Report: Jeff Curran vs. Takeya Mizugaki Set to Take Place at WEC 42

Takeya-mizugaki1_mediumAccording to MMAWeekly, a showdown between bantamweights Jeff Curran and Takeya Mizugaki is set to take place at WEC 42:

Though bout agreements have yet to be signed, multiple sources confirmed to MMAWeekly.com that both Jeff Curran and Takeya Mizugaki have verbally agreed to face each other in a bantamweight showdown at WEC 42.

Each is coming off of a loss at WEC 40 in Chicago, but under vastly different circumstances.

Although this hasn't been signed on the dotted line, multiple sources indicating that the bout has been verbally agreed upon usually means an official announcement is coming. This should provide fans a solid co-headliner on the card that is also rumored to potentially feature Miguel Torres defending his title against Brian Bowles.

Mizugaki made his splash into the American MMA scene by taking Miguel Torres to an unbelievably fought decision back at WEC 40. With solid power, good technical boxing, and fantastic cardio, Curran will have some problems trying to stand with Mizugaki.

Curran's edge should be the floor, but will Mizugaki's overall striking advantage and sprawl be able to render Curran helpless? My gut tells me that Curran could present some huge problems for Mizugaki if this hits the floor, but Mizugaki's toughness and heart showed in the Torres fight. It should be a solid scrap.

I’m very excited about this scrap, but I agree with Schelfaut: I don’t want either guy to lose.

Curran getting some tough fights to welcome him to 135.

I think Mizugaki got this one, but I found it odd that MMA Weekly’s report basically infers that Curran will be dropped from the WEC and might retire from MMA if he loses this fight. Obviously it would suck to lose four straight, but when you’re losing to two amazing featherweights and two bantamweight stars, it’s hardly something to hang your head about. Dude is only 31.

Man, this is the same argument I had with Jens Pulver. Yeah, he’s getting older, but he dropped fights to some top competition at 145 in Faber twice. The Garcia fight could have went differently for him. I would like to see Pulver in one more matchup before I write him off as well.

That happened to me once too, and I’m certainly not a staff member.

Fantastic fight.

Curran’s hands looked lightning fast against Benavidez, and (obviously) his Jiu Jitsu is great. I don’t really think that his grappling has translated too well into MMA, but he might have to use it against Mizugaki.

Mizugaki also showed great hands, and he was throwing some very clean (but powerful) shots against Torres.

I honestly have no idea who to pick in this fight, but i’m leaning towards Jeff. I think that Mizugaki was kind of thrown to the wolves; he was nowhere near experienced enough to be fighting a guy like Miguel. In Curran, he’ll face another very stern test.

Neither Takeya or Jeff are being given an easy road.
