I’m sorry, do you only respect people who write books on MMA? Because it seems like every other comment you make on here is some veiled criticism of what the staff here does. If you have such a holier-than-thou attitude towards everyone here why do you keep coming back? I wish you had started posting here before I bought your book, I coulda saved myself $14.

One more thing I meant to add
The first couple times you made comments about this being a copy and paste blog or whatever you said to get that point across it was kind of funny and clever, about the 9th or 10th time it just got annoying. I don’t mean to speak for the staff here but they aren’t trying to be Sherdog or MMA Junkie or any of those other sites that want to be stuck up pricks (and thank god for that), they do what they do and they do it very well. Maybe that’s not everyone’s cup of tea, and if it’s not yours that’s fine, but if it isn’t why do you feel the need to come here and shit on them every day? I would think a big time important writer like yourself would have better things to do with their time.
by ufc4 on Apr 9, 2009 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’ve said almost nothing about this being a copy and paste site. But if you are a blog, embrace it. Why is it always a negative thing? Why such insecurity? This IS a blog. It does borrow content from other sites as a way to kick off a conversation. This is what blogs do. Look at Gawker Media. Some, like Deadspin, have similar formats to this site, where almost every article is riffing off someone else’s original work. Others, like io9.com, have a ton of original content too.
I don’t understand why everytime I disagree with someone here it becomes such a big us vs. them thing? If I disagree that Stephan Bonnar isn’t a good comparison for Carlos Newton, that is just me disagreeing with Brent. It isn’t a condemnation of blogdom. For people so quick to take on everyone else in the media and MMA community, I’ve noticed the commenters here are among the most sensitive and quick to anger on the entire internet. Just relax. People are allowed to have different opinions.
Also, I don’t think I’ve mentioned my book here at all. I don’t use it as a crutch to validate my opinions. Sometimes, my opinion is as wrong as anybody else’s. I thought there was freedom here to express those opinions. I guess just things that the regular commenters have embraced in the BE echo chamber?

You’ve mentioned your book in response to a question about it, but not in a plugging sort of sense. And no, you’re not free to post an opinion with no response. You contribute to WAMMA, we hate WAMMA, therefore we treat you with a certain amount of caution – and your pattern of a) making fun of the site for not using 100% original material (a laughable criticism, seeing as how it’s a blog and everything) and b) talking shit on the original material they do provide isn’t helping.

I haven’t criticized the site for being a blog. I love blogs! I just hope to add a lone voice out there encouraging the esteemed contributors here to make this a better blog. What you see as talking shit, I see as offering a different perspective. Sorry if that is hurtful…

Considering most everyone (staff and commentators alike) have a general view of how you come off with regards to our site, you should really consider checking yourself. You may not think you’re talking shit or being abrasive, but the general tone of your posts comes off as very stand-offish. I mean, just consider the comment threads that have been taken off topic in the past week or two that you’re involved with.

In my mind
this is the best mma blog there is. No offense I was a recent visitor of 5ozs before and I just find it boring nowadays.
If your opinion is that this isn’t a “great” MMA blog then your entitled to your opinion. Just bear in mind that people don’t agree with you.
And people don’t disagree with what you say because of any other reason other than simply they disagree with your opinion. BE has always been about contrasting opinions and everyone comments on everyone elses posts. Just as you’re entitled to your opinion, other members of the community are entitled to shoot you down in any (reasonable) way they want.

And for the record...
Here’s where his problem with the staff here stems from:
http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2009/4/3/821533/ufc-learns-wrong-lesson-from#13672551
What aren’t you following? sackingmikegoldberg.com wrote an anonymous hatchetjob on an article I wrote for fiveouncesofpain.com. I see now that sackingmikegoldberg.com is run by a writer for bloodyelbow.com. I’m just happy to know who wrote the article, as a man should be able to face his accusers. :)
So the reason he dislikes everyone here is because Mike Fagan had a different opinion than he did, but if someone here has a different opinion than Snowden then we’re “sensitive” and “quick to anger”. Pot, kettle, black Jonathan.

I don’t have a problem with the staff. I am friendly with some, some I don’t know at all. I didn’t agree with Fagan’s article, but I’m hardly going to hold a grudge! It is part of writing things on a prominent website, especially when you are writing pieces designed to generate conversation. Sometimes you take stances that are controversial. I’m not mad.

1. “"How will you post links to the people doing the actual interviews and breaking the news in a magazine?"-J.S.”
Doesn’t mention this being a “copy and paste” site. That is a reference to this site being a blog. You know, a site where people take other articles and use them to jump off conversation? And it was clearly a joke.
2. “Because of the stuck-up, prickish tone you use every time you make such comments.”
Stuck up? Or confident and assured? Look, I’m not going to pretend that I am a newcomer to MMA, or that I need a ton of guidance in figuring things out. Why should I do that? I’ve studied MMA pretty intently and I’m not afraid to express my views.
3. "Disagree. I wrote a book that was critical of them [Sherdog] in several places. I’ve been back since. Multiple times."-J.S."
I mentioned my book one time in 132 comments? Not exactly a reckless shill!
4." As long as they are the same as yours? We (the commenters here) disagree with each other all the time, however we don’t always have the kind of condescending attitude when responding to each other as you do."
If every opinion was the same as mine, what would be the point of reading the comments and talking with people? People here are very sensitive. I will be sure to preface more comments with “in my opinion” or “With due respect to the greatest of all MMA blogs…”

You’re pro-WAMMA. There’s one.

Oh man. That must be it! I am so pro-WAMMA it hurts. So crazily pro-WAMMA that I wasn’t even aware of the BE case against them until someone else pointed it out.
I think people here make some good points about WAMMA. I’m not involved in that part of the process and don’t necessarily agree with all their decisions. I am simply providing my thoughts about the top fighters in the world. If that helps promotions put together better fights, I’m all for it.
As for Fagan, I didn’t know he was the mind behind Sacking Mike Goldberg until I was already posting here. How could I have a preconceived notion? I don’t hold a grudge about that. I said my piece and have no hard feelings. For example, this was a funny topic-well done sir.

Yes
I don’t so much follow writers on MMA – everyone has an axe to grind. I sift through the raw data and get my opinions that way, instead of agreeing with x’s opinion on the subject.
I’m sure you know more than I do about MMA and I can learn from you, but as I said, WAMMA is so bassackwards that I have to take what you say with a grain of salt.
Also, i just noticed that’s your book in your pic there, so like every comment has had a little advert there.

The great thing about BE is that ‘we’ as the community will shoot down everyone and anyone and that includes the staff, fighters and anyone who comes over expressing an ‘opinion’. It’s about intelligent debate and that’s why we love BE.

Of course it doesn’t mean I’m superior to anyone. Sometimes it does mean I’m better informed and have better access to information. Sometimes I will have talked to the actual people involved when others are just speculating. All opinions are not born equal.
That said, I don’t intend to be voicing THE opinion about anything we talk about. I’m just voicing my opinion. And there has been very little debate about my actual opinions and much more talk about my demeanor. That should tell you:
A. Sometimes my opinions are hard to refute. Because they are the truth. ;)

A. Sometimes my opinions are hard to refute. Because they are the truth. ;)
and
B. I may be a bit of a jackass. I will try harder…
Look, you are no doubt very educated in MMA, I respect that and I think a lot of people here would too if you just came across as less of a “jackass” (your word, not mine). The reason I like this site so much is because guys like Michael Rome have the kind of inside sources that I don’t have and he is very accessible, if I have a question that he might be able to answer he is usually pretty quick to respond. Adding someone like you to the fold who might have the same types of connections (or different ones) is only a plus for everyone who visits here. But if you come across as the kind of guy that none of us want to converse with then what good does it do? We aren’t ganging up on you because you have different views than us or some of the writers here who we like, the writers here disagree with each other all the time but when they express those views to each other they don’t do it in a manner that sounds rude or snobbish. I guess what I’m trying to say is maybe be a little more willing to see other’s opinions (even if you don’t agree with them) and maybe try to think how you come across when you respond to people here, you might find yourself actually making friends instead of enemies. Maybe that’s not what you’re looking for but I imagine you at least want to get along with the people you are talking to, if not it doesn’t make much sense for you to be here. I would think someone like you would have better things to do than trolling.
by ufc4 on Apr 11, 2009 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think the tone of my posts is that different than anyone else’s. The main difference is that I am new and I debated some of the site’s main writers.
I don’t think I am a snob, and people are usually plenty happy to talk to me about MMA, even when we disagree. Perhaps the impersonal medium is causing some problems, helping me create a tone that I don’t intend? I don’t really have a good grasp on what some of you are angry about. I look back at the threads and don’t see any insults and don’t see me dismissing anyone else’s views. Except occasionally with facts.
