Just Because DREAM Announces a Fight Doesn't Mean It Is Signed; Ask Jose Canseco
Jake Rossen caught this little detail:
The Globe and Mail quotes Jose Canseco's manager, Dennis Holahan, as saying Dream might have jumped the gun a bit in announcing the excommunicated baseball star's ring appearance against Hong-Man Choi on May 26.
"It probably won't be a sure thing for another week or 10 days," Holahan said.
I couldn't find that quote at the link Jake cites but I'm not surprised at all to hear that DREAM is once again announcing fights they haven't signed.
Since Jose is infamously desperate for money, I expect this fight to be signed, but just want to remind my fellow fanboys that some promoters blow more smoke than others.

If this fight does happen does anyone have any idea of how Canseco could win? Does he have any BJJ or Muay Thai training?

watch his celebrity boxing match with Danny Bonaduce
I regret not paying close attention but I certainly wasn’t impressed with his performance.

Here’s a way…
Watch Ray Sefo vs. Hong Man Choi, the last matchup they had.
Sefo literally runs haymakers dead center into Choi’s face, and Choi is too slow to do anything.

Pretty sure Ray Sefo wouldn’t get KTFO’d in a slugfest with Via Sikahema though. Canseco also claim he didn’t train for that fight. Hope he doesn’t pull the same against Choi.

Yeah, when 7 out of 8 guys at a press conference are cardboard cutouts, you’ve gotta assume the fights aren’t set in stone just yet.

16 man? or 8? I hear talk of this being expanded to a 16 man torney. Its already going to be two events, why not add Chuck Norris, Zuluzinho, Butterbean, Akebono, Kimbo, Royce Gracie, Don Frye, and Dolph Lundgren.
But i figure if they announced Canseco without signing the fight then 16 is no chance.

Timestamp, and edited article
I saw an earlier version of the Globe and Mail article that quoted Cansenco’s manager as saying that he was fine with DREAM announcing the fight, even though the deal wasn’t 100% finalized.
If you notice, the Sherdog blog article was first posted at 7:30PM EST, quoting the original article.
Later, the Globe and Mail article was revised at 8:37PM EST to represent a more dire tone, adding the quote about money, won’t know for 10 days, etc.
But I read the original article, and it wasn’t as negative as this one. Like I said, Cansenco’s manager was quoted as saying he was fine with DREAM announcing the fight.
So really, this is more of an issue with the original source, than with DREAM.

I think it is DREAM’s fault. I think they purposely do this in order to:
A.) Make a guy feel guilty in some way <—- doubt the fighter cares
B.) Create some hype, convince the guy to sign
C.) See what kind of interest is out there for a specific bout

Japan also does a lot of verbal agreements that cause problems due to the communication barrier. They are not into contracts as much as here in the US.

Okay, but it’s also usually the case that the fight announced is the exact fight that happens. I.E. Sakuraba being in MWGP, which everyone doubted, or Aoki in LWGP 2nd Round, which everyone doubted.
I think it’s just a matter of people taking the story that they want and running with it.
Look at my comment above this one. Jake Rossen could have quoted Cansenco’s manager as saying that he was fine with DREAM announcing the fight, but instead he chose to run the angle that fit his perspective for his article. Then the original source followed suit.
So, Kid Nate has shown in the past his interest in bring out all of the negative aspects in DREAM. See: Fed Up With DREAM (and notice how the article about Sakuraba not being in the tournament has been 404’d. And of course, this story comes out this way, and we will get the negative DREAM perspective on it.

Maybe a little bit, but DREAM takes way more shit than any other organization.
I remember when Sakuraba was fucking arond in interviews and said that he wouldn’t participate in the MWGP, and BE and other blogs brought DREAM through the muck because of it, but then didn’t recant their bullshit after Sakuraba did fight.
Same thing with Aoki in the second round of the LWGP. I remember there was a quote before his fight with JZ that he didn’t intend to continue on with the GP, and the blogs were up in arms with how stupid DREAM was for including him in the GP.
So, if Canseco does fight in the GP will we hear people revise their statements, and back off of the negative comments?
No, because the impression will already be laid. Pretty ridiculous.
by AnonymousA on May 1, 2009 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Even if they do get the fight signed, it is valid to get pissy when they are announcing fights as official that haven’t been signed. There is no need to back off anything. In fact, announcing the fight strengthens Canseco’s position in money talks so I am sure he welcomes it. And the Saku and Aoki stuff may also have been about money.
by szucconi on May 1, 2009 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wait if a fighter says something about not fighting and people comment about it then the fighter decides he will fight that doesn’t mean that there is anything at all for bloggers to recant because it was based on what the fighter said to start with. The fact that there is so much conflicting information is a sign that Dream really does need to get their act together not that fans need to apologize for actually taking things fighters and orgs say seriously.
by who me on May 1, 2009 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No.
In Sakuraba’s case it was Sakuraba being Sakuraba, I.E. absurdist, ironic humor.
In Aoki’s case is was a poor translation from “I’m focusing on JZ and nothing thinking about Nagata in the second round” to “I’m focusing JZ and not fight Nagata in the seocnd round.”
by AnonymousA on May 1, 2009 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Which still doesn’t show me any reason why fans or bloggers should apologize for anything. You seem to be a bit overly touchy on the subject, hell this is a column about freaken Jose Canseco fighting HMC the whole thing is a big joke to start with.

People are reading this article now, and saying, “Wow! DREAM is a joke!”
And then when the fight happens, those same people will hold onto that opinion, even though it was an unfounded one, and it creates an overly negative view of DREAM when it is undeserved.
Just sayin’.
by AnonymousA on May 1, 2009 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
People are saying Dream is a joke because they are booking a tournament that includes a fight with Jose Canseco. It was a freaken press conference with Minowa and a bunch of old cardboard cutouts if people weren’t saying Dream is a joke when they see that then there would be something wrong. An article saying that they don’t have Canseco locked into a contract yet is just a tiny blip on the SUPER HULK radar.
by who me on May 1, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, assuming that only one fighter in the tournament lives and trains in Japan and the others are from Europe and America it makes perfect sense that they weren’t on the press conference which is taking place a month before the event. It’s common logic but…
by jinsoku on May 1, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Also, instead of saying “Hey we are going to have Jose Canseco fighting HMC” they used a cardboard cutout of Canseco from a long time ago in an Oakland A’s uniform and in a batting stance. Common logic indeed.
by szucconi on May 1, 2009 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And? It’s not the first time when they make a cartboard cutouts of fighters which couldn’t make it on the press conference.
by jinsoku on May 1, 2009 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think they ran out of cardboard when they made Nortje and had to get the Canseco one off ebay. None the less, it’s pretty wacky to have cutouts and it’s very wacky to see Minowa choke one.
by szucconi on May 1, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And using cardboard cutouts for a press conference is hilarious in any situation but particularly when they actually have a live guy fighting with one of them.
by who me on May 1, 2009 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If this doesn’t make you laugh you got problems.
Common logic would lead me to believe that they would either fly the guys there for the press conference Affliction style or that they would just announce the fighters without first running to the Japanese version of Spencer’s gifts to get giant cardboard cutouts. The joke is that they used cardboard cutouts for a press conference. At least they didn’t pretend mike the cardboard cut outs up to answer questions about the fights I guess althought that really would of been a gut buster.
by who me on May 1, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s not up to what you think they should or shouldn’t do. There’s not the first time they did this kind of stuff. It wasn’t made for some people overseas to bitch about but for japanese reporters who attended the press. Obviously this wasn’t a joke to them cause they’re used to it. You think that FEG would care about an overseas fan who will not rise their ratings on TBS nor buy the ticket and attend their event live complaining about some cartoon cutboards? Yes, it makes me laugh seeing Minowaman choking a cartoon Bob Sapp and it also made the reporters laugh when they saw it. But the truth is that it’s logic having your fighters training and preparing fot the fights and not flying them over here to Japan, having them experience another jetlag and interrupting their training camp just for some press which lasted no longer than 2 hours.
by jinsoku on May 1, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I gave up halfway thought that when I saw that you were actually taking this seriously. I don’t care if they don’t care if I laugh at their silly stuff because I am pointing and laughing for my own amusement. I know why they do it and I know that this is 100% for the Japanese market but I also know that shit is funny and people looking at if from the outside are obviously going to think it’s a joke. Don’t whine or complain about people on websites thinking it’s silly when Dream doesn’t care what we think and that that shit really is funny.
It’s a freakshow tournament for entertainment purposes only even Dream knows it’s not to be taken seriously as a sport, there is no reason for people to be trying to defend Dream here because Dream doesn’t need defending on this issue. I mean people do understand we are talking about Jose Canseco fighting HMC in a “SUPER HULK” tournament right?

No one every said it was anything other than a fun tournament.
That being said, I take exception to people calling it a “freakshow” tournament, or something like that.
Not only is that dismissive of the hard work that each fighter will put into training for their fights, but it is blatantly disrespectful to everyone involved. I’m sure Hong Man Choi doesn’t wake up in the morning before hitting the bags and think, “Wow, I am such a freakshow! People will laugh hysterically when I fight!”
Just simple respect.
by AnonymousA on May 1, 2009 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
In Japan freakshow doesn’t have to mean disrespect hell Pride made it a artform. I’m not dismissing the work guys will put into it but I refuse to give any legitimacy to the booking. You have 181lb Minowa fighting 375lb Bob Sapp and Hong Man Choi fighting a retired pro baseball player I’m not sure how you would describe that booking besides “freakshow”.
by who me on May 1, 2009 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
well, you are going to be taking exception with alot of people then. it is meant to be viewed as a freakshow or a circus act. if this bothers you, then you are way to sensitive. to each his or her own. i’ll wait and and see which fights are reported to be worth watching and catch them later on the net.
by bdw on May 1, 2009 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, my only point is that having on a press conference which takes place a month before the actual event cartoon cutboards of fighters who will participate doesn’t mean that nothing is already signed and it’s logical that they aren’t bringing them cause what’s the point for it? Interrupt their training just because it would be good to some people to see the fighters there in person? Really, flying on example from Netherlands to Japan only to talk with some reporters for 20 minutes and spend 1,5 hour sitting and pretending to be hearing what Sasahara is saying, cause in no way those fighters know japanese, it’s just silly and completely dumb for me. But whatever.
The point for those cutboards was that they wanted to show the parameters of the fighters participating. It’s an open-weight tournament and obviously the difference between the heights and weights of the participants is a big factor for the people who will watch it only for entertainment. Also, here nobody cares about Canseco nor one knows who he is. Showing that he is a former baseball player makes some sense seeing how baseball is popular in Japan. Though personally, I couldn’t care less.
The funny thing is that japanese culture is often an object of jokes and disrespect from other nations. The irony is the hardcore fans here couldn’t care less about the Super Hulk Tournament. Moreover to show you in America a better picture of it, even on 2chan which is full of dumb fucks and retards and you could compare it to sherdog forums, most people aren’t interested and are bitching about those fights. For one positive response you have five negative ones. Doesn’t it interest you why hardcore japanese fans have no interest in this tournament but hardcore foreigner fans are somewhat excited? Also, the people who here like those freakshows are the generic people who like to be entertained and know nothing about mma. Is USA so different when a Kimbo Slice fight on CBS is having highest ratings in the history of american mma? I’m in no way trying to criticize (however it could look different some times) but just wanting a reasonable approach from some of you who never went to Japan and probably will never go there either but are trying to act like they know everything about it. You want to complain about Jose Canseco? Yeah, no problem cause not only you are doing this and it’s the same case with mma fans in Japan but to complain about cartoon cutboards? Seriously, is this really a big problem for you?
by jinsoku on May 2, 2009 4:34 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No you were trying to explain to me why Japan is different than the US and how they don’t care what I think, which is fine because I’m not trying to say anything bad about them I am laughing at their blatantly humorous tournament.
Oh and it’s not a big problem for me at all what I can’t figure out is why it’s such a big problem for anyone else that people laugh at this stuff? Seriously why are you trying to defend giant cardboard cutouts? I don’t care if they did it at the White House people are going to point and laugh at giant cardboard cut outs because that shit is funny. Lord people are so touchy about Dream for some reason.

Also,
Just to make it CLEAR to everyone…KIMBO was supposed to be fighting in this tournament, but apparently, he declined and I guess DREAM got Jose Canseco.
If you all notice, they got people to represent different parts of the world to make this a global super hulk tournament. Canseco was only notified a few weeks ago while K-1 has been negotiating with Kimbo for a while already.
I am not sure whether Strikeforce had some problems with it, Kimbo didn’t want to take another huge loss, Kimbo wanted a huge purse, or (most likely) he may not be as interested with MMA anymore.

It’s not up to FEG to decide. The guys there on TBS have always the last word and they say “yes” or “no go” to all the fights Ishii and Tanigawa come up with. More so, all the TV stations in Japan wouldn’t show on their broadcasting a guy who in their eyes might be perceived as an yakuza. Obviously Markus Öberg didn’t even think about it when he made his tattoos and it’s too bad to him that he isn’t popular as a fighter. A guy like Canseco (even if his tattoos are real) is not only a known american personality but also his tatts only look like yakuza ones; in reality they are extremely shitty ones and none sane yakuza would made himself something like this.

This is what promoters do to pressure fighters into signing. Plus it gives them a bump in publicity even if the fight doesn’t get signed.
Obviously, these tactics work better against actual fighters that can’t have people saying that you are ducking guys. Canseco is just a celebrity that needs money.
