Rumor: Josh Koscheck Possible At UFC 103 vs. Matt Hughes or Frank Trigg
According to MMAMania's Jesse Holland, Josh Koscheck (12-4) is in talks with the UFC regarding a UFC 103 matchup with newly-signed Frank Trigg:
Top-ranked welterweight contender, Josh Koscheck (12-4), and former number one division contender, Frank Trigg (19-6), are in talks to battle it out for 170-pound supremacy at UFC 103 on Sept. 26.
MMAmania.com learned earlier today about the likely match up; however, a venue is still unknown at this time (locations in the United Kingdom and Las Vegas are under under consideration) for the event. In addition, nine-time division kingpin, Matt Hughes, is also lurking in the shadows as a possible opponent for Koscheck … albeit on the outside.
This is a bout that will once again test Koscheck's ability to stuff takedowns, and it'll likely result in Koscheck looking for a spectacular KO against a veteran like Trigg. Trigg has some powerful hands as well, but my gut tells me we could see Koscheck reverting back to his roots if he's watched some of the big fights that Trigg has had in the past.
Most notably, both Hughes and St. Pierre took advantage of their wrestling base to defeat Trigg on the ground. A lot of fans like to throw comments out regarding Trigg being unable to stop the rear naked choke, and it'd probably be beneficial for Koscheck to look at implementing that type of gameplan. As we all know from Koscheck's most recent bouts, he's more likely to throw caution into the wind for the exciting win than brutalizing opponents with his wrestling in dominating but non-finishing performances.
Also a possibility, Matt Hughes could potentially be put into a spot to face Josh Koscheck as well at UFC 103, but there is no confirmation from the UFC regarding which fighter will be pitted against the former NCAA wrestling champion.

1. He was dominating both Fickett and Thiago and got caught being careless. I would confidently bet on him in a rematch with either opponent.
2. GSP tricked him into training only for striking, then wrestled him for the whole fight
3. He took the Alves fight on like 4 days notice, and Alves is not the kind of guy you can fight w/o training
You are just being a hater. Kos is a sick fighter

Don't get me wrong, Kos is a good fighter.
1) But the whole “Just got caught” business is just stupid.
Fickett isn’t the kind of guy you get complacent on the ground with, and that’s exactly what Kos did. Drew is great at taking people’s backs, and he did exactly that to Kos; served him right for playing with fire.
As for Paulo Thiago, Koscheck was implementing a pretty sound game plan, but he was being far too agressive in doing so, which led to sloppiness. Thiago caught Kos with his hands at his waist, and hit him with a clean punching combo; yet again, another brain fart courtesy of Josh.
2) How exactly did GSP “trick” Koscheck into training only standup? It’s MMA, and it’s not like the fact that GSP has outstanding wrestling is any kind of secret. Sure, he has good standup, but Kos was simply overconfident going into the GSP fight; he even said himself that it didn’t even occur to him that GSP could potentially outwrestle him.
3) First off, Kos is a badass just for taking a fight with a guy like Alves on short notice like he did. However, he took the fight over 2 weeks in advance to the fight time, and had even said that he was in the gym, and in great shape. Also keep in mind that Thiago was training for a completely different opponent as well.
I’m not being a hater by any means, in fact I really like Koscheck, and think he has a ton of potential, but sometimes he can be his own worst enemy.

Koscheck
ought to be able to batter either Hughes or Trigg. They’re both tough but he’s the younger, faster, stronger version of them, with better standup.

Man, this is like bringing back Bob Backlund to get a new guy over. Koscheck beats Trigg. Koscheck against Hughes would really let us know if Hughes is still capable of hanging around the top.

Actually, no. Kos is now a well rounded fighter.
It was more towards Trigg and Hughes.

yeah, one is a loss away from possibly getting cut and the other is a dominant champion in his weight class.
by nigelzackit on May 30, 2009 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Really?
Do you honestly believe that they UFC would cut Koscheck with one more loss? He’s 10-4 in the UFC, and as mentioned above 2 of those 4 are to GSP and Alves. Saying that he’s one loss away from possibly being cut is just hyperbole.
by Estrada on May 30, 2009 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
What he said.
There’s no way he’s getting cut if he loses again, unless he somehow pulls a Kaleb Starnes.
I will say that if he doesn’t string together a couple of wins, then he seriously runs the risk of being relegated to undercard, gatekeeper status.

if he loses to trigg, its a very real possibility. dont lie to yourself. losing to a nobody and then a guy who everyone seems to think is a career stepping stool probably gets him a pink slip or a big pay cut.

Condit vs Trigg would also be good.

they could pump it up as a rematch. of course, any fight that trigg is in will be pretty easy to hype. if trigg wins, he beat a wec champ, if carlos wins he will be supper popular.
just talkin out my ass here. don’t feel like researching how they style up stylistically just saying it would be a fun story

Kos will destroy these two. However, he seems to be in love with his stand-up, and he has been a bit stubborn in the past, so there’s a chance he can get caught again.

Can anyone explain this Trigg thing to me?
Was there a big groundswell of support for him or something? I could easily go the rest of my life without ever seeing him fight again, and now he’s 37. There’s any number of more talented fighters with more upside who are younger who could be in that spot.
I could go the rest of my life never seeing Trigg fight again and not feel the loss.

I dunno
they’re mounting ALOT of fights and need the bodies.
But I also wonder if they’re not feeling a little pressure from Strikeforce.
If they sign Trigg, he’s a known fighter they can easily build fights around — Trigg can headline a UFN, immediately be in a solid main card fight, and with one or two wins be in a featured fight on a big card.
If they let Strikeforce get Trigg, that instantly gives Jake Shields a credible opponent. If Coker had signed Trigg and signed or borrowed Jay Hieron, that’s a division.

i want to see him fight a striker
i’m watching the next kos fight closely. ideally, he will become a smart multidimensional fighter by:
1) using his great wrestling to determine where the fight goes at all times. this is a huge advantage b/c one doesn’t get stuck in a losing position.
2) using his striking predominately to to set up strong take downs and, of course, for aggressive GnP.
3) using his great wrestling to get into dominant ground positions to set up the aggressive GnP.
4) using the mere threat of a takedown to deter opponents from kicking and to make them tentative.
he definitely has the skills to do all this, to fight smart, but will he? or will he “pull a sherk” on us and “stubbornly engage in a standup battle that he is losing?”
by fuzzy wuzzy on May 29, 2009 10:38 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
That's how I feel, as well
He also needs to decide when to use his wresting for takedowns, and when to use it in reverse.
He just got caught being too agressive and sloppy against Paulo Thiago, though

why no respect for Trigg?
I think he has a great chance to win in UFC, I don’t think he is the future champ, but i think he has a fighting chance to beat most WW in UFC.

Trigg's a good fighter.
It’s just that he’s never been spectacular. He’s the classic example of a guy who is well rounded, and good at everything, but not GREAT at anything. He can and has been outwrestled, outstruck, and outgrappled. He’ll always just be a B+/ A- level fighter, who will have his moments where he’s in the top 10, but he’ll never hold the belt, or really ever beat a top 5 guy.
He knows the fight game though, and I for one don’t mind his commentating all that much. He’s also been in some exciting fights (most of which he’s lost, unfortunately).

Koscheck would do mean things to Hughes. Koscheck could afford to do that mistake he did against Thiago as many times as he likes in that fight because I doubt Hughes can take him down.

I actually like Trigg in this fight, Kos has become way too in love his his striking and it’s not that good for him to abandone his bread and butter. Trigg on the other hand will do what he does best look for takedowns and GNP, he should edge out the decision fighting at WW again is the right move for his career imo.
