Minors Banned From UFC 99 in Germany

K_c3_b6ln_deutz_k_c3_b6lnarena_mediumBad news for youngsters in Germany hoping to attend the fights on June 13:

A front-page article on Sunday in Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, one of the country’s biggest newspapers, has led to a slew of negative publicity in the country. This resulted in the arena agreeing to ban anyone under the age of 18 from attending the show at the Laxness Arena [sic] after the head of a local child protection commission pushed for it.

In Monday’s edition of BILD, the country’s biggest newspaper, Marek Lieberberg, UFC’s local promoter, said child protective services of Cologne asked for a ban on minors’ attendance at the card, and he accepted it. However, the article itself had incorrect information, stating that everything is legal in UFC fights with the exception of biting and eye poking.

The good news  the legal age to possess or consume alcohol in Germany is 16, so the kids can drown their sorrows and watch from home.

So sick and tired of this spurious reporting. At best it’s incompetence, and at worst, it’s lying. I wish I could do that at my work. That way there’d be no need for this pesky work ethic that makes me try to get it right the first time.

lol

so they can get drunk off of their asses, but the kiddies can’t watch mma. i don’t see why the ufc is even trying to get into germany. i know they want more exposure, but this isn’t worth it.

I was thinking the same thing. Seems like there are a lot of other countries in the EU that would have been better suited. Germany has some really crazy laws around violence, doesn’t make sense to bring the sport there yet.

I’m french, people here in france may be worst than the germans toward mma.

Ah...

I’d always heard it the other way. That with the strong kickboxing background..etc it would be an easier path into Europe. I guess I was wrong.

You can bet that the Savat traditionalists would have the same attitudes as Merchant and Lampley.

France + kickboxing + men in tights = Savat

Well, German is the largest Economy and has the largest population in Western Europe. I guess that is a big factor.

Reasonably it would be easier to organize events in The Netherlands, but it is quite much smaller than Germany (even if they really fit a lot of people into their small area).

Quick culture contrast between USA and Germany:
USA – Boobies are evil, violence is ok.
Germany – Boobies are natural, violence is bad.

You nailed it pretty well.

So where can we go if we like boobies and violence?

This is probably spot on. But it is like that in all Western Europe, so country doesn’t matter.

At least we have naked people on state TV! (and curse words)

14 year olds can use high calibre weapons for target practice in Germany, but they can’t watch two men agree to punch each other in the face.

I wonder which event would have a higher impact on their mind?

I hope they get their head out of their ass on this one, make the ban realistic, ban kids under 13. There are plenty of teenagers who should be allowed to see this, and it is almost insulting to the parents of german kids that the child protective agency can over step their bounds into entertainment like this.

14 yr olds can go watch a boxing or kickboxing match though.

According to multiple sources, including Dave Meltzer, some of this slander is coming from boxing promoters who feel their turf is being invaded.

by AlwaysRelaxing on May 19, 2009 1:36 PM EDT reply actions

That’s probably what it is.

the UFC should start a campaign to make sure the same restrictions are applied to upcoming boxing matches, since boxing has more injuries.

by Phildo on May 19, 2009 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I hate that I need to point out that arguing to apply boxing regulations to MMA, and at the same time saying boxing has more injuries, is a detriment to our goals.

Man, it must suck to have rival promoters behind the scenes trying to keep you out of an area you want to hold a show in.

Germany Shermany

I am interested in the subject of children watching, participating in and attending MMA events. I was alittle uneasy when Scott Smith brought his young sons into the ring after his war with Benji Radach. It was obvious that Scott’s youngest son was in a bit of shock looking at his Dad’s battered face. You could see the kid really trying to get some distance from Smith’s face to see the damage. Then the kid (Mikey i think) asks, “Are you ok dad?” Scott nods and gives him a big thumbs up. I doubt Mikey bought it though. My sons 14 and 9 watch MMA with me and I have always been open with them about what is going on and emphasized that the fighters are professional athletes. While the 14 yr. old watches with interest he is not as into it as my 9 year old who always wants to wrestle and spar with me and his brother. I am constantly teaching him that it is far more important to know how to stay out of a fight than it is to know how to fight but whether or not that message is getting through is tough to tell. I have taught both my sons who are much larger than other kids their age that if you are in a fight and you get your opponent to the ground that you do not purue them further. Let them get up and urge your opponent to stop fighting. If they get up then it is back on. However, I question whether they would abide by this rule after seeing so much GnP. It always comes down to parenting but I often wonder if my enthusiasm for MMA is going to have a negative effect on the opportunity for my sons to be peace makers rather than ass kickers. I definitely would prefer them to make peace during confrontation their primary goal but is that realistic when they are becoming such fans of MMA? I am just throwing it out there. Any other opinions are welcomed.

Just the fact that you question yourself shows me you’re going in the right direction. If your kids grow up reasoning the same way, you’ve done a good job. I don’t think their is a right or wrong answer, my Grandad started taking me to boxing matches when I was 6 without my Moms knowledge, and I like to think I turned out alright. But, as a parent, put in the same position, I dunno.

by bubbafat on May 19, 2009 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

as long as you explain to your children that what happens in a mixed martial arts fight is different from what happens in the real world.

Just like what happens on the TV is different, or just like what happens in a video game is different.

Also, side note...

Bild is Germany’s biggest newspaper in the way that the Enquirer would be the US’s biggest newspaper. It’s Germany’s tabloid.

No surprise really

Germany has been on a long crusade of censorship and the like for a long time now, ever since they decided fascism was the best way to make up for their history of… fascism.
