REPORT: Mirko Cro Cop Returning to UFC in June Against Mustapha Al-Turk
Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.
From the out-of-the-blue department: a press release was posted on Mirko Cro Cop's official website today, stating that the legendary Croatian striker (24-6-2, 1-2 UFC) will return to the UFC next month on the card for UFC 99 in Cologne, Germany, where he will apparently take on fellow heavyweight Mustapha Al-Turk (6-4, 0-1 UFC).
A few caveats before I quote the press release though: although the site is indeed Mirko's official website, I have seen no news of this bout or Mirko's UFC return anywhere else on the web today. Mustapha Al-Turk was already scheduled to take on debuting American Top Team heavyweight Todd Duffee on the 99 card, and that fight is still listed on the official event page on the UFC website.
Nonetheless, like I mentioned, this press release is on Cro Cop's official homepage, so unless some hacker got creative, there's likely something to this story. I'm still awaiting official UFC confirmation or reports on other reliable sites (Junkie, Weekly, Fighters Only etc.) before I get my hopes fully up.
With that being said:
Mirko's next fight is set for June 13th in Germany, which means that he's back in the UFC, a place that he didn't have his best moments:
"I decided to fight in the UFC again, because of the stronger competition in the heavyweight division. My next opponent will be Mustapha Al-Turk. I didn't do well in my first three appearances - I wasn't myself. By returning to the cage I want to prove that I can still fight at highest level, no matter when or where.", claims Cro Cop.
UFC 99 will be Cro Cop's first fight this year with the possibility of three fights coming by years end.
"It's hard to talk about concrete plans, but I would really like to fight at least three times this year. I wish to fight against quality opponents and to fight my way up to a title shot but for now, I'll focus only on my next fight and after that we'll see what's going to be on the menu next", says Cro Cop.
Although the UFC 99 card looks stacked, it seems that the UFC officials can see the benefits of hiring a top European fighter for their first ever UFC show in Germany.
I want to say thank you Mr. Dana White for your interest and for an invitation back to the UFC. I owe you a lot from our first deal, and I'll make it up to you.", promises Cro Cop.
Al-Turk as an opponent also makes sense for Cro-Cop's return, as the Brit is tailor-made for a signature KO victory by the Croatian. Of course many thought the same thing when Mirko fought Gonzaga, but Al-Turk is nowhere near the threat that Gonzaga was as far as takedowns and BJJ. Although he's primarily a wrestler, Al-Turk has shown in Cage Rage and while getting brutalized by Cheick Kongo that he doesn't particularly excel at it. He's likely heavy handed, but most of his strikes are delivered from top position on the ground, rather than while standing.
If the fight does happen, I expect Cro Cop to use his excellent takedown defense (provided his knee injuries are fully healed) to thwart any attempts by Al-Turk to get him to the ground, en-route to a brutal KO from punches or the trademark high kick.
UPDATE #1: Thanks to GeeDub in the comments section, I've learned that much of the quoted content in the press release comes from Mirko's official blog at: MMA ID
UPDATE #2: The Todd Duffee-Mustapha Al Turk bout has now been removed fromhe UFC's event page for UFC 99.
UPDATE #3: Dave Meltzer at the Wrestling Observer Newsletter and Michael David Smith at AOL Fanhouse have received independent confirmations from Dana White that Cro Cop vs. Al Turk is a go for UFC 99.

I’m pretty sure I just said that he sucked in the UFC and that fighting in an Octagon fucked up his angles.

Everyone criticizes him fighting again unless his rumors have to do with him fighting in the UFC. LOL!

Funny how fans want their favorite fighters in their favorite organization.

Well, that’s definitely an opponent you’d want to start out with.

Poor Mustafa – first Kongo, now Cro Cop. Enjoy your parting gifts.

At least CC lets you keep your balls.

And if you knee CC’s balls he doesn’t retaliate like Kongo.

If Mirko shows up ready to go...
i’d say he pretty much kicks the shit out of Al- Turk. Not to say that Mustapha is a can, but Cro Cop should be able to sprawl on any shots thrown his way, and beat him up standing. He needs to make sure to set up his kicks with punches, though, like he used to do so effectively; IMO, that’s the key to him for a career resurrection. That, and a potential drop to 205.

This has also been posted on Mirkos blog at MMA-ID.com So thats 2 creative hackers required to make this news false! :)
Please
I wouldn’t go and report news based on pages I hacked myself…I’d sit and bask in the glow of other industrious MMA bloggers doing that for me ;)
I don't know what to believe...
1/2/2009 – “I believe that during 2009 I will fight three more times for Dream, then I hope for a farewell fight in the UFC.”
2/16/2009 – When talking about who he will be fighting with next, he mentioned DREAM and the UFC, however he ended a answer with: “and possibly another American organization”
4/15/2009 – Mirko Filipović has confirmed that he knows for cetain that he’s fighting 20th July in Japan for Dream.

Yeah, it would be awesome, but I’ll believe it when it happens and not a second sooner.

Cro Cop is a huge question mark for me.
I still doubt CC is “back” in terms of being able to compete at the elite UFC level. I’ll mark this off in the “see it to believe it” column. Though I am hopeful. :)
I love me some Sexyama!
From Fanhouse
After multiple reports surfaced online of the fight, I checked with a UFC spokesperson who gave FanHouse this short and sweet statement from UFC President Dana White: “Cro Cop is in.”
Possibly, or maybe Herring/Velasquez
…but that’st likely since they’re trying to push Velasquez as one of their next big things.
crosses fingers that Joe Silva decides to have a 6-fight main card, since there’s no title defense
Fuck Yes!
Sucks for Al Turk but this is excellent news. I am guessing Swick/Saunders gets bumped to the undercard. Also, it seems that Al Turk/Duffee is back on the event page again. Hmmmm. Hopefully it’s just there as a placeholder until they officially announce the new match this weekend or whenever.
I just checked again
and Al Turk/Duffee is second from the bottom. If other people aren’t seeing it, I don’t know wtf is going on then.
Dana's confirmation
just turned my day into an total win.

Todd Duffee
posted on the UG forum this afternoon, essentially stating that he was unaware of the change to his fight. Sucks for him. It wouldn’t be the first time that UFC personnel news (fight changes, firings, etc.) has broken on the itnernet before the fighters themselves were officially informed.
Fisher/Uno is getting bumped. They need Swick on a main card because he may get the next 170 shot, and obviously they want Herring/Cain on there. With no title fights though Fisher/Uno is almost sure to make it.
Dammit – that was one I was looking forward to.

Nobody wants to watch Swick and there is no way in hell he should get a title shot at 170 anytime soon.
Good job UFC. =(
P.S. Everyone wants to watch Uno vs Fisher.

Why the Swick hate? His only loss since January 2004 is to Okami (talk about someone nobody wants to watch)

double standard. being 8-1 in the ufc doesnt mean you deserve a title unless youre a foreigner. then youre being ducked and fed bad fights.

Yeah, the HW division lost a lot when Cro Cop walked away from it… with a 1-2 record (lone win over Eddie Sanchez)

The effects of CroCop's last UFC run
Basically, CroCop showing up DOA in the UFC has made a generation of new fans less appreciative of Pride and temporarily fooled everyone into thinking that Gonzaga and Kongo were top-10 HWs.
The guy is a future MMA HOFer for sure, but he’s responsible for more misconceptions than any fighter since Royce Gracie.
