Chuck Liddell: "I Couldn’t Say That I’m Not Going to Fight Again."
MMA Madness scores an interview with Chuck in which he says no decisions have been made about his retirement:
“I need some time off anyway, and when everyone stops worrying about it, I’ll make my decision on my own,” Liddell said.
“Right now, I couldn’t say that I’m not going to fight again.”
He also draws a line for his friend Dana White:
“I’ll listen to [White] as a friend, but he’s not going to make me do anything,” Liddell stated, before issuing a warning:
“The last thing you want to do if you want me to do something is to tell me I have to do it.”
He also addresses the war of words between White and his trainer John Hackleman:
“I told [White and Hackleman], ‘It’s between you guys,’” Liddell said. “They both care about me in their own way.”
Good for Chuck.

He just wants to be left alone
I think if he had some time off it might help him reconsinder retirement.

I don’t not misunderstand Chuck’s headline quote.

Even if he is done
He doesn’t want it to be shoved down his throat. I don’t think he wants it to look like Dana made him retire. Even if he did want to retire right now, he probably would wait for the shit to settle a bit.

Cue Dana White’s f-bomb-laden outburst about how he will never let Chuck fight in UFC or anywhere else ever again.

I hope we’ve seen the last of Chuck Liddell fighting, if only because we’ve already seen the last of the best of Chuck Liddell fighting.

These guys know full well going into a fight career that they could come out looking and talking like Meldrick Taylor. As much as it breaks my heart, if it was up to me to prevent Chuck from that possible damage, then it would be my obligation to prevent boxing and martial arts from happening altogether. Do you see the conundrum?

this is a lose/lose situation for everybody
I hate to see Chuck going out on such a sour note! If he would have left the sport after the Wandy Fight I think he would have cemented his place! He has been clipped in just about every recent fight that I can remember
all you gotta do is...

after re-reading that sounded bad
not to say he hasnt cemented his place, but its like Jordan playing after his 2nd 3 peat
all you gotta do is...

Yeah he’s been laying on the mat a lot lately. Its hard to see him lose like he has but it would be harder to see him lose to scrubs and wreck his draw. This call should be made by doctors. Knowing what they’ll say I think we’ll still see him back.

The UFC hasn’t had a single death or serious injury (according to Dana White) in 20 years so maybe I was wrong to insinuate he could fight without doctors approval as they must have some pretty good rules and regulations surrounding a safe process of competition. I don’t suppose doctor’s examine or deny fighters for failing chins.

Seems like Chuck is taking the smart approach and letting this blow over a bit before he makes any decisions.
There are plenty of recognizable fighters Chuck could beat or even KO still and sell PPVs… the question is weather or not he wants to fight 2nd tier competition. He’s been fighting top guys his entire career, so who knows if he’d be willing to settle for fights with Coleman or Houston Alexander or those types.
Im a huge Wandy fan, but truth is… he’s had a very smilar run of KO’s in the past few years. But everyone still wants to see him go out there and brawl. I think Chuck could actually have a few more fights if they are chosen wisely.
Chuck/Tito 3 would make hardcore fans angry but it would be huge for any other promotion’s growth. People may SAY they dont want a Chuck/Randy 4, but those same fans would most likely buy that PPV to see if Captain America can add a bookend to that series. Hell, i couldnt turn down a Chuck/Big Nog PPV to be honest. He and Hack have also been outspoken about their desire for a rematch with Jardine. Even a 40,41, 42 yr old Chuck could beat Jardine if he checked some leg kicks and caught a body kick or two. Chuck/Wand 2 would be big reguardless of the outcome of Wand’s next fight, and I would love to see Chuck take a year off and then go at it with Rich Franklin (who is more than likely out of the title picture in both of his weight classes).
I understand everyone’s concern for the Iceman because he is so beloved. But it seems as though Dana is ok with HOF’er Coleman eventually fighting in the cage with an oxygen mask or legend Wanderlei Silva (who has taken more shots to the dome than Chuck) leaving brain cells in the cage everytime he leaves it. He just doesnt want the face of American MMA and the man who piggybacked it into the mainstream getting punch drunk.
Chuck has lost a step for sure, but if the man wants to fight, then let him….and make some cheese off of it Dana. It seems like chuck has become the little kid in his room with a pillow over his ears so he cant hear his parents (Hack and Dana) fighting. they should both chill and let grown up Chuck make his mind up in his own time. Hack is risking pissing Dana off to the point that he shuts the door on Chuck’s fight career for real, and Dana is risking pissing Hack off to the point where Chuck may listen to another promotions gaudy contract offers.
Most people didnt want Jordan to come back with the Wizards, but it wasnt up to us or even David Stern. he had earned the right to make his own decision even if it was a silly one. Chuck has done the same for MMA. If he wants to fight still, keep him in the UFC and find a suitable/acceptable opponent for him.
I LOVE how competitive the UFC is, and how it truly lets the best fight the best to determine who’s #1… but IMO, not all fights are about getting into the title hunt, some are about money and some are just about fighting. We’ll see if Chuck feels the same way.
