Did Edgar trick Sherk?

Sherk vs Edgar was a huge fight. For Sherk that is. My guess is that the whole point of that fight was to cement Sherk as a contender. And what better way to do that than to put Sherk up against a smaller version of himself? There was even an upside to Edgar loosing. A loss would almost certainly have forced Edgar down to featherweight where he would be an immediate contender.

To be able to move Edgar to WEC he would have to loose... and it`s much better to send him off with a loss to the no 1 LW-contender  than to Gray Maynard.

But things went wrong... and Edgar won. Or depending how you look at it, Sherk lost.

So far almost everything I`ve seen concerning the fight is focused on Sherk`s idiotic gameplan, or maybe on his non-existing boxing. What I would like to point out that in a way he may have been tricked into that gameplan.

There`s no doubt that Sherk was planning to box, but had he really planned to completely abandon his boxing?

I was kinda surprised when I first saw Edgar threaten with a takedown-attempt. After a couple of them I was more and more impressed. I think that Edgar never really intended to take Sherk down. He used TD-attempts to indicate to Sherk that "Hey man, I can`t box with you Mr T-Rex! I have to take this fight to the ground!" Thus installing a false sense of security into Sherk. I`m guessing that Edgar may have gameplanned on winning by unanimous decision 29-28.

When Sherk finally realised that he was actually loosing the stand-up, it was already to late. And since Sherk`s ground`n pound doesn`t finish fighters off, taking it to the ground wasn´t really an option in the third round, he had to hope for a very unlikely KO. Even if Edgar hadn`t put Sherk in a guillotine at the end, he would still have won the fight.

after round 1

sherk and his corner should have known that he was getting beat on the feet, and wrestling should have instantly been the play to make. sherk tricked himself.

Edgar was simply the better fighter. He has better wrestling credentials, even though he’ s physically smaller than Sherk. On the feet, Edgar was quicker, had the reach advantage, and had much better diversity of strikes and head movement. Seeing Edgar beat Sherk just like Penn did puts a different outlook on BJ’s last fight at LW.

Little news bit for everyone

Didn’t want to fanpost this without a source, and I find the news a bit dubious— but that being said.. a local fighter from my gym, who is friends with Sherk and has trained with him in the past, had a chat with my brother yesterday afternoon and said that Sherk hasn’t been shooting in his last three fights because his knees have gone bad. Again, I find the suggestion curious and/or speculative, but he apparently said it as though it was a fact. I retorted to my brother that anyone that’s seen Sherk sprawling on his API training videos would cock an eyebrow at that suggestion.

Interesting. Thanks for the info.

Would surgery help? Cause if medical technology can fix it, I’d suggest he take break and come back when he can shoot. He’s a great fighter and it would be terrible to see him afflicted like Frank Shamrock and others.

Not sure, really

Like I said, the details are sketchy. I’m wondering if he or his camp will come forward with some info.

it wasnt so much the sprawling in the API videos as much as the explosive shots across the mat that would make me think otherwise.

if his knees really were shot, training with resistance bands back and forth across the mat in every workout and sprinting his ass off (as he obviously did) is not the way to encourage healing… although it may make the facility look badass, that is some careless sh—

If what youre saying is the truth, then he needs to find trainers that aren’t morons and allow them to heal properly… and he should def (as Rundownloser said) consider getting a cadaver graft in his knees and take time off

I think Sherk probably underestimated Edgar’s standup. Perhaps Sherk thought Edgar would go all out for the takedowns and he would pick him off with strikes every time he attempted to shoot. Edgar had a good gameplan though and executed it perfectly, he really only used tds to try and keep Sherk guessing

I'm sorry but....

its lose and losing…. not loose and loosing.

Nice write up, Blackout612 had an interesting point as well…. if Sherk’s knees have gone to shit, going for take downs wouldn’t have been a good gameplan.

What the fuck is a "robster craw"?

Sherk can’t wrestle the young guns in Tyson and Edgar. He couldn’t keep them down when did. And Frankie snuffed all but one.

Sherk is bigger and stronger than both, if he actually fought with his head and stop letting his ego get the better of him he would have been the number 1 contender to the LW title again. Sean needs to get his stuff together because one more performance like this and he’ll be the new Arlovski as the most disapointing fighter in MMA today.

Did Edgar trick Sherk?

Yes, he told him that after the fight was over he must immediately take a piss test down the street at the Hard Rock and he would have to get there on foot.
