Demian Maia Doesn't Need Judges
Or at least that's what he told Brasil Combate:
“When I fight for the title, I get out from there as the champion before the time is up, or my opponent does. I won’t let the fight go to a decision,”
There has been a real pronounced push by Maia lately to talk about Anderson Silva at every opportunity. More than likely he's a smart guy who realizes that Thales Leites did him no favors with his showing in Montreal and knows it is going to take a good amount of self-marketing to get the big fight any time soon. Silva has obviously fired his own shots claiming that Maia is pretentious for talking about a title shot but the stories are mainly bouncing around Brazil and not getting much focus in the states.
Demian is obviously doing the right thing in selling himself as a guy who fights to finish and trying to pound it into everyone's head that he is not Thales Leites. Still, I can't help but wonder if he'd do a little better to focus on the upcoming fight with Marquadt and do a little less trying to build himself up with talk through the Brazilian media.

This is going to look really funny when Nate wins.

He did look pretty impressive in his last fight.
I easily wins standing. Most time I would say that a wrestler of Marquardts caliber can decide where the fight takes place but Maia creative takedowns and guard pulls seem to come out of nowhere.
I dislike Matt Hughes.
Except that Nate's not just a wrestler
He’s also a BJJ black belt, and although he’s not at Maia’s level in that department, I think he’s still good enough to avoid Maia’s subs and sweeps.
Yeah, but I have problems believing Marquardt is as an offensive grappler as Maia in any realm of debate. Marquardt strikes me as the methodical type of BJJ practicioner on the ground whereas Maia has the ability to offensively transition from submission to submission.
The counterpoint would be that Marquardt has the defensive BJJ to stop Maia, so it should be a great matchup on the ground.

ummmm....there are different degrees in black belt-ology, i guess
nate will get murked on the ground.
Except that Maia loves chokes. Otherwise, nice.

Dear Mr. Monkey C. Hops,
May 5, 2009
While reading your recent post about Demian Maia, I coughed up a lung. I believe it to be in your possession. I urge you to return it immediately.
Rec’d.

For Maia to get the shot, he’s going to have to get through Marquardt and Bisping is going to have to lose to Henderson.
I think Maia is doing the right thing. Right now, the media wants to talk about the supposed similarities between Leites and Maia. There isn’t much to say about Marquardt vs. Maia right now except that (1) it’s a fight that should’ve been booked months ago and (2) the winner will be at the front of the line.
Maia is debunking the idea that a fight between him and Silva would be the same as the Leites fight, which is necessary self-promotion. On top of that, if he keeps on focusing on Silva in interviews, he is no doubt going to spark “You better be paying attention to me” comments from Marquardt, which always makes for interesting pre-fight banter.
In any case, the middleweight division has quickly become one of the more interesting divisions in the UFC, based purely on the amount of contenders with legitimate arguments for title shots.
Well, Bisping is losing to Hendo, so that’s already taken care of.

I dunno. When it was first announced, I was inclined to agree with you. But after thinking about where both guys are in their careers, I think it’s more even then one might think. While Henderson is still tough as balls and capable of competing with anyone in the world on a given night, it’s also safe to say that he’s a slight bit past his prime. Bisping, conversely, is inching closer and closer to his peak. Say we see the best Bisping we’ve ever seen before come July — does Bisping at his peak beat post-peak Hendo? Maybe, maybe not. I’m reluctant to take a guess on this one. I’ve seen too many TUF guys upsetting former superstars.
Still, I can’t help but wonder if he’d do a little better to focus on the upcoming fight with Marquadt and do a little less trying to build himself up with talk through the Brazilian media.
Somehow I doubt talking himself up in interviews is cutting into his training for the Marquardt fight.

I'm just saying...
the media that the talk is happening through don’t matter in getting him a shot. Blowing through Nate would very much…

Maia is a sick grappler and in a totally different league in MMA… He made minced meat out of high caliber wrestlers (sonnen and quary) where he was able to dictate the position not them.
This is an anomaly in a BJJ fighter.
Nate is his toughest test and if Maia can beat him then he deserves the shot.

Maia is very very good
he’s on another level when it comes to BJJ but I still don’t think he can beat Nate. If he does he definitely deserves a title shot.
If Bisping defeats Hendo he also deserves a title shot. Bisping will be the first TUF winner that I would cheer on against a former PRIDE superstar.
I agree. Marquardt is the man and I would probably put money on him if I was a betting man when him and Maia scrap. Nate is the most deserving of the next shot at Silva with a win. Hendo did give him a decent fight for a round but Nate has looked better & better each time out – I don’t see the same with Hendo if he gets past Bisping.
It would be nice if UFC would bring Vitor in to the mix. He looked like The Phenom again. He put them thangs on Lindland and Martin viciously. Maia would tap Vitor probably if he don’t get KO’d first. I don’t see them fighting off jump if they get Vitor back though…
Nate showed excellent striking against Goueva and the question for Maia is two-fold:
1. How will he do against a much bigger & stronger opponent?
2. Chin; how much punishment can he absorb?
Maia has put everyone away rather quickly while not taking many (or any) shots. Maia will try to submit Marquardt; can he deal with Nate’s strength? If he does get past Nate then can he handle Silva’s strikes? Still a lot of ?’s surrounding Maia being the real deal.
Demian Maia should take over the Gatorade “G” commercials.
He’s so G it hurts.

I liek what Maia said
After his last victory Maia said he liked to show that you could win fights without hurting your opponent. I thought that was pretty cool. I do have a feeling that Nate is going to show that you can win fights by hurting your opponent as well.
"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"
Round house high kick into spinning left back fist into right hook into right low kick into left knee to the body into right knee to the head into right back hand bitch slap into left body punch into right upper cut followed by left hook KO.
"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"
I do see Maia making it thru Nate,
but I still see him having a huge problem if he gets Silva. He may in actuality be much tougher than Leites, but that does not mean he can threaten Silva any other way than Leites could. Which is the reason he still has little chance of winning.
Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.
