Quote of the Day: Matt Hughes Talks Matt Serra at UFC 98
Of course I've learned from his one-hit wonder on GSP that he's a big slugger. But I think it will go my way and my wife tells me that I will go all three rounds and he will be a bloody mess when I get done.
Matt Hughes talks to the Fight Network about Matt Serra.

for some reason
when Hughes talks about Serra KO’ing GSP I get a vision of him and Sean Sherk celebrating afterwards.
"the spirit of your average dumbass with more overblown rhetoric" OR "the self-appointed savior of MMA"
yeah…same here.
classic gif where he’s saying “I love it”….looking a little feminine.

His wife some kind of fortune teller or something?
lol
Mike Goldberg: "You know Joe, When Matt and his brother Mark Hughes were growing up, they would pound each other behind the barn."
He often brings up things his wife says…..think he has one of those “I love my wife” bumper stickers?
LMAO! Thats funny, dudes checkin out a chick with his kid on his head. “I love it! I LOVE IT!!!”

Really
What is it with him and reporting all the shit his wife is talking?
Although detractors decry (MMA) as a brutal, bloody form of human cockfighting, aficionados know it is a brutal, bloody, totally fucking awesome form of human cockfighting. -The Onion

I think...
Matt is trying to remind people he is a family man, and come across less arrogant than his normal self. lol
I cannot wait for this fight...
I love the fights where there is bad blood….. I’d love to see how Matt Serra can pull it off if he does win.
Same
Hope we get some good smack talk at the weigh-ins :)

File this fight under "WTF do I care about this meaningless fight" fights.
I predict Serra def. Hughes via 1st round submission. I don’t care what Hughes’ wife says.
"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"
It may not be a bout that carries any real "meaning"
but its gonna be fun as hell to watch.
Watching Matt Serra fight is like watching midgets run track…. he only makes it better when he talks shit.

This fight is far from meaningless. If Hughes wins, he’s officially still in the mix because he just beat the last WW champ. Don’t forget that the Hughes’ recent losses, for which many have been saying he should retire, came to the #1 and #2 WW’s in the world. Hughes can prove he’s still relevant with a win here. A loss will likely bring about further talk of his retirement.
If Serra wins, he is also right back in the mix. I don’t see why Serra wouldn’t be only 1 or 2 more fights away from another title shot if he is able to finish Hughes in dramatic fashion here. If Serra loses to Hughes, the fact that he would have only fought twice and lost both times since his win over GSP over two years ago will probably send him tumbling down the WW ladder.
When you think about it, this fight is far from meaningless. Both of these guys have a lot at stake here.
Further from meaningful than from meaningless for sure.
IMO Neither of these guys will ever be considered “in the mix” again. If Hughes beats Serra it is no great accomplishment regardless if Serra was the last WW champ. If Serra beats Hughes he is still Matt Serra with no chance of ever retaining the belt. Look beyond the paperwork on these fighters and see who they really are and you should come to the conclusion that this fight is nothing more than a belated grudge match between two fighters at the end of their careers.
"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"
Speaking Hughes vs. Serra:
Here’s my cheap plug:

Meaningless fight?
How is this a meaningless fight? Does that mean that all welterweight fights that don’t involve GSP are pointless? People have paid a lot of money for fights with Hughes and Serra in them, wouldn’t it make sense that we would want to see them go toe to toe? I am all for the idea that GSP is a way better fighter than Serra, but let’s give the guy some credit, he’s not the only person to get a fast track to a title shot through TUF (he just got the really fast track).

Agreed.
If this fight is meaningless, then pretty much any non-title fight or clear #1 contenders fights in a weight class are meaningless.
by Hardcharger on May 12, 2009 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions
Wait what?
This fight is meaningful to you because people have paid a lot of money for fights with Hughes and Serra in them in the past?
"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"
Hughes won't try to finish the fight?
“I will go all three rounds and he will be a bloody mess when I get done.”
As much as I am looking forward to this fight, I am a little perturbed that Hughes continually states that he intends to win the fight but does not intend to finish it. I think he basically going to try to do exactly what Brock Lesnar did to Heath Herring, which is continually take Serra down, stay on top of him and grind him down with punches and hammerfists, but never really try anything too risky where he might make a mistake that a BJJ guy like Serra could easily capitalize on. This is why Hughes has been doing a ton of weightlifting for this weight. He is once again going to use his strength to impose his will. I just hope we don’t see 15 minutes of Lay n’ Pray like Hughes vs. Lytle.
Any of you guys with wives out there learn from Hughes. They love when their opinions are brought up in discussions they have no business in. Saying this will probably keep her off his ass and happy for a while
