UFC 2009: Undisputed Could Defy Expectations
This article originally appeared on VideoGameStocks.net, a blog I write about video game stocks. (duh) I thought it might be of interest to MMA fans so I thought I'd post it here. Please keep in mind that it's oriented towards investors with limited knowledge of MMA.
Today’s a big day for the Ultimate Fighting Championship and the world of mixed martial arts with the release of THQ’s (THQI) UFC 2009: Undisputed for the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles. As the first truly high-quality MMA gaming experience, UFC 2009 is expected to sell about 2 million units within THQ’s current fiscal year.
However, those expectations may be on the conservative side based upon recent observations in the MMA and gaming worlds. Despite a tough economy, the UFC is absolutely thriving. Pay-per-view buys for the company’s recent UFC 91, 92, and 94 events were all above 1 million, and the UFC’s schedule for the next few months is packed with hot fights, including July’s landmark UFC 100.
And remember – most people don’t watch UFC PPV’s at home alone, and tons of folks pack themselves into bars each month to watch the fights. So for the hottest UFC events, there could be upwards of 10 million people watching, a great deal of whom fit into the key video-game demographic of 18-34 year-old males. That’s one heck of a powerful captive audience that guarantees a hot start for UFC 2009.
But what could turn the game into a mainstream video-game hit is positive reviews, which can have a dramatic effect on sales figures. Just read this excerpt from a Wall Street Journal article published a couple years back:
About 18 months ago, Activision also conducted a study of 789 games made for Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 2 console and found a strong correlation between some high game scores and strong sales. Activision Chief Executive Robert Kotick says the link was especially notable for games that score above 80% on Game Rankings, which grades games on a 1-to-100 percentage basis, with 100% being a perfect score. For every five percentage points above 80%, Activision found sales of a game roughly doubled. Activision believes game scores, among other factors, can actually influence sales, not just reflect their quality.
Right now, UFC 2009 is sitting at 88% at Metacritic, which bodes well for an initial pop from non-UFC fans. However, that score will come down in short order. There is currently a small number of reviews (8 for the 360 version, 7 for the PS3), and the averages have been skewed by the ridiculous 100/100 scores given by GamePro and GameShark. With so few ratings for the game, those individual numbers have a huge effect on the overall MetaCritic rating.
So while the UFC and THQ are likely gloating right now about these positive reviews, the Metacritic/GameRankings (which are largely interchangeable) averages will come down, which could very much affect how sales trend over the next few months. If the average score lands in the 80-85% range, the game could sell 3 million+ units or even more.
P.S. If you’re rushing out to pick up the game today, I recommend heading over to Best Buy (BBY), which is offering a free UFC DVD and $10 gift card with purchase.
Disclosure: I own shares of THQ (THQI)

I wrote an article about UFC Undisputed being the next Madden
I agree with most of your points in that article. UFC is THE next big video-game sports franchise. The UFC has a long way to go in catching the NFL, though I do suspect that there is a high concentration of gamers among MMA fans.

mark it down
2.5 million copies sold in the first 6 months
That's great, but how does it affect Lyoto Machida?
I don’t think that’s unreasonable at all.

I’d be stunned if this game sold 3 million copies. It’s improbable. The 09 video game market is going to be positively flooded with AAA titles and sequels to major IP’s. 3 million is a major long shot and I say it doesn’t happen. The review scores will settle around mid-8’s.

Agreed.

Keep in mind that THQ released the game in a favorable time period – not an awful lot of competition in terms of new games right now. It’s far enough away from the likes of Modern Warfare 2 and similar mega-hits.
Yes there is
Bionic Commando is getting similar reviews and Punch-Out lands on Wii. That’s this week alone. Look at the next 6-8 weeks. Loaded.
I poop rainbows.
No, just referencing MW2 as a mega-title that represents enormous competition for all gaming dollars. MW2 is the must-have of the year for the industry.
Based on 20 seconds of footage?
There’s a ton of shit coming out this year. Halo:ODST could end up being that title. Or FF XIII. Or Mass Effect 2. Or Assassin’s Creed 2. Or Bayonetta. Or God of War III.
I poop rainbows.
Been playing the inFamous demo all weekend and it is fricken SWEET!

Well..
Your interest in Bionic Commando isn’t the pulse of the nation. I thought it looked mediocre, but it’s getting quality reviews.
I poop rainbows.
Sheesh, I never said it was! The point is, Bionic Commando isn’t buzzing nearly as much as UFC 2009.
You seem to have an unusual sense of what will effect sales dynamics. Sales are individual; I’m not comparing their respective sales projections. You’re talking about 3 mill for Unleashed and there are many extenuating factors that will effect such an ambitious figure.
I poop rainbows.
Yep, it’s complicated! Let’s agree to disagree and wait until THQ’s next conference call – hopefully they’ll break out some actual sales figures. Debating the flaws in NPD’s data collection methodology isn’t very productive…
I will note, lastly...
That I hope it does upwards of 3 million. I mean, my eyes will pop out of my head, but it would say a lot about MMA’s viability in popular media and the lengths to which Zuffa’s fans will go to support their products.
I poop rainbows.
As for Punch-Out
The polarity is that it’s also a fighting/sportsish title. That’s why it’s sales count. There are millions of consumers that own both systems. Someone who owns a Wii+ may be less likely to drop 60 on UFC should they purchase Punch-Out this week. I intend to purchase both, personally.
I poop rainbows.
Yes there is
Check out a release schedule. This Summer is surprisingly loaded compared to previous years.
I poop rainbows.
How could the game possibly have a good control scheme?
Hit the armbar button, ooh ooh transition to triangle, oh no he stacked and passed my guard, I can never remember which button is to shrimp….
Just seems too complicated to have much longevity…..I mean compare it to WWE games. I’m sure they sell ok, similiar devoted fan base and whatnot, but really just button mashers….
Have you played Madden lately?
All video games are getting more complicated now that the systems can handle it, and it hasn’t hurt any other sports game or Grand Theft Auto or any other video game.
Yes, if you switched from playing Goldeneye for N64 to picking up Halo, you’d probably have a tough time, but that’s what video games are these days. this isn’t really a problem that any other genre of game is having, I don’t see why it would hurt the UFC game.
As far as Summer gaming seasons go, this one is stacked

I dono, the game looks good but also looks like it will get old really quick.
Game on that list that I plan on buying are:
UFC 2009
Infamous
Red Faction
Overlord 2
BF 1943
I may pick up Bionic Commando on the cheap when it goes on sale.
Prototype looks fun but I have a feeling it’s ‘open worldness’ will play too much like Mercenaries 2 (which got old pretty quick).
FNR4 looks okay but FNR3 also got boring fast so I think I’ll skip the sequel.
