Houston Alexander Rescues Child

This is a day old but it deserves a nod.  It's always nice to see a positive story about a fighter make the news and not a high speed chase or whatever.  From WWOT:

An Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight from Omaha discovered a child left alone in an unlocked car, and sprang into action. Houston Alexander, a mixed martial artist stayed with the girl until she was safe.

...

He took the girl into a nearby dialysis center, but no one there knew who she was. Alexander then took the girl into the plasma center next door.

The girl's mother was there, giving plasma. She told officers her cousin should have been watching the little girl.

The thing about Houston is that I've heard so many people say SO many good things about him.  We all know the stories about what he did for his kid, but I've always seen him talked about as a guy who gives plenty of time to the fans, especially kids.  It's probably the biggest reason I'd like to see him get a few tailor made fights and wins in the UFC.  I'd be hard pressed to name someone I want to see succeed more than Houston Alexander.

He seriously seems to be one of the best people in the sport (I don’t mean in ability, but “goodness”). I really wish he could be top or even mid-tier competition. Great look, strong, good guy.

I love this story. He is such a good guy – I really wish he learned at the very least a takedown defense.

However, if anyone feels like punching a wall, go to Cagewriter and read the comments.

Apparently Alexander should be arrested for kidnapping and shot.

Agreed...

We saw him in Columbus and a friend of ours couldn’t make the fight because of an illness in the family. Houston got on the phone and talked to him for a few minutes and then asked him to follow up with him about how his relative was doing.
Quite literally seems to be one of the best people I’ve ever met and I will always root for him to become as good a fighter as he is a person.

At USC we're not snobs, we're just better than you.

that’s really cool. everything i hear about the guy confirms he’s a class act. we need more fighters who act like that outside the ring.

Props to Houston. Great story.

Houston Alexander = The Man

I promise to try very hard not to make fun of the shape of his head in the future.

Amazing guy…

but easy with the “tailor made fights” comment. the quintessential part of the UFC is the lack, or very-near-lack, of tailor made fights. He can get those in japan if the fans want to see a good guy actually finish first.

Well...

maybe I should say “stop matching a guy with very limited ground skills that you want to see succeed against BJJ black belts”

I believe the use of the word ‘rescue’ has been stretched quite thin in this instance.
Take nothing away from Houston’s good deed though.

I really hope this kid doesn’t end up in a foster home over this. Seems like a small thing to lose your family over

Houston is a star in the making

Train him in jiu-jitsu. Give him a few standup fights while he’s learning. But his personal story, and highlight-reel knockouts, could make this man a very marketable star.

Thanks to Brent for sharing this story and reminding me why I’m in Houston’s corner.

He’s 37. He may be too late in his career to develop into a well rounded fighter

by Flyghtt on May 13, 2009 7:15 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree. I think he’s shown that he really hasn’t learned anything on the ground. Now, I don’t know if its his trainers fault or his own, but he still has his uses. People like to see KO’s. Give him a chance to KO someone. He’ll never get a title shot, but he can still entertain.

Even after suffering one of the quickest KO losses in UFC history to James Irvin, he was still in good spirits and talked to people and signed autographs after the fight…. he may never be an elite fighter in the history of the UFC but he is definitely a real “people’s champion”. This sort of act is no surprise to me when it comes to Houston Alexander, great story.

Nice story.

Its always good to hear that someone who is in a career of fighting still being a genuinely good human being.

He is a really nice person, I also had the pleasure to meet him when they were in Columbus, Ohio for 96. He seemed really down to earth and also it was at a pre party at a bar so there were drunk people pestering the crap out of him all night. He spoke with everyone and was nothing short of classy all night.

idk the story of what he did for his kid?

Basically his daughter needed a kidney so Houston donated one of his (hence the scar on his abdomen). And while this is something you’d expect from more or less any parent it’s still a nice story and shows that he is a great guy. He’s also a single father with 6 kids.

Houston may not be the greatest fighter ever, but he is exciting and trying to improve his weaknesses.

This is a good story and exactly what I would expect from him. The thing is, many people would just pass by a situation like this and not get involved. I usually root for him and he keeps doing the things that make me want to see him succeed.

When he fought at the UFN in Denver (Broomfield), he was by far, one of teh two most popular fighters (with Guida), despite being from Nebraska. I can’t remember the last time someone wearing a Cornhusker hat was cheered in Colorado.

If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.

by BJJDenver on May 13, 2009 10:55 AM EDT reply actions

That's the thing...

when people clamor for him to get cut, they ignore the fact that he is VERY popular. He’s kind of the modern Tank Abbott. He is limited, but has tremendous power, and people love to watch him. It’s hard to cut a guy like that.

Yeah man. Especially after stories like this. I like Houston a lot. I just wish he’d learn a sweep or two to get back to his feet. The UFC really needs to set him up with someone like Brian Stann. I think that would be a great fight.

Am I the only one that thinks this sounds a bit hokey.
I mean the lady wasn’t in the liquor store or buying crack. The kid was probably being a brat.

I come from a world...

where you don’t leave a kid in the car. It’s not like it’s not known that it’s a crime to do it. That’s just where I’m at though.

I think it’s known that you don’t leave a kid in the car by themselves. The door was even unlocked. Who knows what could have happened.

The kid was crying IN the car. Not walking aimlessly, middle of the night, tattered clothes matted hair and bruises. I’m simply saying, let’s not go handing out the key to the city. I like Houston Alexander, he’s probably a good father, I’m convinced his intentions are noble, but this is a little Fox Newzish.

“You don’t leave a kid in the car by themselves,end/”
I just think the word “rescue” is a little overblown. When I read this article 4 days ago I had the same questions. I’m not saying it’s alright to leave a kid in the car.

by bubbafat on May 13, 2009 2:08 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think the word usage was very good in this instance, but leaving a kid in a car, especially someplace hot and humid, is verrrry dangerous. Like I said above, most people would just walk on by a situation like this and think little of it. i think this is as much an example of Houston’s parenting instinct as it is of being a hero. It doesn’t take very long for a child to suffer damage in an instance like this, btw.

If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.

by BJJDenver on May 13, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

That kid could’ve been nabbed by any transient that happened to walk by the car. Houston rescued that kid.
