What happened to BE.com??
Man I leave the country for a couple weeks and when I come back this has become the PC Blog. What happened? and people are getting kicked off for expressing their opinions? very confused...."DO NOT introduce additional political topics"....haha is Dana White running this website now? telling us what we can and cannont talk about?
Why do we care what Dana or anyone else's opinion is? I don't see how that is relavent to fight coverage.
Please lets just get back to fight coverage and stop taking yourself so seriously BE.com.
The FanPosts are solely the subjective opinions of Bloody Elbow readers and do not necessarily reflect the views of Bloody Elbow editors or staff.

well I am glad that you guys dont listen to us (readers) because I think this is a great site and you guys do a great job. just find all of this non-fight talk silly. that is all I was trying to get across.
the whole political thing I just found funny…I dont want to read about politics on this site either. just found the restriction funny.
keep doing what you guys do and hopefully all of this will go away.
thanks for understanding
We’re walking a fine line because we want to discuss all the relevant aspects of MMA — including the business, PR, and socio-cultural aspects that impact the game behind the scenes but we don’t want the site devolving into a place where people have long off topic political fights.
We got tired of the story too.
Like greasegate or any other controversial topic we have to spend a lot of time managing. It got old but it was worth the discussion.

Speaking of relevant aspects of MMA
I know you do reviews of the Victory Belt series and the other day I saw they are putting out a book by Greg Jackson are you gonna review that before it comes out in August.
I don't know about the timing
but I’ll review it as soon as they sent it to me. Those books are pretty dense and take a bit of time to read as well so I can’t promise I’ll review it before it hits the stands but I’ll do my best.
"the spirit of your average dumbass with more overblown rhetoric" OR "the self-appointed savior of MMA"
awesome I saw the Lyoto Machida book and DVD as well as the rest of the Noguiera series and Lindland’s book is coming out as well so I guess you might be pretty busy with that, but since Victory belt started publishing these books I’ve been wondering why they wrote a book about the fighters and not the people who coach them so I’m curious about Greg Jackson’s book.
still waiting to get any of those
I’m actually backtracking and waiting to get Dave Camarillo’s book. He’s the coach at AKA that trains Fitch and Koscheck but his background is judo + bjj.

Look, man, we listen to readers. In fact, we listen to you guys more than you can possibly imagine. Sometimes I want to kill you guys for all the negative feedback we get. But, that’s life. The trick to be successful, I think, is two fold:
1. Staying true to what you like. You have to have a vision that works, but it also has to be your own vision. I don’t write for the audience. I write for myself and believes others will like it, hate it, comment on it, etc.
2. Finding an ear for criticism. We get VOLUMES of criticism every single day. The key is to pick up on what resonates as true and what doesn’t. I will always appreciate your feedback, but I feel the “PC charge” is not applicable and hackneyed. It’s hilarious, really, I’ve never been accused of being PC in my life. I curse worse than Dana White in my personal life, but in my professional life – and the professional life of Dana White – that sort of thing isn’t allowed. I let myself slip here sometimes, but that doesn’t change the value of the rule and the value of modern professional standards of conduct.
Does that make sense?
You get a lot of negative feedback? Really? WHo are these people?
Sorry, but BE is the best MMA site on these here interwebs.

I’m sure every large site does if for no other reason than the volume of traffic is going to wade in some characters who don’t appreciate your efforts. That much is inevitable.
But on the real: you can ask Nate, I’ve literally come close to having meltdowns on certain readers or on certain issues. I don’t think being outside of staff you can really appreciate it, but when you’re us and you have to go over basically every post and then every comment in every post and do that every day, the amount of criticism collects. Rapidly. Often its garbage, sometimes it’s meaningful and sometimes its mean spirited.
I don’t think people appreciate how much a “I dunno. Why did you write this, Luke? It seems unnecessary and really off the mark” repeated 100 times over the course of a week can drive you crazy. It’s a daily struggle to stay sane with the animals on the loose. :)
I've witnessed your frustration at times
Sometimes I come to the defense of your more subjective offerings, or interject an opposing viewpoint. I know I can often come off as mildly antagonistic when disagreeing with someone (it’s indelibly how I speak/type, though I try to supplement my comments with reminders to that end); so I would like to take a moment to personally thank you for your efforts and the consistent quality of Bloodyelbow, its contents and operation. These same thanks are extended to all of the staff, as well.

For the longest time, I felt as if I didn’t have to post on this site, and instead just read the views of others, because in most cases I felt that someone’s opinion also encapsulated my own. Since I have become a more active member of the BE community, I have come to appreciate the staff for various reasons, but especially due to the promotion of HEALTHY discussion, and varying opinions even amongst the staff. I don’t feel as if it is the Staff vs. the community on this site, and instead feel like everyone articulates their own points rather well…. I also tend to play Devil’s advocate on a lot of topics due to the fact that I always try to see both sides of an issue… but hopefully I’m not contributing to the trolls, or frustrating the staff, because this is definitely my favorite MMA site period…
You guys do a great job, and most of us appreciate it…

For real...
I get e-mails from people all the time talking about either kicking my ass, me being an idiot or just being a douchebag in general. Today I got an “I’m going to drive to illinois and kick your fucking ass” which was sweet seeing as how I now live in Michigan. I’ve had people try to harass my wife via finding her myspace account through mine.
People get WAY out of line. I mean, I argue with you guys sometimes but it’s because I’m passionate about the sport just like you.
But a lot of people don’t understand the dirty side of this game.

I know you take a lot of time out of your personal life and put up with a lot of bullshit to make this site as great as it is and I thank you all for that. Sometimes we might not all agree with what you guys have to say but what makes this place great is the contructive dialogue that can happen from our disagreements and it doesn’t just turn into one giant pissing match like almost every other site does. 1. There’s always been a moratorium on politics here. If someone only wants to discuss politics, they can go to a political website.
2. It’s not the opinions that get people kicked off, but how they express them. Consider the difference between “That dress isn’t flattering” and “That dress makes your ass fat.” People who consistently speak in the latter tone are eventually banned.
3. It’s hardly PC when the editors curse like sailors.
4. This discussion is relevant because it affects the growth of MMA.
5. This should all be obvious, really…

… if the moderators didn’t enforce the rules as well as they do. I don’t want to read slurs against gay people, political rants, or trollish tomfoolery. There is a ton of freedom in the fanposts, which aren’t pre-approved, and which have often been getting frontpage play recently. But there has to be some boundaries to keep the site topical and to keep the riff raff from drowning out the intelligent debate. I’ve found the editors use a light hand and good, sensible judgment. If you can’t play by their rules, start your own site—it’s a big internet.

Can we talk philosophy? Sartre solved everything-ish
by Derek Suboticki on Apr 3, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Sartre only solved his own things. Everyone else must find the purpose of their own existence within their own context. ANd try to avoid an existential crisis while they’re at it…
Actually, I’d say that the best thing that Sartre ever wrote was the introduction to Fanon’s “The Wretched of the Earth”, but that’s me.

I’m not a fan of Sartre – he talks in circles too often without really saying much. Camus is much more interesting. I think Sartre’s eccentricities and social standing contribute to his popularity, much like Hemingway (another good but not great writer). His basic ideas are also self-defeating – he says find your own way, but if you use his advice, you’re arguably doing it his way.
Though kudos for nailing Simone de Beauvoir. . .

Sartre’s point is that everyone does it his way – that is, we all choose and we cannot avoid choosing.
by Derek Suboticki on Apr 3, 2009 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions
If he was being descriptive, I’d agree, but saying we need to avoid “bad faith” and other admonitions are prescriptive in nature. However, to let someone else say what your life should be is bad faith, which is what he’s doing – telling people to choose.

I like a fair bit of Sarte. For one thing, the comment, “you are condemned to be free,” is one of the most powerful things I’ve ever read. A lot of what he says is a little off, especially when he tries to synthesize this ideas with Marxism, but overall he contributed more than most philosophers.
Seriously most only get the “critique the guy before you” down right, with laughable attempts to do the “replace his stupid ideas with ones that aren’t.” It’s a very short list of philosophers who do any of that even a little bit.

Thus Spoke Zarathustra is one of my favorite books, so I can’t hate on Friedrich getting props – but Kierkegaard was one of existentialism’s fathers (I also see a line from Spinoza, Hegel and Heidegger).
by Derek Suboticki on Apr 3, 2009 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions
Nietzche is fucking awesome and I love Thus Spoke Zarathustra (especially with numerous biblical references), but it pains me when people talk about him like he invented the thing (insofar as existentialism is a ’thing’). Here are some choice quotes:
The presence of irony does not necessarily mean that the earnestness is excluded.
People think the world needs a republic, and they think it needs a new social order, and a new religion, but it never occurs to anyone that what the world really needs, confused as it is by much learning, is a new Socrates
It was intelligence and nothing and nothing else that had to be opposed. Presumably that is why I, who had the job, was armed with an immense intelligence.
That last quote is roughly 10 lbs. of pimp in a 5 lbs. sack.

Unfortunately, all of my old stand by’s are sort of losing their way. The new God Forbid isn’t like some shit new direction; it’s just plain mediocre. I’m actually terrified to listen to the new Lamb of God, though I have had it for weeks (on the basis of how awful their last album was). Also, if you yearn for Mastodon of old and haven’t heard American Heritage, do yourself a favor and check them out.

They’ve gone a bit too stoner on this album and it makes me miss the days of Remission. I mean, I love the likes of Kyuss, but if I wanted to listen to that I’d, well— listen to Kyuss.

Hah! They were originally “Sons of Kyuss.”
I listened to the newest Kylesa album 3x last night. Awesome stuff.
Nice
I’m listening to it in my office right now. It really is an amazing album.

I actually understand it, and I didn’t at first. I think it’s just because of how emotionally and passionately some people hold their politics, especially some people with a long-standing (or even lifelong) membership in a specific political party. You can’t really have good conversations or debates about a subject when a big percentage of the people see the entire subject area as a zero-sum competition that must either be won or lost in all facets. Political discussion are just too often black or white, and really people don’t discuss; they just try to “win”.
I suppose because of a combination of A) studying politics (and political theory and philosophy more than anything else), B) my personal radical politics which are way outside the norm, and C) having spent the last two years working for the government, I basically view all politics as in flux, so I try to never take an absolutist view. But even then, unless you know and trust all the people in the discussion, political conversations can get very uncomfortable very quickly. Which is why it’s important that we have them, but probably not here…

Agreed
It’s very hard to reason with people who take an absolute stance on an issue. In Science & Religion class I’m taking, we were discussing same-sex marriage and I asked one guy (a fundamentalist Christian who takes the Bible literally) if he believes homosexuality is a choice or biological, and he said, “Well, it’s natural, like any other disease.” Whether you agree with him or not, how can you rationally speak with someone who maintains such a hardline stance?
I get the informal ban on politics, but it still makes me sad. Many people here are smart enough to debate civilly.

The few philosophy forums I’ve visited are hard to follow because of the usual forum format of quoting instead of nesting comments, like here. Also, there’s the usual crew of people just trying to show off their smarts rather than discussing anything. I do recommend the xkcd forums, though – they’re laid-back.

to be honest…I really dont read the comments sections that much. so I really wasn’t referring to that. My post was more towards the articles that were being posted on the actual website. 3 different articles about this on the front page is just a little much is all I was saying.
Now see
THAT’s a fair criticism. Highlighting the amount of coverage as something you don’t enjoy is better than coming to us and asking “WTF? Happened? Are you all gay now, too?” You didn’t do that exactly, but you catch my drift.
But…I hear you. You don’t think this issue deserves as much coverage as its getting. Duly noted. That’s all you really had to say.
I disagree with him. This story hit the big press. My mother asked me about it. It deserved the coverage. I am sick of it, sure. But it deserved the inches here on BE.
Of course it deserved coverage, friendo. All I’m suggesting is there are ways to get our attention if you have a gripe. A) Make sure it’s salient and b) don’t be a prick.
Yeah..
and trust us. We debate endlessly over when to cut the coverage on stories like this. We added different perspectives/news updates on the situation while each time going “is this too much? I dunno…it’s possibly going to be a big deal let’s keep going”
but like luke said, too much coverage of this one story in the wake of a fight night, TUF debut and upcoming DREAM and Bellator shows…that’s fair criticism.

in all seriousness, I like the fact that we can talk, debate even argue, MMA in a mostly civil manner around here. And when it is called for, venture into the other topics like other sports, movies, current events and even the mild political reference.
The editors/staff always participate, whether or not you agree with their viewpoint. Of course in any segment, there is going to be a fringe percentage of people that will go off the deep end, but they usually come around or are dealt with fairly.
The fact that you have a post questioning the site, should tell us something. This easily could have been deleted, but discussion is usually healthy.

I’ve come to the defense of the site a few times, from those who have extremist views of BE… One person will swear up and down that BE is being paid by ZUFFA, and that all of its articles are biased towards Dana, while another person will accuse them of the exact opposite, in the same vein… lol.
I’ve never seen anybody post about BE on sherdog, but I don’t spend very much time there. I’d be interested to see what they say, even if their real point is concealed by layers of idiocy.

I think the reason that there was an uproar is that Dana not only used an extremely offensive word to describe someone with a dissenting opinion, but that he viciously singled out and attacked a respected journalist, and did so in a very unprofessional manner.
And btw, I always took the “No politics,” clause to mean that non- relevant political issues (like gay marriage, abortion, economic turmoil, etc), having nothing to do with MMA was inpermissible. But when it’s something so relevant to the sport, like an important figure such as Dana, verbally assaulting a journalist/ reporter of the sport, I think it would be pretty ridiculous to cease and decist any intelligent conversation on the topic.

I get attacked too much…
between all sites & blogs…I doubt many more than me have linked this site more doing my best to support it as a fan.
I get it...
it’s a hard thing to balance humor with seriousness and even harder when you’re trying to manage a growing community while trying to keep the “standards” that made it attractive to begin with. We all go through periods where the endless grind gets us down and maybe we all hit that point at the same time (or if not all at least a couple of us…myself included). Also the “serious subjects” like the Dana thing just lead to us getting upset with things like people signing up just to bash us…etc.
I dunno. I don’t think we’re that close to losing our sense of humor…I think we’re just in a period where the humor hasn’t been able to be shown effectively.

There are plenty of times when I dont like this site, or some of the people in it
but first of all, I assume theres even more times when they dont like me.
I think sometimes the BE readership gets a little hypersensitive to things or hyperpolitical or maybe a bit self-important, especially compared to a lot of the other blogs I read. Other than that, when we can manage to have a conversation thats pure MMA, there’s no place better on the internet. Very informed commenters, a lot of up to date information, all that.
So you take with the good with the bad and thank the dudes for their effort.
im not impressed with your performance
This is the best MMA site on the internet… by far.
I used to have Five Ounces as my page for news and whatever, not only because I used to write there but they were the good ol’ blog format like Bloody Elbow is. Then the site got a little too big, and its focus changed to “WE MUST BE AN INTERNET MAGAZINE TYPE THING” and then there was that Huckaby monster and the WAMMA debacle and now I don’t even go there anymore.
Then I switched over to here, where the site has someone struck the almost unattainable goal of having a growing website that for the most part doesn’t have complete douche bags as commenters. The way the whole site works too is just brilliant with the Fanposts and the way to leave comments etc.
But yeah, outside of all sites you have the rest of the world with their viewpoints on how a certain site is. BE are pro-UFC (which is bullshit but anyways…), MMAJunkie is a robot designed to remove emotion from every bit of a MMA news out there, Five Ounces is obsessed with exclusives and run by a horrible dictator, Sherdog has the worst forums known to man, MMA Weekly is that guy you meet who is nice to chat to but you eventually forget their name and don’t talk to them again etc. etc.
I’ll just amend that. I’m also a big fan of Cage Potato, as they also have great fan interaction with their “Cage Wiki” which I’m responsible for filling up. The site is also generally hilarious but the comments section is just full of anonymous idiots.
1. Bloody Elbow
2. Cage Potato
…
3. Fightlinker
I think of MMAWeekly as a really friendly and agreeable sort of dude, who you find out later is a member of a cult.

One question
With all this discussion of certain sites and writers being “anti-UFC” or “pro-UFC” it occurs to me that all sites are pro-UFC to a certain extent. I mean, for all their shortcomings the UFC is still by far the best MMA promotion in the world, and there is nobody even close. We might not agree with the way they handle some parts of their business (fighter contracts, media dealings, etc.) but at the end of the day aren’t we all glad that the UFC is here as opposed to the alternative? That doesn’t mean that we can’t call Dana out when he does something stupid or frown upon some of their business practices but what would MMA be like without them? Would we rather have Rampage fighting for Affliction, Rashad fighting for Strikeforce, and Lyoto fighting for Dream? Personally I prefer them all being under one roof so we can find out who is really the best. Sites like Bloody Elbow probably wouldn’t exist if not for the way Zuffa has brought MMA along and grown it into what it has become today. Hate on Dana White and UFC management all you want, would the world really be a better place without them? Not in my book.
I think you’re pointing out the reality that applies to the vast majority of MMA fans: we’re not always pleased with the tactics of the UFC, but we complain about them because we want the UFC to be BETTER, not to make it go away. The “you’re anti/pro UFC/Zuffa!” comments that get slung around tend to come from the far ends of the bell curve, so to speak. What’s awesome is the times that the same comment gets both a “You’re just pro UFC!” and “You just hate the UFC!” at the same time.

Exactly, I don’t get the people who hate everything UFC and would do anything they can to take it down. Are there any other MMA promotions giving us 1-2 events every single month? Are there any other promotions who have the ability to name undisputed champions in the middleweight, welterweight, or light heavyweight classes? Are there any other organizations paying as many fighters as much money as the UFC is? No, there isn’t, and if the UFC ceases to exist then there probably won’t be for a long time. Like I said, they don’t do everything right and there is plenty of room for improvement, but we should be happy there is even anything to improve on because if they weren’t around we would have a much harder time getting our MMA fix.
