DREAM.9 in Pictures
Before the show, Kazushi Sakuraba, Hayato "Mach" Sakurai and Shinya Aoki held a public demonstration and autograph session with DEEP boss Shigeru Saeki. (photo: DREAM Official)
The action began without warning or the standard fighter intro ceremony, and Ikuhisa Minowa started the evening off in exciting fashion, submitting Bob Sapp in under 90 seconds for the right to rep puroresu in the Super Hulk bracket. (photo: DREAM Official)
After walking to the ring with a bat slung over his shoulder, Jose Canseco was predictably knocked out of the park by Korean giant Hong Man Choi. After the fight, Canseco cited an existing knee injury as partial reason for the loss and said that he was unsure if he would compete in mixed martial arts again. (photo: Sportsnavi)
Sokoudjou incited a minor brawl between his corner and that of Jan "The Giant" Nortje when he refused to relent his pounding of the grounded South African kickboxer even after the referee dove between the two in order to stop the bout. (photos: Sportsnavi)
Super Hulk favorite Gegard Mousasi also made quick work of his opponent, and extra-rotund Mark Hunt, before revealing that he'll be fighting Vitor Belfort at the next Affliction show. (photo: Sportsnavi)
Tatsuya Kawajiri outworked top ATT lightweight "JZ" Cavalcante for two rounds, ostensibly earning "Crusher" the right to face the winner of the Aoki-Hansen III title match in July. However we'd soon learn that Aoki will have a different opponent. (photos: Kamipro, Sportsnavi)
Katsunori Kikuno, Aoki and "Mach announced their intentions for DREAM.10 during intermission. (photo: DREAM Official)
Featherweight Grand Prix quarterfinalists Abel Cullum and Hideo Tokoro put on a Fight of the Year caliber scrap, until Tokoro submitted Cullum 1:38 into the second frame. If you can't get with this fight, I'd say MMA is not the sport for you. (photos: Kamipro, Sportsnavi)
With 20 seconds left in the 10-minute first round, "Evil Fist" Hiroyuki Takaya put away Yoshiro Maeda to advance to the FWGP semis. (photos: Kamipro, DREAM Official)
In the most frustrating bout of the evening, Bibiano Fernandes attempted to fight Masakazu Imanari, who may have been inhabited by the spirit of Nick Serra as he repeatedly flopped to guard and butt scooted in an attempt to goad the BJJ whiz to the mat for a leglock attempt. (photo: Sportsnavi)
Greco-Roman champion Joe Warren upset the FEG applecart by shocking fans and critics alike, earning a split decision over "Kid" Yamamoto in what has to be considered one of the greatest upsets in MMA history. (photo: Sportsnavi)
However the night ended in unfortunate fashion, as an illegal (though ruled accidental) Jason "Mayhem" Miller soccer kick opened a gash on the head of Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, resulting in a medical stoppage and a ruling of no contest despite the protests of both men. I’ll be rooting for Warren as the sole American finalist in the featherweight grand prix and as the massive underdog, but it would definitely be easier, or at least more fruitful, to root for the home team if I were Brazilian or Japanese!

Me too, but also partially because I have money on him. I put down $10 to beat Kid and $10 to win the whole thing.

So a knee injury was why Canseco lost. I can’t wait for him to heal up so we can have Choi Vs Canseco II.
Keep firing Assholes!
This is a dream competition for me. I drink as much coffee as I want, and eventually I hallucinate.

Fuck that. I need Canseco/Nortje for the alternate spot now.

Canseco may be done with MMA, but apparently he already managed to pick up some things from the traditional excuses for losing…
