DREAM.10 Welterweight Matchups Set: Jason High vs. Andre Galvao, Hayato Sakurai vs. Marius Zaromskis

Andregalvao_mediumAccording to MMAWeekly, the DREAM 10 Welterweight Grand Prix Semifinal bracket has been set. Sources close to Jason High's camp confirmed that he will, in fact, take on highly-touted Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner Andre Galvao on July 20th:

Jason High will face off with jiu-jitsu ace Andre Galvao at Dream 10 on July 20 at Saitama Super Arena. The news was confirmed Wednesday by a source close to the Affliction veteran.

The eight-man tournament is the second-to-last weight class featured in the promotion’s tournament focus, and will be followed by a "Super Hulk" open weight tournament on May 26 featuring several inherently Japanese match-ups.

With the matchup set, that leaves Croation bruiser Marius Zaromskis taking on Aoki killer Hayato Sakurai.

These are some very interesting matchups, but I have no doubt that it's setting up a Galvao vs. Sakurai finale. High is going to have a very tough time utilizing any of his wrestling ability against Galvao, and Galvao has a surprisingly good standup game coupled with solid power.

Sakurai has a much easier matchup in Zaromskis on paper, although Zaromskis has huge power and dynamic striking ability in utilizing kicks mixed with overhands. Sakurai has a big experience edge, so I'm more inclined to believe he can defeat Zaromskis in the semifinal to move on. A much anticipated showdown between Sakurai and Galvao could make this final one of the books. Sakurai has always been very good at avoiding the submission, but can he escape Galvao? We'll see how DREAM 10 goes down before resorting to those questions.

I take it the final will be held on the same night as the semis?

I give High a good shot at beating Galvao, provided he can utilize his wrestling to keep it on the feet. Zaromskis I don’t think has much of a chance against Sakurai. After watching Zaromskis vs. Che Mills I was surprised that he even made it into the semis.

by Sam Cupitt on May 14, 2009 9:24 AM EDT reply actions

I’m not sure if the final will be held that evening. I would assume so.

I don’t think High beats Galvao anywhere. Galvao’s jiu-jitsu is very, very good. The guy has some absolutely ridiculous power for a grappler, and his standup is above average in comparison to a lot of MMA fighters. I think High’s best chance is to maintain posture in his guard and pound him. Galvao isn’t exactly susceptible to that at all.

Zaromskis has weaknesses in his standup game, albeit he’s dynamic. Sakurai should take full advantage.

Galvao may have good power but its not very technical. He’s a lot like Xande Ribiero in that regard. Further down the road you know he’ll run into someone who can take advantage of his sloppy technique. Whether or not High is that person is another question, but I give him a good chance at it.

by Sam Cupitt on May 14, 2009 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I disagree. I think he’s much better than what Xande has shown. He isn’t by any means unbelievable, but I think Galvao has a much better grasp on striking concepts that Ribeiro. In fact, I caught a bunch of shit for saying I was unimpressed with Xande’s standup, and I stick by that. Galvao’s was much better in my mind.

But...

I’m far from saying High doesn’t have a chance. I just think he’d have a much better chance if he plows through Galvao, and maintains posture to stay outta guard. From there, he needs to pound Galvao.

This is a good opportunity for High

He’s been quietly building a rep in some circles (ie FightMatrix and MMA ELO) for a while now. this is where the rubber meets the road.

Typical Japanese MMA matchmaking. I would rather see a tournament bracket set from the beginning instead of manipulating who fights who each round.

lol ah poor Sakuraba.

The fans decide he faces Tamura in a long awaited bout…. Tamura gets injured and they ship in one of the scariest dudes on the planet to beat the piss out of Sakuraba.

Twas sad.

I support these match ups. Can’t wait for Zaromskis to knee Sakurai’s face in.

Haha.

I highly doubt it. I think Sakurai avoids any lunchbox bombs Marius throws at him, clinches up, tosses him on his ass, and roughs him up. Rinse/ lather/ repeat FT (decision) W.

Affliction veteran? Seeing that makes me giggle…

by Gunslinger20 on May 14, 2009 1:16 PM EDT reply actions

Technically, he is a veteran. I think veteran always is used in the context that he had one fight with the promotion. I find it odd as well though.

Of all the things...

that they could have used to describe Jason High, they had to say “Affliction Veteran”…… at this point, that is like what the dude said in “Waiting”

Yeah man, you’re the coolest guy at Shenanigans….. thats like saying you’re the smartest kid w/ down syndrome..

by Gunslinger20 on May 14, 2009 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Ooooh, I see. I thought you were trying to make an articulate point, but actually you were just trying to bring down Affliction. Good stuff.

by AnonymousA on May 14, 2009 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, I’m bringing down the person who decided to use the verbiage of “Affliction Veteran” considering he’s fought once for Affliction… the verbiage is ridiculous to me.

Anything else you’d like to troll about?

by Gunslinger20 on May 14, 2009 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

So when you said “Yeah man, you’re the coolest guy at Shenanigans….. thats like saying you’re the smartest kid w/ down syndrome..”

You were speaking more of the writer and less of Affliction?

Okay…got it.

by AnonymousA on May 14, 2009 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

When being called a veteran of an organization after only fighting once for them…. or at least for an organization that has only put on 2 events period….. yes, I find it funny and ridiculous at the same time, much like the line “being the smartest kid w/ down syndrome”.

by Gunslinger20 on May 14, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe because thats where he last fought before DREAM, in Affliction, where his highest profile fight against a top 20 WW took place in, perhaps.

by MMASuPreMaCy on May 14, 2009 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

How many events has DREAM done compared to Affliction?

by Gunslinger20 on May 14, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Its a sport thing. If one Japanese guy got called up one game from AAA and made one start for an MLB team, he will be considered an MLB veteran.

Don’t as me why that is.

by MMASuPreMaCy on May 14, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re comparing DREAM to the AAA affiliate for Affliction? Laugh.

by Derek Suboticki on May 14, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

You got the wrong message, apparently.
=)

Point is all you need to do is fight one time for any promotion no matter how long they have been around and you will be dubbed a “so and so veteran”.

by MMASuPreMaCy on May 14, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly, if you only fight once for the UFC, you’re called a UFC veteran. Just because Affliction has two events doesn’t change the fact that they exist.

Veteran is a bit of a silly word, but it is the word we use. Just ctrl+f your brain and find and replace “veteran” and replace it with “competitor”.

by Sam Cupitt on May 14, 2009 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

Competitor is a lot better

by Gunslinger20 on May 15, 2009 7:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Also,

How long a league or promotion has been around has no relevance in using that statement (I know, it sucks).

by MMASuPreMaCy on May 14, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes it does suck

hence whether they choose to quit doing it or not…. I’m gonna make fun of it.

by Gunslinger20 on May 15, 2009 7:37 AM EDT up reply actions

trying to bring down Affliction

Nobody needs to do that, they are doing it wonderfully on their own.

I think he was...

just saying, that considering his stint with Affliction solely comprised of being on the recieving end of a savage beating, it’s ironic that he gets the title ‘Affliction vet.’

And, personally, I love Affliction, but I know it won’t last. I just hope they can put together one more event- Fedor/ Barnett. That’s all I care about at this point; anything else would just be icing on the cake.

I’m guessing you bar yourself from betting on his fights.

by Derek Suboticki on May 14, 2009 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

No, I don’t, but I’m fairly unbiased when it comes to betting. If Manhoef is taking on a high-level grappler, I’m out. Manhoef vs. Sakuraba was easily a Manhoef bet however. Although, I’m not sure there were lines on that fight. Hunt vs. Manhoef didn’t have lines, at least, I didn’t check, but I did bet two buddies that Manhoef would win via KO over Hunt as a little fun wager. $200 win in the bank.

This mean Hellboy gets the WAMMA belt if he beats Aoki?

by Gunslinger20 on May 14, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmm.

Hansen’s #5 on their rankings, and everyone above him is either UFC or Eddie Alvarez, who’s going to Strikeforce after Bellator.
So I’d guess yes.

Their #6 (JZ) is fighting their #8 (Kawajiri) on DREAM.9 and faces the winner of Hansen/Aoki on NYE.

Their #7 is Josh Thomson, who’s on the shelf for a while.

So, given what they have to work with (non-UFC fighters), and using their rankings, the WAMMA belt being on the line would actually make sense in both those fights (Aoki/Hansen and the NYE fight).

Now I’m off to take a toaster bath because I just somehow remotely complimented WAMMA.
