Quote of the Day: Brett Rogers

Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.

"I was hoping someone would bring that up. I thought I was fighting Overeem, but I got Arlovski about three weeks ago. It’s cool because, the way I see it, it’s actually going to be a better fight than the one with Overeem would have been. With Overeem, we might have ended up on the ground and did all that up-and-down stuff. With Arlovski, he likes to stand and bang and I like to do that too. This is going to make for a better fight.

I was putting in some time for Overeem. Then Overeem wanted to act like a fool. He’s a pro fighter and he wanted to act like a fool. That’s on him. I’m moving onto bigger and better. I’m getting this fight. I’ll knock Arlovski out and hopefully move on to somebody better. I’m trying to get into that top-10 ranking. This isn’t going to be forever so I need to make my move like right now when I’m healthy."

-- Brett Rogers talks about Overeem's bar brawl at yesterday’s Strikeforce conference call.

Heh, to be perfectly honest, Overeem at 255 of pure muscle probably would have curbstomped Brett Rogers.

It wouldn’t have been pretty, and I don’t see the Arlovski bout going much prettier…unless he can land some shots, but Arlovski’s technical skills are too good for Rogers brawling skills, in my opinion.

I think Rogers is going to have a hard time if Arlovski shows up with the same speed he had against Fedor.

My thoughts exactly.

Rogers is heading for a dramatic

step up in competition, whether its Arlovski or Rogers.
Too bad for Strikeforce that EliteXC “protected” Kimbo so well.
Rogers would have stomped a mudhole in that ass and he’d be big time now.

Too true!

And he’s good on the mike.

Damn right. Rogers could’ve had that big win instead of Seth Petruzelli.

Arlovski is a HUGE step up for Rogers. I feel that Rogers should definitely get a step up in competition, but I feel that Rogers should be fighting a Jeff Monson, Roy Nelson, or Antoni Hardonk level fighter in that they are not top ten Heavyweights but solid/game opponents. If Rogers wins, then great for him, but if he loses, I wouldn’t really see any questions answered as far as Rogers position in the Heavyweight division is concerned.

...People are sleeping on Brett in this fight.

Look..he’s probably going to lose the fight. But Arlovski’s biggest liability (chin) is Rogers’ biggest strength (power). With Rothwell and Nelson there wasn’t nearly the threat present to Arlovski that there is with Brett.

The difference is clearly going to be speed. I always thought Rogers speed was a little underrated for being a big power guy, but he looked really slow and plodding against Humphery and that will probably be his undoing. But he has for real power and if he clips Arlovski on the chin he’ll shut him down.

As a rule of thumb, I don’t generally get all that underdog happy when fighter x has a weak chin and fighter y has a lot of power, especially if fighter x also has much more technical striking, is faster, and has better cardio (as in the case of Arlovski/Rogers). Now when fighter y is the one with the more technical striking, speed, and/or cardio (as in the case of Frankling/Wanderlei; though now that I say that, I think Franklin is the favorite), I change my tune.

I don't know man...

Rogers is a big guy with real power…. It’s a situation where Arlovski could seriously lose due to ONE mistake… He isn’t necessarily that hard to hit… and although Rogers didn’t look outstanding last fight his rhythm was interrupted numerous times due to the fact that Humphries’ dreads kept getting caught in his hands… To me he seemed to be trying out the muy thai part of his game… I think he’ll be less experimental, and just throw hands against Andrei.

As long as he sticks to his boxing, he’ll be very hard for Rogers to hit.

Man I can’t wait until Rogers fights someone who is a blackbelt in Up and Down stuff.

It sounds like Rogers is pushing for a fight with Gilbert Yvel :D

When it comes to heavies, I think it’s too hard to gauge their potential til they face a top guy. I like Rogers a lot & think he has a good shot in this fight. Arlovski sure did dance a lot against Fedor but he wasn’t exactly lighting him up w/those dance moves. Rogers seems like an intelligent guy. I don’t know who he trains with but I hope he surrounds himself w/good, experienced guys.

We’re splitting hairs here with Overeem and Arlovski.

Rogers would get destroyed by Paul freakin Buentello.

by George Lucas on May 28, 2009 1:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Word. Rogers has great potential but I think Strikeforce are making a mistake. There’s dozens of journeymen Hws who would love the publicity of fighting on tv, and could help round out Rogers’ skills. Arlovski will annihilate him. I feel bad for him about what Arlovski will do to him, but at the same time he can have comfort knowing Overeem would probably have put an even worse beating on him

Arlovski has no chin but great technique, Rogers has power but no technique…

This equals = Dont bet on this fight.

by mmalogic on May 28, 2009 2:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He has no chin because Fedor threw an gigantic atom bomb at his chin while he flew into it? Or because Sylvia knocked him down and there was an early stoppage? This isn’t Chuck we’re talking about here. Arlovski has only been KO’d once. That’s not enough for him to warrant a glass jaw label IMO.

How many people has Tim Sylvia damaged to the point that the ref stopped the fight?

by subo on May 28, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Off the top of my head? Ricco, Gan McGee, Cabbage (I think), Wes Sims, Tra Telligman, and a few others. The crappy decisions machine Sylvia didn’t show up until AFTER he won the belt back from Arlovski.

Thank you, and I personally found the Nog fight to be entertaining as hell, and this was during the “decision era” for Sylvia.

by kyfm621 on May 28, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I liked that one too. I think Sylvia was one of those guys who suffered from “Championitis”, when defending the belt at all costs becomes the primary goal, so the fighter tries to simply minimize risks to the point of inactivity. It would be consistent with some of the glimpses of his personality that we’ve seen that suggests that Sylvia is one of those “looking for approval” guys at heart. BUT I think he can be a more exciting fighter than he has been recently (Nog fight aside), but he’s better when he can be an underdog bully. (He was the underdog against Fedor, but no one bullies the Last Emperor.)

Good list. I was a long time Sylvia defender, but I think Arlovski’s 1-2 record against him says more about Andrei’s limitations than Tim’s strengths.

by subo on May 29, 2009 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s true; Arlovski showed no ability to figure Sylvia out in the 2nd and 3rd fights.

I like Brett and it would be cool if he pulled off the upset but man there’s a lot of hype for a guy who’s biggest fight so far was James Thompson. He’s going from the side show to fighting a former world champion that’s a whole different world of competition.

Does AA have hair for Rogers to pull?

by soadtrails on May 28, 2009 5:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If not, he’d better start growing that shit out. Humphrey’s best defense against Rogers was to throw his dreads at him and then sit and yell when Rogers brushed them. Idiot shoulda cut his hair.

by inadvertentgroinstrike on May 29, 2009 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

haha

That’s what I was sitting and thinking the whole time too

by soadtrails on May 29, 2009 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just want to know what happened if Rogers just hammers AA into a pulp? Will Rogers be #2 HW in the world now cause AA was in the ring with Fedor? AA was the #2 HW leading up to his fight with Fedor.

I think Arlovski kills him but shit does happen. Rogers hits like a train, moves like a train, and has shit for cardio. It will be an exciting 1.5 minutes.

I think most intelligent fans know that a highly ranked fighter can be beaten by a lower ranked fighter and it doesn’t necessarily mean that the lower ranked fighter is “better” in terms of an overall ranking. Some guys are just disasterous style matchups, some guys get lucky, and even the best guys can and do still make mistakes.

I think Leland hit the nail on the head (I think it was Leland…) when he noted that guys fighting Fedor these days get “pulled upwards” in the rankings. Arlovski probably was a stretch to rate at #2, and since he got splatted by Fedor, we really don’t know how much of a stretch it was. But either way, no one would even give Rogers a chance against Fedor, wheres some optimists actually thought Arlovski could beat him. So if Rogers were to win, he’d deservedly rise a few spots, Arlovski was deservedly fall a few spots, and while they’d end up closer in the rankings, Arlovski would still deservedly be ranked higher.

I’m not sold on Brett Rogers. He’s big and he hits hard. Those two things don’t make a complete MMA fighter. He’s never really been tested. His conditoning is suspect. Arlovski probably isn’t the guy who will expose Rogers’ weaknesses. If AA does not get suckered into a street fight, he should win by decision. A win over Arlovski may open some eyes, but Brett Rogers is not going to be the next big thing in the heavyweight division. People are trying to hype him, but I just don’t see it.
