UFC 98 Salaries

Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.

Iconphotostwo027508-20071229-mkh-b9_lyoto_machida_medium Sherdog received the disclosed salary information for last weekend's UFC 98 from the NSAC, and it pans out as follows:

Lyoto Machida -- $200,000 (including $70,000 win bonus, $60,000 knockout bonus) def. Rashad Evans -- $200,000

Matt Hughes -- $260,000 (including $100,000 win bonus, $60,000 fight of night bonus) def. Matt Serra -- $135,000 (including $60,000 fight of night bonus)

Drew McFedries -- $34,000 (including $17,000 win bonus) def. Xavier Foupa-Pokam -- $6,000

Chael Sonnen -- $50,000 (including $25,000 win bonus) def. Dan Miller -- $15,000

Frankie Edgar -- $40,000 (including $20,000 win bonus) def. Sean Sherk -- $40,000

Brock Larson -- $102,000 (including $21,000 win bonus, $60,000 submission bonus) def. Mike Pyle -- $15,000

Tim Hague -- $10,000 (including $5,000 win bonus) def. Patrick Barry -- $7,000

Kyle Bradley -- $8,000 (including $5,000 win bonus) def. Phillipe Nover -- $10,000

Krzysztof Soszynski -- $16,000 (including $8,000 win bonus) def. Andre Gusmao -- $5,000

Yoshiyuki Yoshida -- $16,000 (including $8,000 win bonus) def. Brandon Wolff -- $3,000

George Roop -- $16,000 (including $8,000 win bonus) def. David Kaplan -- $8,000

A few thoughts:

Brock Larson has to be pretty pleased with himself, having gone from an uncertain future after the dissolution of the WEC's heavier weight classes, to now pocketing over $100K in one night and getting his fight shown on the PPV as well.

Matt Serra and Dan Miller both got laid-upon for 3 rounds, but Miller took significantly more abuse and only roped in $15,000 for his efforts, while Serra managed to tack on a $60,000 fight-of-the-night bonus to his $70,000 base salary.

Interestingly enough, Serra and Lyoto Machida had the same $70,000 base salary, but it seems likely that the Brazilian will be commanding a steeper price in his first title defense.

Rashad's base pay is twice that of Hughes?  That's a bit of a surprise.

Drew McFedries also did pretty well for himself, earning himself a $17,000 base salary and twice that in total for his TKO win over Professor X...not bad considering that he would have likely been out of the UFC if he lost.

Andre Gusmao can't be happy with himself...not only did he move to 0-2 in the UFC while on the receiving end of a Krysztof Soszynski KO, but he also made less than Dave "I can't be knocked out" Kaplan of all people.

The Rashad/Hughes thing is not that weird if you think about it.

Hughes was on the end of a (probably) pretty old contract. While Rashad’s contract is probably newer. The bigger stars will get more money when their contracts are up and they re-sign, that’s the way it goes.

Yeah

Can’t take these things on a card-by-card basis when guys are operating on multi-fight contracts.

I poop rainbows.

Hughes gets most of his pay in the form of unreported bonuses.

by ufc4 on May 26, 2009 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

And yes, Rashad just signed a new contract about a month or so ago.

by ufc4 on May 26, 2009 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

The other aspect of these things that makes 97% of the whining about salaries on the internet pointless.

by Phildo on May 26, 2009 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. Guys like Lesnar get a reported base salary of $250,000 but with their PPV percentage they can end up making $2 million or more a fight, and that doesn’t even count sponsorships. I believe I read somewhere that Hughes got a $1 million bonus for the Gracie fight, and I know he got something similar when he stepped into the main event at UFC 85 on short notice.

I wonder how much he got from Jack’s Link’s

by bigweeze on May 26, 2009 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I would be willing to bet that Hughes has a PPV cut, I wouldn’t think that Rashad does.

by who me on May 26, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t believe either of them does. I discussed this with Michael Rome a while back and the guys known to have a cut are: Lesnar, GSP, Couture, Anderson Silva, Penn, and Liddell. Forrest Griffin, Rampage, and Wanderlei Silva might, they aren’t for sure.

Hughes has been a pretty big player for awhile in the UFC (although not as much recently), if he doesn’t have one then I would think it was just because he had a very old/long contract.. Of course he might just be getting checks from Dana in the back, he has said numerous times he makes more money that is on the payout releases.

by who me on May 26, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Hughes does indeed get a cut of the ppv.

I think Rashad now does as well, as he signed a new deal.

Hughes does for sure.

by Lynchman on May 26, 2009 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Rampage also does. His WFA contract had it and he signed a new deal that also contained it.

Speaking of payouts, I made 20,000+ mmaplayground bucks thanks largely to Takaya.

Two can play at that game. I made ~650 000 mmaplayground bucks thanks largely to a Takaya/Fernandes/Kawajiri parlay. :)

You had a Takaya/Fernandes/Kawajiri parlay? You have brass ones, sir.

TUF is turning out good for the losers. They get a shot and a higher base to start. Roop, Kaplan and Soszynski fighting for 8 and 8. Nover getting a bump likely due to being in the final. While Hague, Barry, Bradley, Gusmao, Wolff, and even Prof X making the it the hard way and bringing home less in base pay.

by szucconi on May 26, 2009 3:25 PM EDT reply actions

Wolff got fired a long time ago. Now they just put a really realistic Wolff shaped grappling dummy in the cage and tell the other guy that he can do whatever he wants as long as he keeps is pants on.

In addition to his base, win bonus and FotN bonus...Hughes was given this commemorative shirt

Just can’t beat those undisclosed locker room bonuses

Matt Hughes has a unlimited country breakfast clause in his contract, they pay him in sausage patties.

by who me on May 26, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Other bonuses...

Chael Sonnen was given a Snuggie for his blanket work.

Matt Hughes was awarded a pair of left handed scissors for his new southpaw stance.

Sean Sherk was awarded a free week of game plan lessons from Jose Canseco.

If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.

I would not let McFedries punch me in the head for $6K. Not a chance.

The question is, how much do you value your childhood memories?

I’m going to have to think about that one. I’m sure someone will pay me to paint ‘Condom Depot’ on my corpse.
