USAT/SBN May 2009 MMA Consensus Rankings

Rankings-button_medium_medium_medium

The May USA TODAY/Sports Blog Nation MMA Consensus Rankings are now live. Be sure and pick up a hard copy of USA TODAY tomorrow to see them in print.

Based on the premise that all MMA rankings are subjective but that it’s still useful and informative to know who the online MMA community as a whole ranks as the best fighters in MMA, we collect and average the rankings of the top MMA websites to produce our consensus rankings. We compile the top MMA rankings from each of our sources and award 25 points for a first place ranking, 16 for a 10th place ranking, 1 for a 25th place ranking. A formula is used to “normalize” the data so all fighters are awarded points from those lists that do not include a full 25 fighters. This formula ensures that each ranking site awards the same number of total points regardless of how many fighters they choose to rank. Each fighter’s total is divided by the number of possible points to determine their standing in the Consensus Rankings.

Time for our monthly rankings fight. I’ll start things off:

Why in the world is Josh Barnett #2? He hasn’t beat any top 10’s in like forever!

Keep firing Assholes!

This is a dream competition for me. I drink as much coffee as I want, and eventually I hallucinate.

I'm a huge Barnett fan

but I’m so sick of hearing about this that I cannot wait for Fedor to pulp his face and put me out of my misery.
No matter what Lesnar or Mir will be #2 in September I guarantee it.

Sean Sherk is the #2 lightweight in the wo… oh, wait.

Wasn’t this your argument? Sherk doesn’t even have the power to drop Aoki in his T-Rex arms.

I’m pretty confident he’d still beat Aoki.

Same, but he’s not #2.

Not even close.

I have no clue how Liddell falls to 11 but Wanderlei somehow remains in the top 10.

Its a miracle of the concensus rankings. One does not question the concensus rankings.

lol

the consensus rankings are just as smart and no smarter than the most dedicated MMA fans.
I think the fact that Wanderlei is moving down to the middleweight division and is much younger than Chuck is the difference in the minds of the rankers.
The chorus of calls for Chuck to retire was definitely heard loud and clear by many of the rankers.

Since school’s out, I can’t get my free copy of USAT anymore. I’m curious who didn’t put Machida as #1- without Richard’s charts, I’m lost. What happened to him?

Richard's around

we were under the gun to put these together post haste after the UFC. Richard will do the charts when he gets a chance.
Most of the people who still have Rashad at #1 just haven’t updated yet.
We had to special request updates from many sites because of the merciless timing of the USA Today calendar.
In the old days, we’d have waited until next week.

Sorry about the lack of charts, guys. I had too much else on my plate in the real world. Hopefully I can get the charts done tomorrow after I get home from work.

Not a problem, I just hadn’t seen you on the boards for a while.
