Paulo Filho on Training With Wanderlei Silva and his Light Heavyweight Debut

Paulo Filho was on the top of the world. He went undefeated in 16 fights and won the WEC middleweight title in the process, but personal issues led to his first loss and his contract being cut. Now, Paulo says that he has recovered well and plans to fight soon at Light heavyweight. He spoke on the May issue of Tatame Magazine,

On his next fight and his possible opponents:

1237920762

I still don’t know whether my return will take place at DREAM 9 or in June because it has been too difficult to find an opponent. It looks like in May but up to June I will be breaking down at 205lbs.

...Mousasi beat Ronald Jacaré luckily. Jacaré would win nine of ten fights against him. Sokoudjou is smart but after five minutes of fight he gets tired and gives up. He is from Judo but didn’t learn the rules of vale tudo yet. I’m only worried about showing that I’m OK, strong and waiting for the moment to show that I am back.

On being undersized at light heavyweight:

This is bullshit. Mike Tyson was the best and he was short. In soccer, Maradona and Romario were short as well.

I hate to face guys of the same height. I prefer to take tall opponents with holes in the game so that it is easier to set a hit. It’s each one to his own but I don’t feel bothered at all.

On accepting Wanderlei's offer to train in Vegas:

It is an honour to arrive in a place to fight and have Wanderlei to train, Forrest Griffin, Heath Herring… I feel very glad for having received this invitation. There’s nobody who is so good that hasn’t nothing to learn or teach.

It’s going to be a pleasure because I have so much to add to him and he to me. Wanderlei doesn’t need comments. There’s nothing to say about him as athlete. He is spectacular, a pioneer who carried our flag (Brazilian) for a long time. What he needs from me, I am ready to give.

I think this is the globalization. Brazilians have to unite, exchange information and finish the rivalry. The sport reached a level in which it doesn’t fit any longer. Adversary trains with adversary.

That's exactly what i was thinking.

Regardless of what he says, he’s going to be ridiculously undersized at 205. He can jack up all the weights he wants to; guys will still have a good 6 inches over him, on average. Filho also wasn’t extremely shredded at MW, anyway. Solid? Yes, but he wasn’t cut to ribbons at the weigh in like many guys are.

The weird thing about him moving up to 205 is that when Sonnen was beating him in the first match before the armbar, and outpointed him in the second, he did it by using his reach advantage, and wrestling ability. At LHW (a division chock full of lengthy strikers with good takedown defense), guys will just continue to do that.

Who knows, though? Maybe he could become the LHW Monson.

I read this...

Amazingly he is also engaged now….. don’t know how that woman can put up with his shenanigans…. but she must be a saint or even more whacked out than him.

Not sure if this is a genuine act of maturity or just one of his other personalities…. but maybe Paulo Filho is cleaning his act up which benefits all of us, he’s a great talent.

Arona’s response to Wanderlei’s invitation was classic as well…

Chuck Liddell wants some of that super-strength Nyquil Paulo Filho uses.

Isnt this kind of strange because I have always read about how good of friend he and Anderson Silva were?

Last I heard...

he’s left Black House.

Not to say that he isn’t still buddies with Anderson, but I really don’t even think that Wanderlei and Anderson are very heated at this point in time.
