UFC 104 In Los Angeles On October 24th

According to Bryan Levick at Five Ounces of Pain, Dana White announced plans for UFC 104 at last nights post-fight press conference for UFC 98:

UFC 104 which is scheduled for October 24 will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

The last UFC event in California was UFC 76: Knockout in September of 2007, which was held at the Honda Center in Anaheim.  This will not be the UFC's first trip to the Staples Center either, as UFC 60: Hughes vs. Gracie was held there in May of 2006.

It's worth noting that despite the announcement concerning UFC 104, UFC 102 and 103 have not yet been officially announced by the organization, although 102's card is nearly full, and is expected to take place on August 29th in Portland, Oregon at a yet-to-be-determined venue.  UFC 103 is rumored for a U.K. location in September.

Another interesting side-story surrounding the UFC's return to California, is the fact that "Big" John McCarthy has been re-licensed as a referee by the CSAC in the time since the UFC's last trip to the Golden State, and he has been successfully working shows in recent months.  Although Dana White and McCarthy have had a public falling-out in recent years, White will have no control over the CSAC if they decide to appoint McCarthy as a referee for 104.

Because Tito will sign with the UFC. And the time line is right for him to come back from his surgery and get a good camp in.

Well, I guess. I actually do want him back in the UFC but it just doesn’t seem likely to me.

This is where I wanted them to put UFC 100 on. Since they couldn’t have MSG in NY whats the next big market? Staples Center in LA! It hold up to 20K fans and you know all the stars would show up. Anyway I’m sure if Brock is still Champ this is where he will be headlining again, with Big John as ref :) Sweet!

since the UFC’s last trip to the Golden State, and he has been successfully working shows in recent months. Although Dana White and McCarthy have had a public falling-out in recent years, White will have no control over the CSAC if they decide to appoint McCarthy as a referee for 104.

But he does control where the UFC holds its future shows and the millions of dollars those shows bring to the local economy. Do you really think if Dana doesn’t want Big John in the cage that he can’t keep him out?

No. Dana does not want Mazzagati in and he did everything he could to keep him out.

That’s a completely different situation, Las Vegas is the UFC’s home, it’s not like they can just quit having events there. They haven’t had an event in Cali in two years and the last two years have been the most profitable in their history, they can obviously do without it.

LA is the second biggest market, and San Fran is the fifth. This is a dumb question, but was it flaws in the previous athletic commission that led UFC to stay away from Cali? I never understood why they stayed away from the state for two years.

Poor ticket sales for UFC 76 was the reason they kept out of Cali. They ran too many shows there too fast IMO.

Woot woot. I’m excited. I gotta save up money to go see Affliction 3 and now this.

If the UFC goes to Portland(which I am praying they do) it will be held at the Rose Garden since it is a PPV. If it was a UFN there is another place it could possibly be held in but I forget what it is called.
