Quote of the Day: Jeff Monson Talks Fedor Emelianenko, Sergei Kharitonov

1238940268_medium

My goal in DREAM is to fight the best. Ultimately, I want to fight Fedor. If DREAM could set that up it would be great.

I am happy that the fight (with Sergei Kharitonov) ended quickly as I know Sergeiy is a tough fighter with good conditioning. I wanted to end it quickly and am glad I managed to do so.

I was a little surprised that I caught him like that so early. Normally that sort of hold is something that would take awhile to get. I have been training with Roy Nelson at American Top Team and there are many great ground fighters there.

(I'd been) training that move just last night so it was very fresh in my mind. Of course when the opening was there, I took it.

Any chance...

Monson is Fedor’s opponent at Affliction 3?

Seemed to me

from prior interviews on the subject that they already had someone in mind prior to the sergei fight.

Yeah, I’d doubt it.

I doubt it because of:

A) Monson’s torrid pace as of late (what was this, his third fight in three weeks?).
B) Affliction wants someone with name recognition, and Monson never went over with the casual fans.
C) the unpredictability around Monson’s legal issues.

can one of you bjj guys explain that choke to me?

where was the pressure coming from? was his arm trapped? would sergie have went nighty night eventually? why couldnt sergei buck and turn or create any space at all?

thanks in advance.

it's a

combo choke/neck crank. sort of like a reverse arm triangle. it’s monson’s trademark move and with it he has tapped numerous people in grappling and bjj. sergei definitely would have went nighty-night—check out the monson-hinckle fight from the ufc. dreamland.

when someone has good base, it is very hard to escape that position.

This might be hard to picture, so I apologize if it’s confusing; it’s actually a deceptively simple choke.

Monson is basically sprawling out to maximize his weight and force over Sergei’s head/neck. He’s clasping his hands and squeezing – or as my instructor likes to say, “flexing his massive pipes”. As Sergei’s head and trapped arm are forced closer together, his neck is both cranked and Monson’s right bicep is pushing on his neck. It’s extremely uncomfortable and almost impossible to escape, and if you do, you roll right into a guillatine. It’s not as fast as some chokes because there is only one pressure point, but because your opponent essentially can’t move without breaking his own neck, you usually just clamp on and wait.

I like this choke; i got my first ever submission using it.

I suppose he also wants to get his ass kicked by Fedor. Cause that’s what would happen.

How long has he been training with Roy Nelson?

for the 2 weeks since their fight??

I doubt they would train together before their scheduled fight (which was March 21)

Monson makes it seem like he has been training with him for months

Seems like it must have been before. I don’t think he’d be too much heavy training in between three fights in three weeks.

I'd say Monson beats Fedor

12 out of 800 times. Pretty good odds.

by MauiPimpin on Apr 7, 2009 6:49 PM EDT reply actions

no way, at best he could sneak a gun in maybe 3 out of 800 times and then he would still lose two of those times.

I dislike Matt Hughes.

Monson vs. Fedor

I don’t think that he is the one to finally beat Fedor.I know that he is an AbuDabi champ. but I dont think that he has the stand-up skills to make it past Fedor’s inital on slaught of devastaing strikes that he likes to unleash early in fights.
I would predict Fedor by 1st round destruction.
