Bellator avoids setbacks, but major flaws in format could hurt
According to MMAJunkie's report yesterday, all of the six tournament format winners were cleared of medical suspension by the Florida Boxing Commission following their April 3rd event from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Nick Agallar, Ben Greer, and Daniel Sarafian all received 30-day suspensions, but all were defeated during the inaugural event.
One of the concerns growing out of these results is the probability that Bellator will suffer the loss of one of their major stars. Most fans chalk this up to poor planning by Bellator, and a misunderstanding in the actual guidelines set forth by various athletic commissions. Can Bellator continue to get "lucky" and maintain most of their tournament winners without any medical suspensions? It's unlikely.
Bellator's schedule is very problematic in avoiding this problem. From April 3rd to June 19th, Bellator will hold an event every Friday, which will air on ESPN Deportes every Saturday on tape-delay. The winners from the April 3rd card are scheduled to be back in the cage on April 24th, only a 3 week layoff.
At that rate, a winning fighter wouldn't be able to compete in the next round with even a minor 30 day medical suspension. Furthermore, the second and third round matchups will likely be tougher matchups for each fighter. We can't expect solid, clean 1st round knockouts in each matchup, and decision battles could claim one of the bracket winners.
The only help that Bellator has built into their framework is the fact that they have yet to schedule all the events and venues out to June 19th, so there is room for the promotion to push the schedule back if need be.
Since the promotion is running Featherweight, Lightweight, & Welterweight tournaments in the next few weeks, there is a little bit of leg room for the promotion to push, but will they push entire events back in order to preserve the winniers of the tournament. I think they should. After all, the drawing power for Bellator is in names like Alvarez and Masvidal. If they are put down due to medical suspension, it'd be unwise to bring in alternates to take their place.
This Friday will feature finish the featherweight division's opening bracket, some lightweight opening round matchups, and the start of the Welterweight tournament. The event will take place in Uncasville, Connecticut from the Mohegan Sun.

Excellent stuff, Leland.
I hope everything goes well for Bellator, but really…you’re right, I just can’t see how this will work out, considering the proximity of events.

One bout going the distance in which both guys take massive damage in the striking department will equal the winner likely getting a minor 30 day suspension, which would result in the event having to be pushed back. They aren’t going to replace the winner, that seems ridiculous

You just can’t run MMA events on a tv schedule, eventually that’s going to bite them in the ass.

Is it possible to challenge a medical suspension? I mean, many of them appear to be precautionary so I wonder if 20 days into a 30 day suspension a fighter could get checked out and be cleared to fight.

I doub it considering their defense would simply be that they are protecting fighters’ health and reducing potential risks down the road.

45 and 60 day suspensions are not all that uncommon either, heck a guy with a deep cut can screw up their whole tournament.
