Nate Marquardt vs. Demian Maia at UFC 102

_demian_maia_mediumPromoted to the front page from the FanPosts by Chris Nelson.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu phenom Demian Maia has has announced on his official website that he will be facing fellow top-ranked middleweight Nate "The Great" Marquardt in a match-up that many fans were hoping for and expecting, at UFC 102, scheduled for August 29th in Portland, OR.

*****Confirmed the next opponent for Demian Maia, unbeaten in 11 fights in MMA - UFC 102 - August 29 Portland, OREGON: Demian Maia vs Nate Marquardt*****

Maia (10-0, 5-0 UFC), already world-renowned for his grappling prowess, took the UFC middleweight division by storm, using his unparalleled ground skills to submit five consecutive opponents, with Chael Sonnen being the most recent victim back in February at UFC 95. Training with Wanderlei Silva and the rest of the Wand Fight Team, Maia has been working his striking diligently as well.  Rumors appeared earlier in the spring that Maia would be getting the next shot at Anderson Silva's title after Thales Leites, although some have argued that Maia has not faced top-level competition in the middleweight division.

After the debacle surrounding Silva's performance against another highly skilled grappler in Leites, it seemed obvious that the UFC would be hesitant to match their champion with another pure jiu-jitsu specialist, and so now Maia finds himself with perhaps the most difficult test of his career.

Since falling short in his title shot against Anderson Silva back in July of 2007, Nate Marquardt (28-8-2, 7-2 UFC) has quickly risen back to top contender status, with dominant wins over Jeremy Horn, Martin Kampmann, and Wilson Gouveia, and a controversial split decision loss to Thales Leites since the Silva fight.  Marquardt lobbied for a match with Maia following the Gouveia victory, and many believe that, much like Kenny Florian, Nate has evolved and improved significantly enough since his first crack at The Spider, that a rematch may play out very differently.

Star-divide

20090208042348_natemarquardt_mediumPosessing one of the most well-rounded arsenals in MMA today thanks to his association with Greg Jackson, Marquardt combines excellent wrestling, a tremendously-effective and diverse striking game, and a black-belt in BJJ in a package that is difficult for any opponent to deal with.  Although Nate hasn't faced anyone in the UFC with Maia's level of BJJ (although Leites is a very skilled grappler, and he was easily handled by Marquardt), he has only been submitted twice in his nearly 40-fight career, and the most recent of those (against Ricardo Almeida) was over five years ago.

It seems clear that the winner of this fight is being set up to get the next shot at Anderson Silva, but Dana White has previously stated that the winner of Dan Henderson-Michael Bisping at UFC 100 will also get a shot the 185 lb crown.  It remains to be seen if either Marquardt or Maia will simply have to wait their turn, or if they will perhaps fight the winner of Hendo-Bisping to determine a clear-cut #1 contender.

Maia's biggest test by far.

and no gimme for Nate either.

I wonder who Nate could possibly bring in to camp to emulate Maia’s crazy ground game.

Still, I predict Nate wins by Mortal Kombat finishing combination.

two of my favorite middleweight fighters that i take crap about

I have been betting entire paychecks on Maia since he entered the UFC, obviously making his fight nights an extra payday. For some reason everybody keeps taking my offers. Since before Anderson took Nate out ive been telling people he’s coming back and posing a threat, and then we have my new favorite fight ending technique, “Mortal Kombat, Finish Him combo”. Thanks for writing that, i haven’t laughed with that much sincerity in a long time.

This is the fight I wanted to see!

A top contender should emerge from this fight. Cant wait to see what Maia brings to this match.

I am a little surprised by the fact that people are interested in seeing Nate against Anderson again, considering Anderson has 4 fights left in his MMA career. This is the same Nate who was even at best on his feet against Leites. Of course he can win, so can anyone, I have no interest at all in a rematch. You can tell watching Nate’s striking that Silva would eat him up.

All that being said, I love this match because it’s a hell of a test for Maia. I wouldn’t mind seeing the winner here fight the winner of Hendo/Bisping for a title shot while Anderson does other things. I don’t see any reason to rush.

I too am baffled that people want to see one of the most exciting and talented middleweights in the world get another shot at Silva.

Only rematch I’m interested in is Hendo vs. Silva. Silva would just counterfeit Nate again in a boring fight (Anderson just doesn’t have the fire anymore).

Maia vs. Nate is a good fight though. I don’t see any slick submissions in this one.

I am waiting on that rematch as well my friend

Yeah, because Henderson looked spectacular getting tapped by Silva. I have no interest at all in seeing Henderson vs. Silva again. Marquardt, on the other hand, doesn’t even look like the same fighter he was at the time of the first matchup. Won’t matter, though, because Maia’s winning this one.

I don’t see any slick submissions in this one.

You will, you will.

Exactly, especially with Silva now matched with Griffin. It also makes sure that there is a clear Number 1 contender. If Henderson or Marquardt come out of this then I think you’d be hard pressed to say that they don’t deserve a rematch. It also allows a very intriguing matchup of the losers of those bouts to have a chance to get back to the top too. I just think it makes sense, but wow, they sure have some exciting fights to follow up UFC 100.

I think Marquardt is a terrible matchup for Maia.

Marquardt will have a size/ strength advantage, as well as being a very powerful grappler. Nate will definitely have an edge in striking, and I think that his wrestling is also better.

I love me some Maia, but he’ll have to drastically improve his standup as well as wrestling if he wants to win this fight. I also don’t think it would hurt him to pack on some muscle.

I’m thinking Marquardt by late (T)KO or UD, but with a guy like Demian- there’s always the possibility of a sub. Also, Nate’s been subbed before (although it was 5 years ago, by Almeida, as well as an armbar loss to Genki Sudo over 9 years ago).

A lot of the same was being said about Sonnen’s wrestling and striking, though I’ll agree that Marquardt doesn’t have nearly his handicap in submissions.

Well, yes, but Marquardt is actually talented. Sonnen made his recent reputation beating on someone apparently in the middle of a psychotic break, which caused Sonnen to become delusional.

Who was actually more out of their mind? Paulo during that fight or Chael every moment after that fight up until Maia schooled him?

Sonnen’s a good fighter, man. He just happened to get raped by one of the best (if not THE best) grapplers in MMA.

I will say, though- how a Greco wrestler of Sonnen’s pedigree falls right into a lateral drop like he did is beyond me. Granted, not many people would expect Maia to execute a throw like that, but still, that’s something Chael easily should’ve defended.

If Marquardt can be as slippery on the ground as MacDonald (and to give MacD credit, as offensive as jMac was), this is a good matchup for Nate. Nate has superior wrestling (including TD defense) superior striking, and Marquardt’s GNP is brutal.

by Hardcharger on Apr 30, 2009 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Marquardt is much more conservative on the ground than Macdonald

and will surely not be stupid enough to repeatedly go to the ground against Maia

Agreed, I was just commenting on Nate’s abilities on the ground, if he happens to make a mistake. Maia is great, but JMAc showed you can last a while with him if your own ground game is good, and Nate’s is. If Nate can get Maia against the cage, Marquardt will deliver some nasty GNP.

fantasy match-making

I like the idea of matching up the winner of Marquardt vs Maia against the winner of Henderson vs Bisping. Whoever comes out on top of two of these hypothetical fights would be very difficult to question as a contender.

This gives A.Silva some time to test the waters at LHW.

In the meantime, if W.Silva beats Franklin, perhaps he could matched with Okami. The winner of that fight would also be an unquestioned contender.

better hurry up

silva’s contract is coming to an end and he has shown great interest in getting into the ring as a pure pugilist. if he only has 4 more fights and one of them is with griffin, and another one with hendo/bisping, and you can be sure that if he chops down griffin like the forest he is(could Not resist)then he very well could be in line for a title shot at 205. dana could offer him a 3 fight extension if a title shot at 205 were available. he would wait to see who wins the evens/machida fight, cause he would not fight machida, but imagine silva/evens.

good luck in life!

In my opinion,

unless Hendo brutally KO’s Bisping, and Marquardt/ Maia is a snoozer, I just don’t see Dan getting a title shot right away. If Bisping beats Hendo convincingly, I think he’s first in line for a title shot.

Likewise, if Maia or Marquardt are extremely impressive in victory, and Henderson/ Bisping ends up being a snooze fest, then I could see the winner getting a title shot.

Here’s probably the list (depending on if they win) of who’s in line for a shot:

1) Bisping (undefeated at 185, exciting fights so far, UFC’s ace in the hole for the UK market)
2) Marquardt- has looked very good lately, exciting fighter, someone who would engage Anderson
3) Maia- undefeated, exciting fighter, however, the UFC might be reluctant to make this matchup because of what happened with Andy/ Thales, considering Maia’s BJJ pedigree.
4) Has won his last 2 fights against Toquinho (who was a pretty good prospect, still is) and Franklin (who seemed like the 500 lb. gorilla at MW, beat him in a close fight). Probably not in the UFC’s master plan to have him fight Anderson, but he did do well against Andy in the first round, and if he beats Bisping in exciting fashion, he might be the only good option.

Nate is better rounded

Nate is no Sonnen. He has King of Pancrese level BJJ unlike Chael who never heard of pulling guard before. He won’t be an easy sub and he’ll have a huge size and standup advantage. I really want to see Maia – Silva and Maia will deserve it if he can get past Nate. Maia better have something sick and slick whizzer or trip because he has a significant strength disadvantage in the clinch. I don’t think Maia can shoot on Nate’s wrestling either.

At least Al Davis isn't running my team's drafts.
