Quote of the Day: Randy Couture Gives Prediction for Matt Hughes vs. Matt Serra

"With Matt Serra’s newly mastered striking abilities and his already phenomenal jiu-jitsu and wrestling skill sets, I think he has the potential to be very difficult for Hughes. This could be a pivotal fight for Hughes, considering [this might be] his last outing. He’s a tough, experienced fighter that you can never count out, but I believe Serra will win the fight. [There] could be some interesting fireworks along the way with their personalities, as well. It should be fun."

-- Randy Couture, in today's "Pros Picks" on Sherdog.com.

Serra was outpicked 10 to 8 by the professional MMA fighters listed in the article.

For the record. I picked Serra by UD as well for pretty much the same reasons that Randy picked. He’s crafty and seems more dedicated than Hughes.

by Dooda on May 19, 2009 3:43 PM EDT reply actions

more dedicated?

hughes has been going through caveman training with sherk and crew.

i think he really wants to kill serra.

by dr. ransom on May 19, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Well you could argue either way I suppose. Personally from what I’ve seen, he doesn’t really expand much, doesn’t really seem interested in expanding his abilities. But it’s not like I’m there so I don’t know for sure.

But I agree he wants to kill Serra, I don’t think he’ll be able to.

by Dooda on May 20, 2009 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Caveman training… how’d that work for Sherk against a BJJ expert with better boxing? And how did it help Kaitlin Young against Gina Carano? :-)

Cardio is important – I’m not saying that it isn’t – but caveman training has a long way to go before it’s a proven training regimen.

That just shows you how many pro fighters hate Matt Hughes.

I would love to see Serra win too, but I think Hughes will win, more than likely.

by AnonymousA on May 19, 2009 3:50 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, this is definitely one of those ‘rooting for one guy but think the other will win’ kind of fights

by Derek Suboticki on May 19, 2009 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Randy doesn’t like Hughes…

by mmalogic on May 19, 2009 3:59 PM EDT reply actions

yeah, i'd take it with a grain of salt

matt once said something to the effect that he was leery of coaching tuf because he didn’t want to end up having an affair and getting a divorce. to which his wife said “do it. you’re no randy couture.”

by dr. ransom on May 19, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Can you blame him?

I’d pick a ten-year-old girl over Hughes if he’d said that about me….

http://mmajunkie.com/news/4587/kim-couture-talks-afl-contract-fridays-pro-debut-former-feud-with-matt-hughes.mma

Most notably, Couture put to rest the rumors that she met her husband while working as a stripper. Couture said she’s never stripped. In fact, the former cop later worked as a casino food and beverage director and then as an executive casino host for Wynn Las Vegas. She had a very solid reputation within the hotel-casino industry.

So how did the rumors develop? Well, UFC welterweight Matt Hughes is at least partially to blame.

“When Hughes and (Rich) Franklin were on [The Ultimate Fighter 2], I had a surprise birthday party for Randy, and I invited everybody from the show because Randy was still doing a guest coaching appearance,” Couture said. "Matt went around and told the whole (production) crew, ‘I would never go. Randy was my hero, and he’s no longer. I can’t believe he’s with a stripper or a hooker’ or whatever. And I’m like, ’What’s he talking about?’ Well, time went by, and I hated the guy. I was like, ‘This guy doesn’t even know me. I don’t know where he’s getting this information from.’ I’ve worked my ass off and had some very prestigious jobs.

“So, he kind of knew Randy wasn’t talking to him at the events we’d go to. I wasn’t talking to him and was like, ‘Who does this guy think he is?’ He came up to me at one of the (UFC) Fight Nights, and he said … ’I’m Matt Hughes. I’m an asshole, and I owe you an apology.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, from what I hear, you’re an asshole. I don’t know where you get your information from.’ And he says, ‘Oh, I’m sorry. I don’t know, but Randy won’t talk to me, and I’m going to go apologize to him now. From everybody I talk to, you’re really cool, and I just never gave you a chance, and I just didn’t know where you came from.’”

It was nice of Matt to apologize.

This is weird considering that it seems like a large majority of the fans seem to think Hughes will win. Maybe Hughes has a really abrasive personality

by Flyghtt on May 19, 2009 4:00 PM EDT reply actions

Ive got Hughes by Decision. Its not even gonna be close! Serra belongs at 55 and Hughes is incredibly motivated, that’s not a good combination for Serra.

With Matt Serra’s newly mastered striking abilities?

Really Randy? Catching GSP somehow now equates to newly mastered striking abilities? lol

Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.

by dnevil001 on May 19, 2009 4:03 PM EDT reply actions

yeah

that seems like a pretty bad analysis by randy

by yngjzy on May 19, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Randy has probably seen him sparring

by Flyghtt on May 19, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Even if Serra’s striking was that good, the key for him is TD defense. If he can’t stay off his back, he won’t win the fight. Hughes is very hard to sub and has good guard passes, good control, and good GNP from side control.

by Hardcharger on May 19, 2009 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought Randy was a bit generous when discussing Serra’s wrestling.

by MMAEruption on May 19, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Don't look too much into that prediction

I don’t know if i’d put much stock into that prediction. Keep in mind, Serra is coming off a debilitating back injury. Diminished as Hughes is, he will overpower him to a Lytle stifling like victory.

I think the reasons for the predictions being so close is due to Hughes not really being a popular or nice guy rather than anything else.

by cyke on May 19, 2009 4:13 PM EDT reply actions

I like Serra, but...

Hughes will win. I would love to see Hughes get his ass kicked, but I think Serra has stretched his 15 minutes about as far as he can.

by mythbuster on May 19, 2009 4:22 PM EDT reply actions

Hey now

Kimbo had 15 minutes. Serra is a former UFC Welterweight Champion.

Just to add a little balance to the Matt Serra love-fest and Matt Hughes hate-fest in this thread, let me just say that I hope Hughes absolutely wrecks Serra in this fight.

I’m not a Matt Hughes fan. But Serra’s an even bigger blowhard and d-bag, in my opinion. And the fact that he’s got a pretty hot wife doesn’t make up for it.

Ideally I’d like to see Hughes destroy Serra and convince him that he’ll never be a force in the UFC again and then have Hughes’s back cramp up so badly leaving the cage that neither one of them ever fights in the UFC again.

by Kierkegaard on May 19, 2009 4:45 PM EDT reply actions

To add balance?

pretty much everyone in the thread so far has said that hughes will win……?

by MauiPimpin on May 19, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Nearly everyone in this thread (at least prior to my comment) had said they “wished” Serra would win — I don’t wish Serra would win.

Hence, “balance” — you know, when nearly everyone is on one side (“I wish Serra would win”) and somebody tries to balance it out by being on the other side (“I hope Hughes wins”).

by Kierkegaard on May 19, 2009 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Your reply was fine up until your final condescending sentence....

Up until your post there were exactly two people (definitely not even close to “nearly everyone”) that said they hope Serra wins but that Hughes will probably win, and then one that said “I like Serra” but Hughes wins. Far from the “Matt Hughes hate-fest” you commented on.

You didn’t have to be a dick about it. Your comment seemed misplaced so I was genuinely confused since almost everyone up to your post picked Hughes without so much as mentioning how they felt about either fighter personally.

by MauiPimpin on May 19, 2009 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

My apologies.

I was having a rough afternoon yesterday. You’re right that I did not have to be a dick like that, and you’re right that I definitely was a dick there. That’s all on me.

Almost everyone I talk to in the “real” world about mma has been saying similar things about wishing to see Serra destroy Hughes, etc., and I think that carried over when I read the first few posts in here. AnonymousA, subo, and mythbuster had all indicated “wanting” to see Serra win. Others had commented on Hughes’s personality and generally being disliked when discussing the “expert” predictions. I equated all of that together as most people, while maybe expecting Hughes to win, suggesting that Serra is somehow more likeable or less of a dick than Hughes. That was the genesis of my initial “balance” comment.

No good excuse for jumping off the deep end on your reply like that. I like to think that, as a general rule, I’m not a complete internet-dick, so I hope you’ll accept the apology. People generally avoiding being complete dicks like I was there is one of the many things that makes the discussion here so top-notch almost all of the time.

by Kierkegaard on May 20, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions

the most important thing about couture's comment is...

PUT YOUR MONEY ON SERRA. i remember he picked rampage over chuck, forrest over rampage, gsp over bj and i’m pretty sure he picked mir against nog and brock (could be wrong on that) but the moral here is listen to the natural, he’s probably the best in the biz at picking winner’s from a fighters perspective.

by thejd on May 19, 2009 5:01 PM EDT reply actions

I feel reluctant going against him, he has a reputation like you said. Matt Hughes does too though, and despite Serra’s striking news being a little daunting, I can see Hughes winning it more times than not.

by toughaintenough on May 19, 2009 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

He also picked Kongo over Marrero.

by ilostmydog on May 19, 2009 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

he also picked

stevenson over sanchez, shamrock over diaz, griffin over evans, and wanderlei over rampage in their third match. randy really isn’t that special at fight picks

by yngjzy on May 19, 2009 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

elvis sinosic’s breakdown of this fight is pretty good, if i was going to trust my money with one of these pro’s analysis i would go with his. the pro picks are usually pretty bad though and i wouldn’t recommend using them to influence your betting.

Serra has never submitted anyone of note in MMA… His only chance is on the feet.

This is a simple fight to analyze. If the fight is on the feet Serra wins. If the fight is on the floor Hughes wins.

The probability of Serra being able to stop Matt from taking him down is very low – hence Matt is the clear favorite.

by bigweeze on May 19, 2009 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Matt Serra has not submitted anyone of note in MMA. However, i’d still give him the edge in submissions in this fight, Hughes will have to stick to GNP. No armbars or Kimura’s for him. Standup too, Hughes has never come close to dropping anyone with his hands and 2nd rd., broken rib, gassed out BJ doesn’t count. Matt Serra’s seriously tagged Karo Parisyan and K.O’d some other guy I don’t think you guys have heard of. On top of all that, Matt Serra has comparable takedowns and TD defence to Hughes. Rice, carrots, chicken rice carrots.

And Hughes is a racist:

i'm picking Serra as well

I believe that he is more motivated than Hughes. Serra knows he fighting a legendary wrestler with smothering top game. Hughes on the other hand thinks he is fighting a 155 pound one punch wonder. even though Hughes may train hard I’m sure he thinks there is no way Serra can beat him while Serra knows that he could be held down for 3 rounds.

I have the same “sources” as Franklyn “Sources” McNeil, so I’m going to go with my “sources” and “source” the answer that my sources tell me to “source”.

The winner by GNP is Matt.

There you have it.
