This is one of my favorite MMA pieces out there.. It is another digital painting and i really like how darkdux made it look more like a traditional art piece with the colors, the brush strokes, and the lines for the details..

Oh, they're definitely not nailed down

They’re Forrest’s ears, after all.

i dont know how to do digital paintings and i wouldn’t dare attempt painting using my mouse haha.

by Anton Tabuena on Apr 7, 2009 3:54 AM EDT up reply actions

You can scan the pencils/lineart and then paint it on photoshop/painter using your mouse. But of course a tablet makes things a lot smoother. You learn to paint digitally a lot quicker if you already know how to paint using traditional tools (watercolor, acrylic, oil etc.). The most important thing is having a solid grasp of the fundamentals of anatomy, lighting, color theory, establishing focal points, etc. Transferring ones artistic skills onto a digital program would be a lot easier if you already have a solid skill set and foundation on traditional art. Anybody can be a photoshop whiz but that doesn’t mean that anybody can produce great art. I’m rambling now. LOL

Dude, seriously look into investing in a tablet. I’ve heard good things about the Wacom Bamboo but if you have the cash buy an Intuos. I bought a Wacom Graphire 4 years ago and it still works perfectly well.

what i do usually is draw something, scan it. Change out the color of the line, (black makes it less colorful), Print it out, then color it manually.

Although those stuff that i regularly draw aren’t mma related.. haha.

I usually use photoshop for manipulations only, and traditional art for drawings.. i want to learn new stuff and im really thinking about investing on a really good tablet, probably the next time i go to the US. :)

I had one of those years ago from ebay for $10. It was so bad that I had better results using my mouse.

My advice; get a good one.

WACOM

I use WACOM tablets. My most recent purchase came at a nearly 50% discount because the model was being replaced. Never even heard of Jam.

Other than the tethered stylus, it was actually pretty reliable for a while, and had good pressure sensitivity. Obviously Wacom is the way to go though, they’re the top brand. I might try to snag one eventually, going after discontinued models sounds like a good idea.

Haha.. Didn’t notice it until you said it. Seriously, once you get a WACOM, you’ll be thrilled that you did. They’re great to work with.

You already have the hard part down pat – your drawings. Just scan them and play with them in Photoshop, you’d be surprised with the results you can achieve.

by Benicio on Apr 7, 2009 5:23 AM EDT up reply actions

yep, ive been planning to do that since i regularly scan the drawings i do before coloring them in..

i found it really hard to make good pieces by coloring with my lame optical mouse, so i’ll wait till i get a tablet then i’d start trying it out. :)

Serene Brutality

The aesthetic beauty of the simple composition and serene, muted blue of the floor betray the hideousness of what the guys are actually doing to eachother. I’m not sure you were going for that sort of irony but regardless, I think it goes byond a fan piece into the actual “art” realm. You should do a series called “serene bruatality” and show it at a gallery. Seriously.

Follow the links to their deviantart page, and if they’re selling, there’s gonna be something written like “print available”.. That link would then show details on how to buy it.. :)

Originals are likely to be quite expensive

And any sort of multiple prints of an individual require rights to the usage of their likeness.

Wonder what the licencing charge would be from UFC?

Also a lot of these pics are simply fan art done at a low resolution simply for the artists enjoyment rather than any commercial focus. To get them to a level viable for print would mean redoing some of them from scratch.

by Benicio on Apr 7, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Doubt it

Any artist with the level of ability of that above would have saved his artwork as a vector file. He could make that image the size of your house without losing image integrity.

by Charles Awad on Apr 7, 2009 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I think we're discussing different points

That was in reference to the original art file, but it’s a moot point. You can’t print and sell copies of artwork of an individual’s likeness. I mean, maybe they do. I’m just saying that it’s illegal. If it wasn’t, I’d do more stuff like the above and print copies for commercial use. But I can’t.

Trust me

It’s illegal. I’ve worked in sports memorabilia and creative services for many years. Obama doesn’t profit from the use of his own image. He profits from other people using his image, because he’s a political figure.

by Charles Awad on Apr 7, 2009 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

its illegal even if it’s a painting? really? cause if its just a photomanip of the figure sure, you can’t sell it.. but i think deviantart has prints of famous people being sold..

by Anton Tabuena on Apr 7, 2009 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Marilyn Monroe's next of kin isn't going to sue some kid in Biloxi, Miss at Deviant Art

But if you, for instance, paint Adrian Peterson and then sell the prints; you’re probably going to get sued. It’s the use of private likeness for personal profitability. You can sell originals until you’re blue in the face, and can probably get away with short prints on images like the one above (maybe like 20 before someone notices). Isn’t there a terms of usage at Deviant Art? If you can sell prints, I’m sure there’s a user agreement that prohibits the sale of such materials.

Paintings have paint on them. I already told you that you can sell paintings.

I’m certainly not going to read the user agreement myself. I don’t use Deviant Art. But I know the law. Do with it what you will..

Particularly

If you’re selling it as a picture of Forrest Griffin. If it was an ambiguous image of a “fighter” who just so happens to look a bit like Griffin, you might be able to get away with it without garnering any considerable attention. But since it is clear (and the above image is merely a for-instance) that the image is of Forrest, you can only profit from the original as artwork. You could certainly sell them for as long as you want until you receive a cease and desist letter, but in ceasing, you would also be asked to turn over any profits.

No

They’re brush techniques. That’s done on a tablet in AI.

I doubt it

I’ve done digital paintings before and hang-out in digital art message boards and I’m pretty sure this was done in PS with a standard hard brush.

It looks like this was more of a quick paint, doing this in AI I imagine would take a lot longer.

Do you own a stylus?

I have the very brushes that he used to create the image. Trust me… It’s AI, no doubt about it.

Also

If you’re using brush techniques to create imagery in PS, you’re sort of behind the curve. You can vector out all of your art if using imported brushes in AI. And frankly, there’s no good reason not to do that.

Also, weo already confirmed that he used AI.

Yes I do

I’ve done this kind of work, it sure looks like PS to me. Most digital painters/colorists I know work exclusively with PS. Did weo confirm it to you that it was done in AI? I don’t see where he mentioned it. You have options in Deviantart where you can categorize your art. He would have categorized this as vector if it was.

If you ask any top digital painters or colorists out there I’m sure they’re going to tell you that either use PS or Painter for they’re works. Probably because you get more of a painterly feel with those software. It’s pretty much straightforward painting with the brush tool. :)

Here’s a quick coloring that I did using similar techniques.

by skeed on Apr 8, 2009 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

No offense

I’m saying, if that’s what you use, enjoy. I own and am the creative director of a creative services company in Minneapolis and have created and sold digital art and apparel since I was a teenager. Colorizing (which I often use PS for) and creating a digital painting (AI) aren’t the same thing. I would never use anything other than AI for a digital painting. Even in some circumstances such as that above, I would trace out all of the line work into vectors and use a tablet and pen with imported brushes. It is far more practical for a myriad of reasons. The only reason I would imagine using PS to scratch paint is if my hardware were somehow severely lacking. Shit, even then, I would just as soon go to Best Buy and pick up a block of RAM. Not saying artists don’t do what you do, but it’s less practical. You must save images like that at 320+ dpi? Those images are likely to reach 7-10MB. Same image in AI— you’re looking at 200KB. Vectors are your friend.

I see. But I do know that probably 99% of people who do digital paintings or colorings in the comic book industry use either Photoshop or Painter. The massive files do suck. :)

Hope you don't mind but I'm curious

My knowledge of AI is limited and I have not upgraded in years (still using CS). How would someone go about doing a digital painting like this in AI? http://fc17.deviantart.com/fs41/f/2009/054/5/d/Oldmen_and_sea_by_Waldemar_Kazak.jpg

I’m way out of the loop on what the new versions of AI can achieve. A brief explanation would suffice or maybe you can point me to a good tutorial. Thanks!

If you want to hit me up on the email on my profile, I’ll link you up to some free brush pallettes. I’m not aware of any online tutorials. When I get a new brush set, I play around with it for an hour or so to learn its directional and effect properties. If you use brushes in PS and remember at all how to use anchor points and expanding appearances of objects, you should be able to feel your way around. Like I said, shoot me an email..
