MMA Nation Rewind: Making Amends With Kevin Iole

Mmanation_medium

For those that missed the show this weekend, here's a recap:

I murder Landfill for being incompetent and talk Dana White's E:60 appearance (this aired before the E:60 piece) here.

Frankie Edgar talks training in the gi and preparing for his UFC 98 fight with Sean Sherk.

I formally apologize to Yahoo.com's Kevin Iole for the times I've been a raging asshole to him.

More on the idiocy of Roy Jones, Jr. vs. Anderson Silva here.

And last, but certainly not least, I explain why the fawning over Gina Carano is so utterly nauseating.

NEW TIME SLOT: "MMA Nation" airs every Saturday 7:00pm EST to 9:00pm EST on 106.7 WJFK. To listen live over the Internet, go to WJFK's website and click "Listen Live".

"MMA Nation" is also available by podcast on iTunes.

We're on Facebook, too: type MMA Nation on the search bar in the upper right hand corner. Please become a fan. We want to be on WJFK on Thursday nights and need your support.

really great episode of mma nation!

I loved the rant about Gina Carano and the fanboys at the end, LOL! I feel the same way Luke… I keep saying I’ll call in one of these days… You need more female callers anyway. ;)

I'm the kind of girl who loves to watch a GOOD fight!

One comment in relations to Roy Jones Jr.

This was brought up by the commentators during one of the regional shows on HDNet a while back: a professional boxer is not legally allowed to fight in amatuer MMA.

Plus, when comparing Brock to Roy, I think its fair and not insulting to say that a wrestler transisitoning to MMA is completely different than a a boxer and needs to be treated as such.

Walking straight from a sport and into MMA, I think its safe to say that the order of ease is something along the lines of:

1. Ju Jitsu and other ground fighting martial arts.
2. Wrestling
3. Boxing and other pure striking arts

I'd switch that order

and make wrestling or judo the #1 — the ability to keep the fight standing or force it to the ground is really the key IMO, especially if you’re giving up the edge standing or on the ground.

Wrestling doesn’t finish fights. Its boils down to three things; Position, Subs, and KOs. People associate them with art forms, but its just because one of those dominates the art form. Like BJJ, its a mix of subs and position. Guys that transition well from wrestling to bjj, like eddie bravo, are positional wrestler who survive on technique. Guys like Mark Coleman and Kos are more explosive power wrestlers that dom with takedowns and good hips. Judo has the two very distinct ground and standing arts, but goals are very control based. Guys like GSP and Kenflo really dominate the position battle. They are so overwhelming at gaining and keeping great position that they bring the other fighter into there wheelhouse and can finish the fight or they keep such good position that a finish presents itself. Position in boxing is so much different that it doesn’t translate well. It takes years to learn to have good hips in a wrestling room, but some guys have it naturally. Its hard to say how a specific guy will transition, especially from a big money sport. Roy may have great hips, but they were never going to make him any money. Maybe if he takes up wrestling he will be a natural and have great GSP type control.

Sorry I will stop ranting now and get back to work. Interesting topic for me, but another time another place.

"ride the bus to ponytown"

Please never say this again. It was a bit creepy.

But fantastic closing segment.

The way you protest NERD NERD NERD sounds like you really want to let everyone know you are not a nerd anymore.

Nice try.

Why the apology?

Why are you apologizing to Iole? I agree with everything you said about him. Can you give the Cliff Notes version of your reasoning?

by cyke on May 13, 2009 11:05 PM EDT reply actions

Good question

I’m not apologizing for times when I’ve disagreed with him or for the reality that he’s uncomfortably close to Dana White/UFC. I’m apologizing for the times when I was unprofessional, mean spirited and nasty. The reality is I can make all of the claims against Iole, McNeil or whoever without resorting to juvenile, petulant language.

Iole has his faults like everyone else, but he doesn’t deserve to be talked to in some of the ways I have talked to him.

So, I’m not apologizing for any of my ideas or my criticisms of him, just some of the ways I’ve delivered them over the years. I think it’s the right thing to do and I owed it to him.

It sounds like a Howard Stern ripoff. I love the show but it comes off as kind of lame.
