John Hackleman on the Chuck Liddell Retirement Talk
He spoke to aroundtheoctagon about it:
It’s disappointing. He lost to a great champion and that’s no reason to retire. His record is no indicator to retire. He’ll retire when he’s lost the desire to fight or he’s getting hurt. He’s fought 100 times and only been knocked out twice. We’ll talk about it in the next week or so but no one is going to tell him when he’s going to stop fighting.
Everyone he’s lost to is a champion or a former champion,
Even the Jardine fight. It was a one point fight and some people think he won that one.
He also went on about Dana White not allowing Chuck to fight again:
I don’t care what his contract says, If it went to court you can’t stop someone from their livelihood. If he’s under contract with the UFC they have to give him a fight or if they don’t they have to let him go. They just can’t say you aren’t going to fight.
Dana can do what he wants because he has two multi-millionaires as his partners. It’s his ballgame. He can play it anyway he wants.
He thinks he’s looking out for him. It’s irritating. He spouts off sometimes and he has the big boys backing him with the money but he does care for Chuck. That’s his first concern.
Dana White has been saying that Chuck Liddell has fought his last fight ever on UFC 97, but there has been no official statement from Chuck Liddell's camp. If these words of John Hackleman were to be considered, we might have an idea of what they want to do next.

Besides the one blind judge who gave Chuck the third round, I’d like to know who else thought Chuck won. Go on, John. I’m waiting.

I AGREE
anybody with sense who saw that fight knows that Jardine won that fight. I dont know what’s up with Hackleman, he needs to see that chuck is over already.
Come on, what the fuck do
we expect a fighters camp to say when it goes to decision?
Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.
It's Chuck who's been getting hit in the head, right?
He’s fought 100 times and only been knocked out twice.
Flash KO’d by Rampage, KTFO by Evans, Flash KO’d by Shogun – that’s not two…
Everyone he’s lost to is a champion or a former champion,
Jardine? Champ?

Who thinks that other than Chuck?
He’ll retire when…he’s getting hurt.
He already is…hasn’t he seen Dana back-slap Chuck into the fence? And isn’t the point to stop him before it’s critical?

I’m assuming that he is talking about Shogun winning the Middleweight GP because Shogun has never actually held a belt. For that matter has Jeremy Horn ever been a champion?
yeah, i think they consider it as 2 KOs and 1 TKO.

doesn't matter
how can they not consider it? it was indeed a knockout. He went flat. May of been a “flash” knockout. But it is still a knockout. Sounds like denial to me.
I say they give Chuck 1 last fight, and let that birdy fly...
and if he wants to keep fighting, thats his call. But at this point, he’s not really worth the money they’re paying him.

He's not worth the money they're paying him?
Perhaps ability wise, but he is certainly worth it in terms of popularity and draw. And the UFC could never let him go without providing all the competition a huge boon. It would be stupid for them.

Chuck is still one of the biggest PPV draws in the company, the UFC will lose a lot of money with him not fighting and Dana White knows that. This isn’t about the money (hell Dana is already set to give Chuck Zuffa employment for life) it’s about Dana being worried about Chuck’s health to the point that it overshadows the money Chuck brings in.
Chuck is still a big paycheck for Hack. I think he sees his cash cow retiring and his kids still need braces.
Antonio Banuelos and Glover Texeira, I think.

Not sure Hackleman is thinking about Liddells livelihood here..
Chucks done, look at the Dana and “Chuck” Vlog. Chuck hardly speaks. Is he depressed or something? It sucks to see him like that.

Dude
Ya gotta stop writing all your posts in the subject line lol
Yeah I know that, but he wasn’t like that on his Vlog.

I just think that
Chuck is going thru what every athlete who is entering the retirement phase of their careers. I am certain he is not thrilled at the prospect of not fighting, & probably realizes that a lot of the people around saw his last fight & he is probably not happy about that. I was not exactly expecting backflips from Chuck & I think this shows how much this sport means to him.

Maybe you should rewatch that vlog.
Chuck has never been a loud talker, he is just speaking low & the camera is not picking it up very well. We are not talking about Muhammad Ali here who spent 20 years getting his head hit.

Well, I think Chuck could do quite well in some lesser promotions. He just doesn’t have the reaction time to be fighting top talent anymore, or at least not fighting them the way he wants to fight them. That’s no knock against him, its just him being 39.
If he went to Strikeforce and fought Frank Shamrock, he’d probably look like the ole time Iceman.
Get ready to get pounced on. lol
I agree though, he would look like the ole Iceman again.

As much love as I have for the Iceman (which is plentiful),
I have no interest in seeing him in the ring any longer, especially against lesser competition or another old guy. I prefer to hold on to the memories I have of him from a few years ago & with each loss I seem to lose those.

Would Chuck even want to fight low level competition? It would be like Brett Farve deciding that he wanted to go play arena league football instead of retiring, once you’ve reached the pinnacle of the sport what’s the point of going backwards? Chuck doesn’t need the money and what would him fighting lower level competition prove?
I love watching MMA fans parrot Dana White. From “Chuck’s done” to “BJ is surrounded by yes-men,” it seems anything Dana says becomes sudden gospel. I’m especially fond of the people in this thread suggesting John Hackleman doesn’t care about Liddell as anything more than a meal ticket. How incredibly classy and uninformed.
well if you read hacks comments it sure sounds like all he cares about is the payday. Dana white could make MILLIONS more off chuck liddell but he cares about him and doesnt want to see him get hurt.
Hack said its chucks livelihood, dana said hes giving him a job for life at zuffa, not hack. Hacks scared because his payday is about to run out.
THE PROBLEM WITH CHUCK
Chuck has never really been an “exciting” fighter to me. I hated the way he would force his opponents to come to him and than knock them out when the non strikers tried to go after him, and hey. If it works for him great! Problem is….it doesn’t work anymore! Chuck fights the same way he always does in every single fight. Wide loopy punches, tries to lure or corner you against the fence so he can wale on you. It’s the same thing over and over again. People finally got wind of it after like 8 years. (took them long enough). Also the fact that he never uses leg kicks, rarely throws high kicks or body kicks or any kicks for that matter, and rarely goes for takedowns make this man to predictable. Everyone knows that Chuck does not check kicks. So what have the guys that beat him done differently vs. the ones who lost? Look at every fight….LEG KICKS! Jardine ran a kicking clinic on Chuck to the point where in the third round Chuck didn’t want to get anywhere near Jardine because of the nasty welt on his rib cage and legs, and not to mention that he kept getting tagged with the leg kick, or body kick left hook combination. Watch the Shogun fight. What did he do? first thing he did was throw a nasty leg kick. Look at Chucks face wince with pain when he did it. When i saw that I knew it was over. Not to mention that chucks chin has started to weaken…And Sorry Rampage didn’t use kicks..he’s just a nasty puncher…raw power. Neither did Rashaad…so really the last two fights..so i stand corrected. But still my point remains the same…if Chuck indeed wants to continue fighting, he better incorporate all aspects of mma rather than, im gonna circle while you come to me on a b line and clock you a good one type of style

Agreed. I noticed the same thing. Right when I saw the sheer torque and power on that leg kick from Shogun, I knew Chuck was done in that fight without any hesitation. The only thing that could have gave Chuck hope in that fight is if Shogun’s knees were still unknown to him and he didn’t throw those kicks with the same torque and power that he had in the past. But once that first one landed and you saw Chuck quiver down the leg, I don’t know if anyone actually thought he’d win. Not to mention that when Shogun took him down, we all knew it was over.
