Quote of the Day: Sean Sherk Talks Diego Sanchez, Title Hopes

3521446055_8fb81a1f0b_medium

Sean Sherk: You know, Diego always look tough. That’s why I want to fight him. He was a top guy at 170 for a long time. He looks good every time, including his most recent win against Joe. It was a good first fight to introduce him to the lightweight division, I think. It’s funny because some people took it as disrespectful that I mentioned him as an opponent, but I asked to fight him out of respect for him. We’re both great fighters and I think a fight between us would be exciting.

Rich Wyatt: Diego has gone on the record saying that he's been given word that he'll earn a title shot with a dominating win over Clay Guida at the TUF 9 Finale.  As the former lightweight champion and given the fact that your only loss at lightweight has come against the current champion, how do you feel about that statement?

Sean Sherk: Well, I would hope I’d be closer in line. I’m the former champion and have looked good lately. I would hope I’d be closer in line. If I beat Frankie, I’m not sure where that leaves me. I only want to fight the best, you know? I’m a guy who wants to challenge myself. I’ve got no interest in fighting pretenders. I’ve been in this industry for 10 years. I only want tho fight the best. That’s what gets me out of bed every day and makes me want to train. I’d like to fight either the winner of the Penn-Florian fight or the winner of Guida-Sanchez.

It sucks...

because I don’t see Sherk ever beating BJ, but he’s a bitch for anyone else in the division. So what do you do with him? Just let him knock contenders off and every now and then get beat up by BJ?

A rematch with BJ

might not be as bad as you think.

Considering the holes in BJ’s game that the GSP fight exposed, there might be some smart contenders able to take advantage of what there was to learn from that fight. I think Sherk could be one of them.

Regardless, if you tossed out fighters who didn’t have a real chance of beating the champ at their weightclass, then you’d need to empty both the MW and WW and possibly LW in the UFC right now.

I agree on this point. I think Sherk fought a really stupid fight against BJ the first time, by neglecting his strongest asset, and arguably one of BJ’s weakest: Wrestling. Yeah, BJ has great take down defence, but that’s usually only for as long as his cardio lasts. A non-stop guy like Sherk with the wrestling that he has could eventually get BJ to the ground and try to GnP him, or at least win on points. But then again, that’s what I thought last time and Sherk had a stupid game plan. I don’t know if he’s learned from his mistake, but if Sherk tries to box BJ again, he’ll lose. He needs to go back to his bread and butter.

I was rooting for Sherk in that fight and I can’t tell you how many times I screamed “SHOOT!” at the screen.

To avoid rematches when there are other intriguing fights, I’d have Sanchez fight Penn if both Diego and BJ win their next fights, and find Sherk an opponent in the meantime.

If Florian and Sherk win, I’d have that rematch next, and find Diego someone to fight in the meantime (if he beats Guida).

Maybe if Sherk had an exciting fight once it would be different. We know how reluctant Dana White is to give boring fighters title shots…Okami, Machida.

Isn’t Machida fighting for a title this month?

Yeah, but that doesn’t fit the narrative.

You don’t think his fights against Penn or Griffin were exciting?

I thought the Penn fight was kinda crappy.

The sherk vs griffin fight was awesome. Correct me if im wrong but didn’t that get fight of the night? his boxing is coming around

They have to make fights.....

If BJ wins, then Diego gets a shot. If Florian wins, they let Sherk have a shot. They will build up that rematch, with Kenny now being the champ, there’d be a story line to sell there.

by Dexerion on May 11, 2009 3:59 PM EDT reply actions

True, but if Kenny beats BJ and both Sherk and Diego win their fights, i would be more inclined to believe that the UFC would push for a Kenny v Diego rematch before one with Sherk.
