The Unparalleled Manny Pacquiao
Hatton gets positively stuck with one of the most brilliant punches I've ever seen by the incomparable Pacquiao:
Hatton stills comes out aggressive. Hatton standing up too straight. Manny landing with the right hook. Pac Man now backing him up again. Pac Man is extremely accurate. Pac Man still backing him up, but punching a bit wildly. A left hand flattened Hatton. The fight is over. He's flat in the center of the ring.
(Folks, keep reloading)
Hatton looks in very bad shape on the canvas. He's being attended to by officials. It was a perfect, wicked left hand from Pacquiao.
Hatton is now sitting up.
The end comes at 2:59 of round number two.
Scott Christ contextualizes the significance of Pacquiao's achievement:
Manny Pacquiao is without any question the best fighter on the planet. Floyd could knock out Marquez with one punch in July and Pacquiao is the #1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
I'm literally in awe. I don't even know what to say. This was competely amazing. Manny Pacquiao is unreal -- and he's an all-time great. He's won his fourth lineal championship and a title in six weight classes now.
Hatton had nothing for Pacquiao. Nothing. Ricky Hatton is a hell of a fighter and Manny Pacquiao made him look like a guy who didn't belong in there.
I don't know what else to say. Pacquiao just made his spot among the best ever.

For our “P4P #1” to kick ass like that. Until then, punches to the thigh it is…
Pacquiao was on fire tonight, great showing.

There’s only one Ricky Hatton!
Seriously though, I like Ricky, but Manny proved how far ahead of everyone he is right now. Absolutely brilliant stuff.
http://www.sackmikegoldberg.com
Devastating punch.
Finally, the fraud that is a Ricky Hatton has been exposed. He’s a glorified club fighter, been saying it for years, with minimal skill. It’s commendable that Hatton has made it so far, and made so much money, being as limited as he is, but the ride ends here. The money fights are gone. And I don’t ever want to see Ricky mentioned as a p4p fighter ever again. It’s insulting to the sport.
We saw a supremely talented boxer in Pacquiao dismantle an embarrassingly over-matched opponent tonight. Nothing more.
Let’s hope Pretty Boy Floyd gets past JMM this summer and we all get to enjoy a true superfight in the fall.
Who has Hatton beat? Exactly.
The man has some 40+ wins against literal club fighters in the UK, where referees allow boxers to maul each other, never breaking up clinches.
Fraud.

Malignaggi, Lazcano, Castillo, Urango, Collazo, Tszyu….uh, okay buddy.
http://www.fourouncestofreedom.com
I was waiting for this. Thank you.
Malignaggi – one armed fairy with no power
Lazcano – barely beat, some fans even believe Hatton lost that fight
Castillo – was a shell of his former self, punch drunk
Tszyu – was allowed to clinch fight to ridiculous lengths by UK referee, literally have to smack someone with a shovel in order for a referee to step in there. Queensbury rules are hardly enforced in UK.
Urango and Collazo are the career defining people want to prop up Hatton’s career with? Fail.

Hate all you want. If losing to the best guy in the world is “exposing the fraud”, you might want to do some research on what that means. Losing to a nobody does that. Losing to the best P4P guy doesn’t exactly do that.
http://www.fourouncestofreedom.com
In a vacuum, I agree. However, I go back to who has Hatton beat? One should actually have to earn the respect so many media members (especially across the pond) and delirious fans accord Hatton. Instead, Hatton just magically appeared in people’s top 10 p4p lists while ignoring the obvious: his skills are severely limited and he’s had a very cleverly managed career.
And yes, I am hating and loving every second of it. It’s so much harder for people to disagree now. =)
by a tommy point on May 3, 2009 1:41 AM EDT up reply actions
I'm sure I'm not going to convince you
But he’s literally cleaned out his weight class for the past 4 years. He’s beaten 9 former and future titlists and two guys who were top 5 pound for pound at the time he beat them (although Castillo was obviously misplaced being that high), and none of the fights were particularly close. His only two losses are to the then-reigning #1 pound for pound fighter in the world. Yes, he fought in a relatively weak weight class outside of Tszyu, but he pretty much did all he could in the weight class. Remembering that the standards for the IBHOF are very weak, I consider him a borderline hall of famer.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
And by the way
We don’t bite at badlefthook. If you want to hate on boxers, you can do it on the boxing blog too.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Really, the only boxer I have this angst for is Hatton. He’s an unskilled club fighter who has gotten so much more out of his limited skills than he had any right to — for which I commend him. Just don’t equate that with being a HoF or p4p fighter.
There’s a serious void in skill. I know. Floyd Sr. knew it before, and after, the fight. The same for Roger. Hell, any clear thinking student of the sport should have come to this conclusion, but so many have been sucked in by the ever-present UK hype machine since Hatton allegedly took that “next step” in his career.
Hatton’s manager is the one who belongs in the HoF for somehow getting him to this point.
Perhaps I will stop by BLH more often. And not with the intention of hating on boxers, unless the subject is Hatton and people are bringing teh crazy.

Well...
the important thing to remember is that Hatton wasn’t exactly rated amazingly high in everyone’s mind. He was at the low end of the top 10 P4P which I’d say was deserved

That’s true. He was generally at the bottom fo the top 10. Though, Yahoo somehow managed to have him at number five or six once.
I guess what I’m saying is that I don’t think he belonged in the top 20. He never should have sniffed the top 10. Brilliant marketing, I suppose.

I think he earned his spot...
I mean…it’s not like he ducked anyone or anything. His style is ugly at times and he is a mugger. But I’d say that he earned the #8(ish) spot heading in to last night. Still…he got mowed through.
Different perspectives I suppose.

A real perspective
Tommy Point (above) declares that Hatton is ‘a glorified club fighter, been saying it for years, with minimal skill.’
Well, tell that to Kosta Tszyu and the other 36 guys that Hatton has TKO’d in a 45-2 record. It is a schoolboyish outlook to disrespect Hatton’s immense fighting spirit and skill…undermining the huge abilities of the two men to beat him…Pacquaio and Mayweather…and all the other tough bastards he faced.
Hatton had the balls to face everyone to find out if he was the best. He’s a man. The man is the guy having a go in the ring, win or lose…not the mouthpiece who sounds like he has never had a full on fight in his life.
Grow up…it is no disgrace to fall to a blinding punch from the likes of Pacquaio or Mayweather. It is a disgrace to bad mouth any big hearted fighter who puts his head on the block.
Lunging jab, clinch, body punch, referee steps in. Rinse and repeat for as long as a Hatton fight goes. That is the extent of his ability, literally. There is no ‘immense’ skill. Heart? Sure, but that only gets you so far. Anyone who has seen more than one Hatton fight should know this to be the case. Oh, but we were all told that was simply “in-fighting”. That was a lie. A bad one. A promotion trick.
Kostya Tszyu (at least spell his name right), was at the end of the line and had stepped into a perfect storm for a Hatton victory. The most important factor was that the fight was in the UK, where the referees couldn’t care less about enforcing the rules of boxing. Hatton was rarely made to stop holding and clinching. The entire fight was an absurd hug-fest, with Hatton leaning on Tszyu to tire him out while landing the odd body punch. And it worked. It was Club Fighting 101.
It’s not a disgrace to lose to the two best boxers in the sport. What I claim is a disgrace is that so many people thought Hatton even belonged in the same ring with them in the first place. Where’s the skill?

That looks to be what they were doing. Good link.
However, read the spinal or neck injuries section at the bottom. Not really supposed to move them if that’s what one is looking for. And, I would think that would be precisely the main concern after that kind of knockout.

Good point. I think whiplash might be the most common neck injury, based on the way the heads snap during KOs.

Ho-Lee Shit
I was watching this at Nevada Smith’s in NYC. There’s a huge population of British regulars there, but the crowd was surprisingly split. It was also incredibly quiet after the KO. Everybody was stunned, no matter who they were rooting for. I actually had to shepherd my English friend back to my apartment and show him the Mosley/Margarito fight to take his mind off the brutal beating.
Pacquiao is just fucking stunning. SC is dead right to call him an “all-time great.” I just wonder who he can fight next. I know JMM would love another shot, but he’d have to beat Mayweatther somehow first. I’d love to see Pac/Mayweather, but I genuinely don’t think Floyd will take that fight. So who’s next for Pac? Does he have to move permanently to 147 now to get a fight?
Freddie Roach said that if PBF would agree to a 50/50 split, the fight would be on in a heartbeat (provided Floyd gets past JMM).
I think Floyd decided to take the JMM fight to up his bargaining power in potential Pacquiao negotiations. Not to mention he hates Bob Arum like poison. Still, a silly move that could end up costing Floyd millions.
Pacquiao is my favorite fighter, but there’s no way I could pick him over Floyd. We saw how much trouble a more-than-competent counter-puncher in JMM could give Pacman. Imagine the best counter-puncher of this generation? Don’t see that ending well for the Pacman.

It’s interesting. I felt like the hype with the 24/7 show and all the hype from the British fans was making Hatton seem like he was invincible in this fight. Even analysts were pushing for a Hatton late-round surge. I never saw it like that.
All I saw when this fight was announced was hand speed. Pacquaio has blazing hand speed, and I didn’t see Hatton keeping up at all. I gave Hatton 4 rounds tops. He didn’t even last that. But the hand speed added with his intelligence is a thing of beauty.
Hatton flnched to wind up his overhand left, and Pacquaio instantly reacted with a short right, downing Hatton. The speed and intelligence was amazing.

This was the second boxing match I have watched since the first Jermain Taylor vs Bernard Hopkins fight.
The first was the Taylor vs. Froch fight mentioned here on BE. I wouldn’t say I am the biggest boxing fan but are there any other fights I should watch like this?
Oh and while this fight was awesome I must say the undercard kinda sucked.
Some great fights from the last couple years:
Vazquez-Marquez trilogy
Pacquiao-Marquez II
Marquez-Diaz
Cotto-Margarito
Pavlik-Taylor I
I’m leaving a lot of stuff out.
And the undercard definitely sucked.
Fucking cheater…
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
Margarito didn’t get half the shit GSP got, and it’s a shame.
by Derek Suboticki on May 3, 2009 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions
He will likely never fight in the US, and yeah… he isn’t going to make millions of dollars fighting cans in Tijuana. No one will fight a cheater like him. He broke a a rule that is unspoken among fighters.
If you cheat in baseball, you get more homeruns, you cheat in track, you run faster, you cheat in boxing… you significantly increase the chance of maming someone.
There isn’t a place for him in the sport…
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
Obviously the fight is now tainted
But Cotto’s performance was pretty incredible and Margarito’s ability to take shots and come back strong was amazing too. Take into account the likely fact that Margarito’s gloves were loaded and Cotto’s work in the ring becomes almost heroic.
and the under-card was pure garbage. Guy named James Kirkland was scheduled to be on it. Absolutely electric KO artist, huge puncher…but he got arrested last week for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
While already on probation no less.
It’s a shame. He was a thrill to watch.

The Taylor/Hopkins isn’t exactly the most eye candy fight because Hopkins can make it ugly and Taylor fades late in fights….
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
It wasn't iirc.
But it was the last boxing fight I saw until recently.
Floyd Sr. says Hatton should retire:
“I would suggest he retire. At the end of the day, it’s his decision,” Mayweather Sr. said. “He tried twice. He failed twice. He lost to my son and to lose to someone below that, it’s time to leave the ring. He made a good profit. Sometimes you have to go when your prime is still there.”
So does Carl Froch:
“I have to say, if I was in his position after last night’s performance, I would definitely retire,” Froch said. “But I can’t speak for another fighter. He will decide what he’s going to do.”

Exactly...
On 24/7 you could see Manny and Freddy drilling the right hook-straight left-right hook and then slip under the return shot and pivot. Floyd talked crap about it but really with Manny’s speed there wasn’t going to be a lot Ricky could do when Manny got into range to fire off the combo.
Manny was in position to fire another shot if Ricky didn’t go down.
I think it's clear...
that you can’t prepare for someone at Manny’s size with his speed and power. You can drill all you want but his gifts are so rare that you can’t duplicate it in the gym.

right. No trainer in the world could have prepared Hatton for that. The combination of speed, power, plus a game-plan to make Hatton pay for his lazy left hooks. There was nothing that could be done. I just didn’t think Pac could hit THAT hard.
In large part I attributed DLH quitting on his stool to age and a general lack of passion to fight from behind. In retrospect I think he knew he was gonna get KTFO if he tried to get to the cards, even while doing the ‘DLH turtle’ against the ropes.
And Floyd's (Sr.) brother
“If you can’t beat a man like that… Pshhh you should just give up boxing.” referring to Manny. That was a bit overboard.
