Quote of the Day: Wanderlei Silva Wants to Put Money on His Fight at UFC 99

Wand_rampage_medium"If Anderson believes in Franklin so much, bet U$ 50,000 and let's see who takes the money."

Wanderlei Silva, responding to news of Rich Franklin training with Anderson Silva.

He also makes it clear in the piece he wants to fight Anderson after he beats Rich.  He probably has to win another fight or two at 185 before getting a shot, but if Henderson and Marquardt win their fights, the UFC might be more interested in giving Wanderlei a title shot than one of them.  He just needs to focus on beating Rich Franklin, which is no easy task.

An even smarter move would be for Wandy to bet $50 000 on Franklin. The legality of that bet might be a little questionable.

You can’t do that. I think that would warrant an investigation. In fact, I’d be weary that fighters be able to bet on themselves or their opponent because how do we know they aren’t conspiring to make a shitload of money.

In my mind its not OK for professional athletes in any sport to bet money on anything ever at all.
This just opens the door for them to become involved with “colorful” betting interests.

I dislike Matt Hughes.

I’m pretty sure there are regulations governing athletes placing bets.

i think youre right.. although, his cornerman/friend/neighbor/training partner are free to do so.. :)

if I was Anderson, I’d take that bet..

Thank God for Wandy

He is finally brining some much needed spice to the UFC’s middleweight division.

?

This isn’t even a middleweight fight.

I poop rainbows.

No immediate title shot for Wandy

You can’t get a title shot when you’re 0-0 at the weight class. If you’re so cocky, Wandy, bet $50,000 on yourself. That has to be legal, right?

by Derek Suboticki on May 17, 2009 12:45 AM EDT reply actions

But Anderson only wants the big name opponents now.

Wandy fits the bill nicely. He even is a ballsy striker just like Silva wanted. What if Forrest beats the shit out of Anderson though (very low probability I know)? I would then like to see Wandy vs. Forrest (since Wandy has said that he plans to fight in both weights).

by Bandaka on May 17, 2009 12:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I’d definitely take that bet.

Wanderlei vs Yushin Okami

… would be the best next step for Wanderlei if he beats Franklin.

by klown on May 17, 2009 1:13 AM EDT reply actions

I have a tough time seeing this happen...

but if Wand brutally KO’s Franklin, all eyes on Anderson.

by I Can't Feel My Face on May 17, 2009 1:14 AM EDT reply actions

I dont know if I am alone on this

But Wand has lost 4 of his last 5 fights, and 3 of them have been pretty nasty KOs. I think Rich is going to hand him another KO and then he should consider hanging it up. I just don’t see him and Anderson Fighting at any weight class ever.

by despisedIcon856 on May 17, 2009 1:42 AM EDT reply actions

To be fair here, most people were picking Wand to beat Rampage. he got nailed with an insane left hook, but he looked good before that. I think Franklin is the better fighter but he has the potential to be overwhelmed, I definitely give Wand a decent shot (40-50%) of winning this fight.

by Michael Rome on May 17, 2009 2:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree. Both fighters are at a crossroads right now.

If Wand can rush Rich before the latter can find a groove, it’ll be his fight. I think the longer it lasts, the more confident Franklin will get, and the more likely he’ll win. Win or lose, I just hope Wandy doesn’t get brutalized again.

ditto

he put a hurtin on ol jardine and i thought he would have gotten destroyed by jardine. His fight is over if it gets out of the first round, it will give Rich the time to think about things. I really don’t wanna see either guy hit the mat out cold…i kinda like em both….i am torn

strike, submit, never quit

To be fair here, most people were picking Wand to beat Rampage.

To be fair, most people aren’t very good at picking fights.

Ditto, but I’m hardly great at calling fights.

you're not alone

Wanderlei should be retired. While he’s had moments in his recent fights, he just doesn’t look the same. Trying to cut weight when your body already seems to be giving up on you probably won’t change much for him. I would still like to see him swinging in the octagon though and give him a decent shot against Rich, but only because Franklin seems to cave against aggressive fighters. Have to agree with you though, never ever with Anderson.

Franklin seems to cave against aggressive fighters

I’ve never seen evidence of this. He battled like a mother to survive the 1st Rd against Machida. Just getting off the stool for the 2nd was impressive. He also fought his ass off against Anderson, even after being mauled brutally. In both fights, just surviving to the 2nd Rd showed competitiveness and heart. His skill set did him no favors but he did not cave. At all.

by jebushchrist on May 17, 2009 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Like what you said about Rich, but for clarity I didn’t mean cave as in “quit.” Franklin has fell only three times but it was from series of aggressive strikes which is Wanderlei’s forte.

by toughaintenough on May 17, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Fuck, if the line’s right, I’m putting money on Florian.

by Derek Suboticki on May 17, 2009 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

He probably has to win another fight or two at 185 before getting a shot,

He might also need to COMPETE at 185lbs first and not 195lbs.

by Higgz on May 17, 2009 9:00 AM EDT reply actions

If Wanderlei demolishes Franklin, I think he only needs one fight at 185 before getting a shot at Anderson. Marquardt and Henderson are great fighters, but I doubt their rematches will go much differently.

I think if Wanderlei beats Franklin, he should fight Okami. The winner of that gets the title shot after Bisping – if he wins, if not – or Demian Maia (if he wins). Silva or Okami should slot in above Marquardt and Henderson even if they win.

Hopefully that’s all coherent.

by Sam Cupitt on May 17, 2009 10:17 AM EDT reply actions

Wands problem isadapting from pride. He still has the ’let’s put on a show’ philosophy, and so he exposes himself a lot against people who are too good for that. If he got cleaner striking and some patience, he’d have something.

I’m thinking there’s a reason all the pride fighters have had such a hard time adapting and it isn’t age.
