Quote of the Day: Lyoto Machida Wants Brock Lesnar

3532851885_4943d1ebde_medium

I don’t think about fight at heavyweight division, but I think about a challenge, maybe against the heavyweight champion, but it’s time for it now. My focus, for sure, is on my division now, later is later. Maybe a fight against Brock Lesnar. He’s a huge guy, showed himself very aggressive and strong, who knows if one day we can fight… I respect him as a fighter, he’s very strong, but I’m professional and I’d like to test myself.

Lyoto Machida talks to Tatame.com

Interesting thinking here. Wonder if he caught a case of inter-weight-class grandiosity from B.J. Penn in their match. Fighters really ought to be tested for all communicable conditions before being allowed to fight.

Toro! Hey!

For this fight Lyoto would need to wear a sequined costume and a red cape. Brock should wear horns.

Keep firing Assholes!

This is a dream competition for me. I drink as much coffee as I want, and eventually I hallucinate.

When I read that, it sounds more like the “idea” of the ultimate challenge in the sport which is fighting the biggest weight class. I don’t think he’s deluded like Mousasi or Penn.

by frickshun on May 15, 2009 9:48 AM EDT reply actions

I wonder if Lyoto’s buddy Anderson Silva thinks that it would be a pretentious move

by nastyem on May 15, 2009 9:59 AM EDT reply actions

This was during a chat with Tatame subscribers.

So some dumbass probably asked “WOULD U FITE BROCK LEZNAR?” and Lyoto had to come up with something to say.

Dude’s gonna need a hell of a lot of Chitos in order to weigh in over 205.

I think he weighed around 215 when he fought Franklin. I imagine he walks around close to 225.

Maybe after getting the strength and conditioning coach, but Machida is one of the smallest LHW.

A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

by iiowyn on May 15, 2009 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions

If Machida walks around at 225 his bones must be made of lead. I just don’t see where the mass could be because he doesn’t have much muscle on him compared to other LHWs.

by virginiatech on May 16, 2009 4:38 AM EDT up reply actions

I think he stands a better chance against Lesnar than most 205ers. When you’re facing a huge weigh disadvantage, elusiveness is probably the best quality to have. Unfortunately for him, Lesnar would catch him some time during the match, take it to the ground, and it would be over pretty quickly from there.

WOW. No downside to this match. BOOK IT, SILVA!

Ditto

I’d pay to see him fight Brock.

And winner fights a bear. And the winner of THAT fight gets Fedor.

Pfft

Now you’re just being childish: They can’t beat Fedor.

Who said they would? Winner of THAT fight takes on a pack of robot hyenas.

Stupid matchup idea

MAchida needs to stay at LHW for a while before this matchup makes sense. Also, by the time Machida does succesfully defend his belt a coule of times, Brock Lesnar will probably have lost by then.

by Bandaka on May 15, 2009 11:36 AM EDT reply actions

This is not a matchup idea.

Machida just said a possible fight that would be interesting was Lesnar. No one is actually asserting a matchup here.

Okay: I’m reporting today that there’s a rumored match being set up between Lesnar and Machida.

I’m also rumoring the match. What?

What is it with all these weight class changes?

Sugar Ray and Lamotta fought, what, six times? If you beat everybody, you let the challengers work their way back up, and then you fight them again. That’s how combat sports work. You don’t go fight out of your division for the fun of it.

All this weight class jumping just underscores the freak show aspect of the sport. And yes, I know there’s a lot of jumping around in weight classes in modern boxing. I think that’s stupid, too. I think they should go back to the original six weight classes.

Although detractors decry (MMA) as a brutal, bloody form of human cockfighting, aficionados know it is a brutal, bloody, totally fucking awesome form of human cockfighting. -The Onion

I really disagree

How is a fighter moving ONE division up (when he basically already weighs enough in ‘walking around’ time) is suddenly a ‘freak show’ ? Machida isn’t really smaller than Couture or Fedor , two of the all time best heavyweights in the world. Fedor is a CHUBBY 230 pounder , Machida probably walks around at 220-225 , so basically take away Fedor’s fat and he’s smaller than Machida (and Couture). Would u say Fedor vs Lesnar is a freak show ? I think Fedor and Couture both proved that under certain circumstances size doesn’t always matter . Does Brock have a good chance of taking Machida down and pounding him to oblivion ? Yes . Does Machida have a reasonable chance to KO Brock or tire him out and grind a decision ? Also yes . This fight DOES make since , if Machida wants to test himself in heavyweight after possibly becoming the LHW champion more power to him !
As for Brock vs Couture , I think it was a GOOD EXAMPLE of how Couture managed to stay in the fight despite being so under-sized . he was taken down but he also managed to get up , and he basically did a good job untill he was caught . Who knows what would happen in such a fight by round 4 , Brock actually didn’t look that great conditioning-wise.
Couture did get KOed but that’s nothing really new , smaller guys like Liddel KO’ed him before , he took a big shot and fell down , big deal like we don’t see these things in every ufc event. So my point is , in one sentence , if a fighter can be successful in more than one weight class more power to him – challenging yourself is a big part of this sport , I mean GSP is probably rich enough to retire if he isn’t already , so why does he keep fighting ?

by JoelMan on May 15, 2009 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Lyoto

would smash him.

Just kidding, but I would pay to watch it. We should do a poll.

by MauiPimpin on May 15, 2009 1:54 PM EDT reply actions

When he says “but it’s time for it now” I’m pretty sure he’s actually saying, I’m in the now right now, and that’s later, not that the fight needs to happen right now. The time for now is now and not later (a fight with Lesnar). So I think something gets lost in translation.

by Dooda on May 15, 2009 2:59 PM EDT reply actions

I think he would translate well

to the heavier weight division and opponents. As a Sumo practitioner he has learned how to handle body frames larger and heavier than his. Throw in his speed and elusiveness, and I think he does just fine. Obviously every fight he takes in that weight class would have to end up going to decision for him to win. As, he hasn’t shown too much knockout power or submission ability in the LHW division.

If I were a decent LHW I would call out Brock too

So far the guys a big hype machine without much of a resume. He hasn’t fought a striker or won against a decent BJJ with submissions. He’s beaten a much smaller wrestler and Herring (not sure how to classify him).

Michael Vick says what?

by Derek Suboticki on May 16, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Michael Vick can kiss my ass, I despise college athletics for various reasons. Because of the success of the Tech football team the year before I attended, applicants massively increased and a really good friend of mine did not get in. Said friend would have been enough to have kept me from spiraling into a depression over the next two years and forcing me to drop out of college while I took care of it.

So yeah, Michael Vick can kiss my ass, but Virginia Tech rocks.

At least I’m not the only one here to drop out after two years. Were you there during the massacre?

by Derek Suboticki on May 16, 2009 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope, this was back in 2000-2001. It was a really bad time, wasted 2 years of my life, however I ended up a better person and it was all paid for by scholarships anyway.
