Attn: Bloody Elbow Night Crew, Respect Baudelaire
So remember in the comments section of a post recently (I don't remember which) I said I wasn't keen on the idea of doing a t-shirt? Remember how I said I'd do it only if I was blown away?
Mission accomplished. Baudelaire created one and it's very cool. Hint: the Bloody Elbow Night Crew will not be disappointed.
I'm going to get his permission to post the t-shirt. If you guys like it, we'll consider printing them.
UPDATE: So here's a simple question: do you think we should print the shirtt? Answer yes or no. As far as the shirt, read the tags and where the bus is headed. They can both be tweaked to be bigger and more legible, respectively, but at least catch the idea.
The FanPosts are solely the subjective opinions of Bloody Elbow readers and do not necessarily reflect the views of Bloody Elbow editors or staff.

I’ll patiently await the ‘Respect Subo’ FanPost, seeing as how I was ruthlessly defaced by smoogy in gif form during the WEC liveblog.

I think something funky happened with the jpg. I can’t really read the text – or maybe that’s by design?

Some considerations..
Would you want this shirt to be screen printed? I’m counting eight colors. With the white space and predominant black, I wouldn’t think you’d want to do a digital print, and an eight color screen print is going to bring up the front end cost considerably.
Furthermore; how much interest would have to exist to print these shirts? It seems to have a limited appeal. I have resources for short run screen printing if the interest is low and you want to fire some out anyway. My email is on my profile.

I’m not looking to lose money, but I don’t care at all about making a cent off of these. I couldn’t care less about mass appeal.
You couldn't care less about mass appeal?
You’re selling shirts.

Fair enough
Sales up, costs down. Not saying you should have snakes climbing through skulls, or zombies putting each other in kimuras to merely increase appeal.. Though I would buy the latter without hesitation.

no offense but i wouldn't buy it..
and blackout has a point.. if it is screen printed it wouldn’t look as good.. digital is better in a design like this, but it would be more costly.
I don’t like doing digital prints on apparel at all. Personally, I’m not really into the shirt. No slight on Baudelaire, who I like very much. If other people are interested, more power to you.

Different strokes, different folks
I like it a lot, but if you guys don’t, ok, no worries. I’m sure Baudelaire’s got a lot of tricks in his bag.
so what kind of shirt are you really interested in doing?
it has to be Bloody elbow night crew? or what chris said, anything as long as it looks good and has BE written on it?
by Anton Tabuena on Apr 7, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions
woah woah, let’s not go crazy here… it should totally say Bloody Elbow Night Crew :-D
by Chris Nelson on Apr 7, 2009 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions
I wouldn't buy it either
I appreciate the effort myself, and perhaps there will be a couple to choose from?? hint hint wink wink nudge nudge.
Luke is right though, different strokes different folks
I know nothing about T-shirt making, but I’d definitely buy a Bloody Elbow Night Crew shirt. One suggestion though – the whole point of the night crew is to stay up and watch Japanese events, right? Could the shirt have something that reflects that? If this is the shirt you’re going with, I’m cool with that, just thought I’d throw in my .02.
I’m with the Beer Monster here. If this shirt gets printed, I’ll totally rock one — I’d wear a shirt with Bea Arthur buck naked if it said “Bloody Elbow” — but I’m not totally blown away by the design. As weo and Blackout noted, I think something simple with two or three colors would look great on a screenprint (not to mention be way cheaper to print). Daps to Mr. Baudelaire for setting this in motion though – I hope to be draped up in BE clothing in time to hit the beach.
Beach? More like hard court

I like the bus theme. Make the BLOODY ELBOW larger across the top and the NIGHT CREW larger so it will still be readable after printing and you have a winner.
There are a few cheap ways to get them done with very little effort on anyone’s behalf.
A few examples of simply uploading your design and they do the rest.

http://www.zazzle.com/create
Nooooooooo
Cafe Press jacks up the costs big time so they can profit from the sale as though they are their own designs. Willing to assume the other site is more of the same. I know Luke isn’t interested in profiting, but he could keep the cost of the shirt much lower by hiring a screen printer directly.

that sucks :( I guess you pay for convenience.
I like my Fedor shirts I got from there and one of the few places who dont charge crazy amounts for international shipping.
With final cost, they’re perhaps not so bad. But when you submit artwork and expedite the online cart/screen printing/shipment, they take your profits up until a pretty ridiculous cost.

Yeah, Cafe Press is expensive and doesn’t make the best quality stuff.
I’m sure we could find someone to run a small batch on screenprint relatively cheaply. I think someone in another post even said they have a setup they’d consider busting out if we ever decided to do shirts.

1. I like the design, but would perhaps something a bit simpler would be easier to see and cheaper, and thus acquiring the shirts would be more feasible. Something perhaps with Night Crew, Bea, or Mo! I would love having “Hello, Japan!” on it (but not necessarily Gardner – we get the joke without having to beat it into the ground explaining it. Besides, the photo would be hard to print and $$$)
2. Would this come in colors other than white? Any other neutral is fine with me, gray, black, etc.
3. Any comments aside, Baudelaire, you are awesome for getting this started. And being creative.

Agreed
Either Dream or Pride images would be unreal. i dont know how comfortable luke or anyone else would be with taking one and slapping BE on it, but maybe we could just do it anyways. and by “we” i mean someone else and ill buy one
If you take that same design/concept but simplify it to a two color (red for “Bloody Elbow”, white for everything else on a black shirt) it would be tits.

staying up with the night crew is worth the dragging ass at work the next day.
but how many folk work on sundays? the last one started on a saturday night/sunday morning at 2 am. so if you dont have to be at work until monday, you should be golden. (i say this but i work a job where my weekend is on monday-tuesday, so i get to drag ass at work on sundays).
I work Sundays and that’s why I’m never up with the Night Crew.

FYI for those of you wanting us to use pictures of fighters, posters...etc
if we’re selling these we can’t break any laws with likeness/copyright. So like we can’t use pictures of a fighter without their permission, or copyrighted logos, or photos we don’t have the rights to…etc. SO a completely original design is the only way this really works.

great design but...
How the hell is anybody going to know the meaning of this shirt when passing by somebody who is wearing it? The point is to promote the site and make a little money. I have a better idea.. Get a white t-shirt and type “BLOODYELBOW.COM” in big black bold letters. There, I did it!
Check the comments...
As Luke said, we don’t have permission to use the URL on the shirt. Also, when I see somebody wearing a t-shirt with a big URL on it, my first thought isn’t “oh, I’d better go to that website.” It’s probably “look at the mook wearing the free promo tee.” I’m way more likely to ask someone with a cool, kind of obtuse design on their shirt what it’s all about. Besides, BE’s name gets spread around plenty as it is. This is just something fun.
I didn’t have time to read the comments and obviously I was being sarcastic when I mentioned wearing a big t-shirt with a huge URL. I’m just saying that reading this specific t-shirt would promote nothing and get no business and I can’t remember somebody ever coming up to me and giving two shits what my t-shirt means. I understand its just for fun, but you guys are donating a lot, if not all, of your time to this site so why not invest in a shirt design that can actually promote casual fans to this site besides hard-cores.
No offense to Baudelaire, he did a great job.

Throw a little color on it, perhaps red for the site, and let me know where to send the money. Though I don’t get the significance of the bear, but it’s still interesting. I just can’t think of anything Night Crew related that wouldn’t need to worry about copyrights, aside from a map of Japan. Which would be weird.

BE shirt ideas
This is a cool thread and I love Baudelaire. Hope you don’t mind me chipping in a few thoughts, which you can freely disgard:
1) Rather than limiting it to the night crew, it’d be cool if the shirt was reflective of the site as a whole—it would have a bigger potential audience that way too.
2) I love the idea of taking pre-orders and printing a list of usernames on the back, maybe like a concert t-shirt lists the various cities/dates it visits.
3) It’s important to have a large, simple design that says: I talk about fights on the internet at a cool site named Bloody Elbow. Throwing in buses or bears will confuse the issue.
4) I would never own an Affliction shirt, and have no MMA shirts whatsoever. If I bought one, I’d want to support my favorite site, and advertise that I’m a user—that way, if I saw blackout612 at BW3 I’d recognize him or any other regulars if I run into them at a UFC event.
5) This is a great idea that must happen. But it also should not be tossed off or taken lightly. Having five designs to choose from in a prominent poll on the frontpage would probably be the best way to decide.
Those are my thoughts. Thanks for listening.

Sorry, I will never approve a shirt like this. Look, ultimately I’m happy to have everyone’s input and I hope this doesn’t come across dick-ish, but I’ve got final veto. I was writing on this site when no one was around and I protect the image of this place with every fiber of my being.
If we do a shirt, it’s only because it has serious artistic merit. And that’s not negotiable.

Nevermind that it’s a two color process. Plus, when you design a shirt, it has to be a flat graphic, not onto a photo of someone in apparel.

Another thing to keep in mind
You can’t use images that aren’t of your own creation or purchased through stock media sites. Seems most of the designs are auto traces in AI. Editing an existing photograph does not protect you from infringement of intellectual property. Don’t want BE on the hook for something like that..

How about this?

I know I’m new and all, but just had a thought and figured I’d throw it out there. My photoshop is not working right so I had to use aviary, but the red on the sleeve is blood, hence Bloody Elbow. Just a concept, let me know what you think.
very witty. but to screen print, it would take 2 screens (2 colors, also because of the location of the ‘blood’). also, some screen printers don’t like printing on the sleeve, its annoying to set up apparently.
sweet idea though.
Oh, they like it
Because they’ll charge you double for it.

The good thing about Baudelair’s designs is only those with the inside word would know what they mean. They are subtle and you can wear them without drawing attention to yourself like most MMA shirts.
I think the words Luke is looking for with these shirts is ‘obscure’ and ‘subtle’?

Maybe with a different color…

The green has a significance.

I like it
You don’t have to, but I’d be interested in hearing the inspiration or choices for shirt.
I could take or leave green, significance aside.
I liked the original phrasing better.
Bolts from the Blue // "Game over." - Jamal Williams
Bloody Elbow // "Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats." - H.L. Mencken
I’m sure you know how we’ll often say “Choi’d” or “Bearded” or “GSP’d” to mix it up with Rec’s.. Like I told Richard below, I can obviously edit any parts of the image or the color for a different effect. This was just the concept that suddenly popped into my head as I scrolled through this thread earlier this afternoon.
Keep in mind that I kept the design to a two color process. It would require two screens (front/back), but is still much more cost effective than many 7-8 color processes.

Bloody Elbow // "Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats." - H.L. Mencken
Green nonetheless
That’s when I decided to stylize my choice. There’s a hint of blue in it. I have a pretty individual creative aesthetic, but it’s brought me where I am. I can toy with it. I know a red would go over well, but it would change the message (and look like the figures are standing in a pool of blood, no less). Suggestions?

Probably
I’m not a big fan of white tees myself. This is just the way I designed it at the outset. I could reverse the image onto a black tee and retain the green (or another shade of green). I’ve actually been partial to using neons in the apparel that I’ve designed of late.

Choi'd is awesome by me
I like the idea of a shibbeleth or some other insider code to other smarts. My whole thing is I would love something for the whole BE community (not just the Night Crew, though they can have a separate shirt for just them if they want one) and something that symbolizes out dedication to the site and the “club” atmosphere it fosters. I know Luke is worried about anything branded with BE, so “choi’d” might be a good substitute.

Agreed on the Night Crew – while it would be cool to immortalize our insomnia, something for the entire site would be awesome and not cliquish. Choi’d is universal for everyone here. Choi’d on the front, BE on the back.

I think it’s ok. I’ll double check with the SBN lawyers, but we can use it. My issue was someone else using our logo or name or URL without our expressed permission.
On second thought
I think I kinda have a problem with this shirt. Admittedly, it’s clever and I think a lot of you guys like the insular nature of the message. But that’s my problem.
What I was hoping (from Baudelaire or one of you guys or whoever) to get was something artistic, something that takes real craft and is uniquely interesting. Something that’s in the pursuit of excellence. We all can have different ideas obviously, but to me that doesn’t mean what I am asking for is some nebulous, obscure reference as an artistic conceit. But I also don’t want to see the shirt just reference a unique albeit esoteric element of the site. I kinda envision that being more than comments section technology and language only a handful of readers and maybe one or two staff members use.
Again, I want to be clear: Balckout’s design is smart, clever and has clear appeal. And I appreciate him taking the time to put this forward. But the other issue is that while the community here is as vibrant as they come, I kinda had hoped to get something that’s about more than me, you, the community itself or any individual component of this site. So, in retrospect, the Night Crew shirt doesn’t meet the criteria either, although like Blackout’s design, it satisfied some or even most of the conditions.
I don’t know. Maybe I’m not really sure what I want. Let’s take a breather for the moment. Maybe I can come up with some criteria. Maybe we can tweak this. Let me talk to the staff and get back to everyone. I know people are eager to get an idea moving, but I’m a control freak and a lunatic so I have to feel comfortable about this.
It's all good
Though, it seems you’re altering your train of thought to accompany a more mass appeal graphic. For what it’s worth, that’s my one shot at potentially putting something together pre-emptively. It’s a press ready production graphic, and I rarely do graphics recreationally (since it’s what I do for a living and emcompasses most of my days) and never do graphics for free (particularly those that will be used commercially). Had an idea, had some time to fuck around and shot something out.
If you or the staff have a concrete idea and wish to contact me privately to produce it professionally, I’m open to doing so. Otherwise, I’m sure Baudelaire will put something together for you guys.

i prefer the first 2 without the addition of the lines on the outside. it anchors it on the shirt funny. looks like either (1) missing something or (2) drawing a nipple line.
did you change the bus by reducing the number of colors in it? (i only see 1 red, 2 greys, 1 black, and 1 white) is this shown on a light grey t shirt?
i’d easily wear all 3 designs, nothing in particular makes me like/dislike one more than the other. they all look great.
Yeah, I am trying to get the bus down to 1 red, grey, black, white on a grey t-shirt.

I like the one with the red earth
Two color process, as opposed to three and six for the other two, and I like the design. I would go back to not having the lines around the outside. Is it intentional to not have the black space all the way around between the globe and the outer circle?
