I assume you’re going to remove BJ Penn next month from the Light Weight rankings, since he wouldn’t have fought for a complete year in that division.

do we have to do this every month?
We just attempt to reflect the consensus of the MMA community so unless all the sites that we use to compile the rankings remove him from their lists, he’ll still be in full effect next month.

Oh, when I said “you’re” I was speaking to every MMA website on the internet, not specifically just BE.
I should have been more clear about that.

I'd say that having a scheduled fight...
should mean that the sites will not punish him…especially a scheduled fight against the #3 guy

Diego Sanchez over Kawajiri is a crime.
by AnonymousA on Apr 29, 2009 6:26 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
again
We just attempt to reflect the consensus of the MMA community, so your beef is not with us. Kawajiri will have his chance to rise in the rankings pretty quick.

And this time I really didn’t make any specific claim against BE. Sorry, Kid Nate…it’s cool, dude.
Back on topic, I Sanchez over Kawajiri is ridiculous, when his only fight has come against Joe Stevenson in the division. Totally ridiculous.

sorry to be defensive
these things involve a lot of last minute panic!

The rankings are awesome.
They both serve to inform people and bring about engaging MMA discussions. The exposure this gives MMA through USA Today is pretty cool.
Bloody Elbow easily does the best work of any MMA blog. You should be proud, dude.

Have you ever considered doing a BE exclusive-style personal rankings? Maybe a meta-rankings of BE staff? I’d be interested in that.

This just shows the pointlessness of these rankings. A hybrid of results with personal interpretations of fighters leads to an inaccurate representation of both.

Kawajiri over Gray Maynard is a bigger crime.

Are these current through UFC 97?
I don’t see how Chuck could be Top-10 anymore after that.
Does Fedor tapping Aoki help or hurt either of their rankings? That was such an epic bout, after all…

it usually takes a while
for the impact of a major fight to be fully reflected in the rankings. I expect he’ll continue to drop for the next 90 days — at least.

Considering Fedor/Aoki wasn’t an MMA fight I wouldn’t expect it to hurt him in anyway. He’s still the best lightweight in MMA right now.

I’m aware that Fedor/Aoki was, like my comment, a joke and should not be misconstrued as serious.

Tim Sylvia is still in the top 10.

Which really just exemplifies the fact that there are such few genuine Heavyweight competitors.

There are compeditors at HW, but they are just playing other sports.

Joe Stevenson doesn’t crack the top 25 anymore?
by donkeypunch on Apr 29, 2009 6:51 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Joe Stevenson doesn’t crack the Top 25, but Diego Sanchez, who’s only fight at LW has been against Stevenson, is somehow ranked #10…
Good going, MMA community.
by AnonymousA on Apr 29, 2009 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, he did beat Stevenson…
At least BE is objective about how they compile their rankings, but the’re still only as strong as the sources providing input.

A lot of that has to do with him being top 10 at welterweight prior to moving to 155.

I must say that the USAT/SBN Rankings are the greatest, and I’m only a little biased.

Am I blind?
the USA TODAY / SB Nation MMA Consensus Rankings present the top 25 fighters in MMA for the seven major weight classes.
I only see 5 weight classes (HW through LW)

good catch
USAT only carries the big five but we used to do Feather and Bantam too. We’ll correct that.

Are you not gonna do em at all or maybe separately?

I did them last month (they’re saved as drafts still, whoops, and were referenced in USAT). I did them this month and will post them later this week.
