Vinny Magalhaes Cut From the UFC

Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace and UFC light heavyweight Vinny Magalhaes (2-4, 1 NC, 0-2 UFC) has been released from his UFC contract according to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, as relayed by Five Ounces of Pain:

According to the latest print edition of "The Wrestling Observer", the UFC has decided to release Magalhaes mainly because the company is trying to build new contenders in each weight class. The fighters who don’t have potential according to the UFC will be sent packing.

Vinny showed phenomenal ground skills, but little else during his time on the 8th season of The Ultimate Fighter, and in his two UFC fights.  Originally the head BJJ instructor at Team Quest, Vinny has most recently been associated with the Gracie Humaita camp in Brazil, and with Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas.  Magalhaes leaves the UFC without a win inside the Octagon.

While on TUF, Magalhaes dominated his opponents with slick submissions, but was often criticized for losing composure and turtling quickly when he was hit.  In the season's finale, the Brazilian lost in the light heavyweight finals to Arizona Combat Sports standout Ryan Bader via first-round knockout.  Vinny was given another shot last month at UFC 97 when he faced his cast-mate from the show, Elliott Marshall, but Marshall's own BJJ black belt neutralized Magalhaes on the ground, and the American's superior striking won him a unanimous decision.

That’s why other promotions don’t make money, coveting guys who just aren’t that good.

No fighter with a 2-4 record should be in the UFC. I’m sure they will gladly have him back if he gets some wins. Meanwhile, another fighter will get a shot at the UFC and a smaller promotion will benefit from having a “UFC veteran” and “Ultimate Fighter runner up”.

He’s too much of a pretty boy – he doesn’t like to get hit in the face

he has no business in the UFC, or really against any decent opponents at this point in his career. His BJJ is top notch, but until he is able to really bring a different aspect to his game then he wont be a significant threat to any decent LHW

With his BJJ skills

Japan would be perfect.

He’s a very raw guy and don’t forget that he’s really young. He just needs time to develop and I think that being cut from the UFC is the best for him in the deep LHW weight class.

Loiseau, Chonan, MacDonald and Bielkheden can be added to that list. Disappointing to see MacDonald go, particularly after Dana said he wouldn’t be cut. Hopefully it’s just a “win a couple of fights elsewhere and we’ll bring you back” type of cut. The others aren’t really surprising.

Vinny is one of those guys who just cannot take it once he gets drilled

and in MMA, with those tiny gloves, you have to be able to take some punishment. It is a shame though, with all of his BJJ prowess, that someone cannot push him more. Oh well, there are plenty more guys waiting to take his spot.

Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.
