more on quality of the articles as opposed to fiddling with development of the site in terms of programming shit into it and competing with bigger sites.
But the main reason I love BE is the community. You guys make it what it is.

I think it’s great that BE has so many quality people (and more to spare who just frequently put up great fanposts) the site has really started to evolve, and it’s great. Congrats Leland!
And hopefully, the community continues to evolve into a smarter community. I notice in a lot of the comments these days that people have generally accepted the structure of debate. Make an argument with elaboration on points, and counter with your own argument with points, and discuss. This hasn’t turned into what the MMAJunkie or Sherdog forums possess. That’s the bonus for everyone here.

LOL, I wouldn’t know how to do it these days. I’ve refrained from ever stepping into the Sherdog forums, and I was one of the first people in the MMAJunkie forums when they first began the system. Unfortunately, I found it very unmoderated and it quickly became a mirror image of Sherdog.
