01. Bob Sapp (10-3-1) vs. Ikuhisa "Minowaman" Minowa (41-30-8)

From the DREAM site.

- It looks like no additional fights will be announced, as Sasahara teased there may be earlier this week. Still... look at that card.

- The final press conference and weigh-ins will be held at Shinjuku Square Station in Tokyo on Monday, May 25, at 5:30 PM local time.

- Since it's for the vacant middleweight title, the Jacare vs. Mayhem fight will be one 10-minute round followed by two 5-minute rounds. It seems all the other fights will be the standard DREAM 10-and-5, though when the Super Hulk tourney was announced it was mentioned that there would be modified rules and possibly shorter rounds.

- HDNet is airing (what I assume will be) the entire show live, beginning at 5AM ET on Tuesday, May 26th, and of course we'll be here with full results, commentary and discussion.

I like that DREAM decided for Mayhem vs. Jacare to be the Main Event.

With all of the Super Hulk talk, I feel bad for the Feather Weights being swept under the rug. Looking at those Feather Weight fights makes me remember how awesome of a card DREAM.9 really is.

I agree. I would have expected HMC/Canseco or Sapp/Minowa to be the main event.

by Ahhhoki on May 20, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Who is getting swept under the rug? Every fight on the card gets aired, and the FWGP bouts are higher on the card than the Super Hulk stuff. Tokoro and Kid are the only real draws in that tournament, they need a little support.

Also, it’s doubtful TBS will leave Jacare-Miller as the main event for the primetime telecast. This event is made for TV, so it doesn’t matter what the main event in the actual arena is.

by Jordan Breen on May 20, 2009 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

True. Minowa/Shibata was shown as the main event on TBS’s DREAM.8 broadcast.

Relax, Home Skillet. I’m just referring to what the talk has been generalize towards for DREAM.9.

After the Super Hulk Grand Prix was announced no one was talking about the Feather Weight Grand Prix.

Woohoo!

Can’t wait for this card, and I absolutely agree that the FW’s and Kid fighting is getting really overshadowed by the Hulk Tourney.

I really hope after Canseco fights they add him to the Sherdog.com fighters section of the site but use a 1980s baseball card as his picture.

Aside from the stupid matchmaking on this card, it should be entertaining.

by DirtyML on May 20, 2009 3:29 PM EDT reply actions

Sherdog and Dream need to list his baseball sttats in lieu of his fighting credentials

by Chromium on May 20, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

No, they need to list his celebrity boxing stats, lol.

If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.

This card is glorious

It’s like an MMA three-ring circus

by Chromium on May 20, 2009 3:55 PM EDT reply actions

So is Canseco confirmed?

He said it was still up in the air last I checked.

by Flyghtt on May 20, 2009 4:15 PM EDT reply actions

Well, it’s a bout on a Japanese mma-card. Everything on a Japanese card is in the air, all the time, every time.

by Sventsh on May 20, 2009 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

The Jacare-Mayhem bout isn’t 10-5-5. The 1R10分・2R5分 you see on Dream’s website means only that the first round is ten minutes, and the second is five, not that there’s one ten-minute round and two five-minute rounds.

by Jordan Breen on May 20, 2009 4:31 PM EDT reply actions

Ahh, got it. I’d seen it reported as 10-5-5 other places too, probably making the same mistake. Thanks for the correction.

This card needs a Royal Rumble.

I dislike Matt Hughes.

Anyone else think Mousasi & Soku may get badly KO’d in this thing?! They are giving up tons of size & power.

by frickshun on May 20, 2009 4:59 PM EDT reply actions

Nope, I’m picking Mousasi to win the whole thing.

I definitely don’t write off Jan The Giant like most do.

by Derek Suboticki on May 20, 2009 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Mousasi, no, he may lose, but I don’t think he’ll get beat badly. Soko, ehh, quite possibly (see: Cane, Luis)

Mousasi is at risk just because of Hunt’s size and freakish power, and the fact that unlike most of the other “Hulk”-size competitors, he actually has some skill and isn’t slower than dirt. I think he’s a favourite, but it’s not unforseeable.

Unlike Subo, though, I have no idea how Jan could possibly beat Soku, even with Soku’s major problems. If Soku can’t beat The Giant, he needs to rethink this fight career thing.

We call it ‘a puncher’s chance’ in my neck of the woods – dude can box and Soko has shown very little interest in defense.

by Derek Suboticki on May 20, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I just stopped by Bookmaker and they have this line…

31509 IKUHISA MINOWA - - +170
31510 BOB SAPP - - -210

Ummm….YES PLEASE. No way is Bob Sapp losing this fight unless it’s thrown.

by AnonymousA on May 20, 2009 6:25 PM EDT reply actions

???

Are you kidding? Minowa is going to leg lock him in under 3 minutes.

by Ahhhoki on May 21, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Mousasi will be smart enough to take this fight to the ground, at least after a few exchanges. He didn’t try to trade with Manhoef.
