Credit Dana White for His Support of Lyoto Machida

Lyoto_machida_3_medium

Before his fight with Sokoudjou, I was among those that actively disliked watching Lyoto Machida fight.  I was at UFC 76, and his fight with Nakamura almost completely killed the crowd.  As we left the arena that night, a friend asked, "why don't they just fire him?"  At the time, I didn't think that was the worst idea.

It would have been easy to get rid of Lyoto Machida.  After boring performances at UFC 70 and UFC 76, they could have given him nothing but low end opponents and refused to re-sign him when his contract expired.  Instead, they gave him the highly-touted Sokoudjou, and then Dana selected him to send Tito Ortiz packing with a loss.

Throughout his run in the UFC, when fans and reporters criticized Lyoto Machida's style, Dana never jumped on board.  He's routinely argued that Machida is just getting comfortable and has the ability to be the best fighter in the world.  They put the full weight of their marketing machine behind him to promote this fight, choosing to focus on him instead of Rashad.  They are now supposedly going to put him on TUF, which is the UFC superstar seal of approval.

The UFC's timing with Machida was near-perfect.  Even if Rampage got the first shot, Lyoto would have been next in line in the fall.  People act like he was so screwed by the UFC, but in reality he got opportunity after opportunity handed to him, and he delivered.  He got to fight Sokoudjou in his UFC debut on a huge year-end card.  He fought Tito in a very high profile match.  He fought Thiago Silva in the co-main event of one of the biggest UFC shows ever.  Is it such a tragedy that they wanted fans to actually get to know who Machida was before giving him a title shot?

I suppose Yushin Okami is now going to be the posterboy for the "UFC screws foreigners" whine train.  In reality, he was scheduled for a title shot, only to injure himself and lose it.  And before he was injured again recently, he was in line to get his shot if he won at UFC 98.  He's probably two wins away now.

Promoting foreign fighters is tricky when your business depends on convincing a mostly-white fan base to spend money on PPV shows.  It takes a little more time building guys up before their shot, and they may have to win one or two more fights than an English-speaking, charismatic white guy.  This is an unfortunate reality, but Machida proved that hard work and sacrifice can break those barriers.

Lyoto’s english has gotten much better. Did they hire a coach for him?

by szucconi on May 25, 2009 12:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I believe he has been taking English lessons on his own to connect with the fans more (and make himself more marketable in the process).
Likely a side effect of training his wrestling in the USA at AKA, forced him to learn english in order to help learn wrestling.

by pr0cs on May 25, 2009 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He does work on his English but the things he says in the promo videos and in the ring after the fight are basically prepared statements that he works on. Eventually he will be able to have a post fight interview with Rogan where he answers his questions.

yeah

he got really emotional there, he’s very humbled to be champ, and that’s how you know he’s a real champ!

by orcus on May 25, 2009 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've always liked machida's technical style

It’s only good when it’s live. The ufc will continue to promote him as champ, probably even more so then Forrest or Rashad. They just didn’t seem like solid champions. I can’t see Lyoto’s english to get to be good enough to actually be on a full season of TUF. And if he does go on TUF im sure Rampage will get all the air time.

by Hellrazer on May 25, 2009 12:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

there might be a chance for tuf 10 to be USA vs Brazil

given that this season is doing pretty good in ratings with USA vs UK, this format might not be going away any time soon. and since I can’t understand almost anything coming out of some of the guys on the UK team, maybe most Americans won’t mind the subtitle so much.

by orcus on May 25, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dana didn’t like the country vs country format but it seems to of worked out pretty good. The problem with a US vs Brazil would be the language barrier but if they could get around that they could have a interesting show.

by who me on May 25, 2009 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Haha, they gave us subtitles for the U.K. guys anyway. I bet a lot of the guys from Brazil would be as easy to understand as some of the Brits.

If they got at least part of the Brazillian team that could speak English so they could translate for the rest then this could work. There is a big jump between British English compared to US English and Portuguese compared to US English, they need guys that can at least communicate with each other on a basic level.

by who me on May 25, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Heh, Vinny would have been perfect, especially when you add in the extra drama of him being reviled in Brazil.

A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

by iiowyn on May 25, 2009 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wonder if they just made it part of the Brazillian tryouts that the fighter had to speak at least a smattering of English if they could get a strong enough group of fighters? Heck they may be able to find a whole team to represent Brazill out of guys currently training in the US (like Vinny).

Aren’t they starting the filming soon?

by iiowyn on May 25, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea wasn’t it going around they were looking for heavyweights for this season? The US vs Brazil theme is pretty much just fan discussion at this point, I’m sure Spike would of prefered Rampage vs Rashad as coaches and didn’t plan on another country vs country season.

by who me on May 25, 2009 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Vinny should eat some cakes and come back at HW?

by bigweeze on May 25, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

even if they got fighters that spoke broken english

they would still be speaking portuguese to each other and we would still need subtitles to understand the dialogue. It’s a stretch, but I think it will go down USA vs Brazil.

by orcus on May 25, 2009 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They have to speak enough English to get into interesting feuds with the other team in the house, not to mention basic everyday interactions. The fight parts would be ok and they subtitle the British guys personal interviews so that would work for the Brazillians too but it’s hard to get guys to act like jack asses towards each other if they aren’t able to have basic communication.

by who me on May 25, 2009 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it would be awesome though

having a full season without ppl acting like jack asses :P

by orcus on May 25, 2009 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That would be great but the ratings would suck.

by who me on May 25, 2009 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The fight with Ortiz may have been expected to send Lyoto packing. Tito was gone either way, and a loss would let him fire the “boring” Machida. But the win, and impressive fighting, I think Machida made his own luck.

Bad loss is the key. Dana felt like there was no way Tito could look good fighting Machida and that it would be a complete domination.

"Japan is half-Machida" - iiowyn

by Day Man on May 25, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea Machida was picked not just to beat Tito but to make Tito look bad. It turned into a boring fight but with the exception of one submission Machida absolutly dominated Tito.

by who me on May 25, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the point Rome is trying to make in regards to Tito is that Dana had enough confidence in Machida’s ability that he gave him the fight with Ortiz.

A number of guys could have beat Tito at 205 but Dana believed that 1) Machida would clown him, which he did and 2) the win would give Machida the rub.

by Sergio Hernandez on May 25, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes beat him and make him look bad at the same time, that was what I said.

by who me on May 25, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was always surprised that people (especially those who should have known better like Greg Savage and Jeff Sherwood) didn’t clue into the UFC’s attitude towards Machida when he was given a fight against Tito. Fighting Tito probably has the highest ratio of reward to risk of any fighter in MMA.

by Jahbulon on May 25, 2009 12:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I became a fan around the same time when Machida fougth Sokoudjou. I hadn’t seen his previous fights before that and was just amazed at how technical he was. I had never seen anyone fight like him. I always figured if he had enough time, he could find his killer instinct in the cage. I’m glad Dana had enough faith to keep him around. He’s gonna be a great champ.

Not really sure its as much ‘White’ as it is ‘American’ for both instances it was used there. But I do agree with the sentiment.

by -Sam on May 25, 2009 1:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I was of the opinion that White and Silva were putting Machida on the backburner (giving him subpar competition) because he was such a fan haterite. I thought that they thought that they were feeding him to Soko, who they really expected would obliterate Machida and be on his way to becoming a superstar UFC cash cow, and the loss would give them a reason to cut Machida from their roster. When they gave him Tito, I thought it was solely because White knew that his specific style would frustrate the shit out of Ortiz. I thought that they gave Machida a “step up” in SIlva out of gratitude for clowning Dana’s nemesis, but were totally shocked when he KTFO’d Thiago, thus making himself so much more marketable. The masses of new fans, and the relentless outcry from the MMA blogosphere declaring that Machida is overdue for a title shot (and Rampage’s injury), may have helped secure the Dragon a shot at the strap.

In retrospect, I have only heard Dana say good/great things about Machida, and they’ve put him on the main card since UFC 76 (despite so-called boring performances.) Maybe I was mistaken. Maybe I owe Dana an e-pology. Maybe I’m just happy that my boy is champ, and I can look past prior “high hat” behavior.

I think Machida’s match-making so far has been apt. If anything he has risen too quickly, not too slowly (if only by a little bit). I would have liked just one more fight out of Machida before a title shot, against a top-ranked opponent. The truth is that before Rashad, Machida’s best fight against a UFC LHW was with Tito Ortiz, who was barely Top 10.

As for Okami, I hope they match him against Wanderlei Silva, if he gets past Rich Franklin. It’s a fight that could co-headline and put the spotlight on Okami. Silva’s style would force Okami to put on an exciting fight. If Okami loses the UFC now has good reason to put him on the back burner. A win would gain Silva the rank of undisputed #1 contender, with victories over #2 Franklin and #4 Okami. If Okami wins, he gets the next shot at Anderson Silva.

by klown on May 25, 2009 1:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I believe Okami has Cote in September. If Wand beat Franklin, I’d have him fight the winner of that for a title shot. If he doesn’t, put him against the winner of one of the upcoming middleweight contender matches (Hendo/Bisping, Maia/Nate)…the one that doesn’t get a title shot.

by Michael Rome on May 25, 2009 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Machida got a shot earlier and won… He would have been jeered out of the arena. His brand would have been tarnished – a waste for him.

Now everyone loves the guy.

People are mistakenly limiting his star power to that of andersons…

He has the potential of being the GSP of 205. His english, looks and persona is charming enough and now his fighting style completes the package.

Nobody likes to hear this but in this business “white” sells (and im not talking about Dana). So even though Machida is no “Ken” he is a “RYU” which has its own merit.

Also, dont forget he brings with him a smaller “lesnar” effect… whereas guys who followed pro-wrestling were drawn in with Brock – the hundreds and thousands of people who grew up taking karate only to have Royce completely shatter their paradigm – now have a hero.

Amateur wrestlers were well represented now a completely new demo is being represented.

Considering the reception he got for the Tito fight that is pretty amazing. Even cosidering how people don’t like Rashad(that goes beyond race, fans still love Rampage and he ran over a pregnant woman but for some reason people seem to hate Rashad Evans) it is surprising how Machida is now catching on. I wonder how much of his following comes from the traditional martial arts crowd?

This is the one I like best

He throws the kick in a way that Rashad has to block the potential head kick, then when Rashad drops his arm when he notices it is a body kick Machida hits him with the left hand when he cannot block it.

A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

I think it’s safe to say Machida has overtaken Brock Lesnar as my 2nd favorite fighter. Of course GSP is still 1st.

On a different note, is it pretty much a sure thing that Machida and Rampage will be the coaches next season or is there still a chance they will go in a different direction? I’d really rather see this fight sooner than later and while Rampage is entertaining I think it’s a little too soon to put him back on TUF.
